Sure would be nice to see that build up and re-contour....do you have any of those pics? Before and after are sure impressive....looking forward to seeing how you got there.

Thanks, unfortunately I didn't take any pics while machining. I didn't build up anything. I only removed material and replaced the void with oversize jaws.

Another Craftsman to add to the recent postings ... So, how do I fix this wart?

Dr. Blockhead: heat and a hammer, it will be straight in no time!! Put a torch to the problem area then a little bang bang. If you have or have access to a big ol' press that will work, too. But nice pick up, that style of CM is a brute and a real nice score.

Sorry for the rapid fire posts, fellas and ladies, worked on FOUR different vises today and two of 'em were my big boys. Sh#t is happening around here ;)

Did happen to see a Reed C3 that has one of the swivels completely cracked off. Would typically RUN RUN RUN from this type of thing, but the seller wants closer to $50 than $100 --- is this a getter??? I know nothing about brazing/welding or the cost for either. HELP!!!

In case you haven't read this already you might find it interesting.

Oh yeah . I know the history of the Tuffy. You find me the set pictured in the article and I'll give you the wilton... or 2.

Any way glad you found a couple and hope you like them as much as I do. They seem to fly under the radar of many collectors. But those that own them .... don't sell them until death. Happy hunting... maybe we'll cross paths some time. I'll be the old fat bald guy:)

Hey.
Not going to post a picture as most of you who frequent here will know what a wilton 101042 / 10143 bullet looks like. My neighbor picked one up for short money though, it is missing the swivel base and the end cap . I found some bases on Evilbay does anyone know for a fact they will work on the 101042/43 unit ? Has anyone found a place to get end caps ? I did check with wilton no dice .

As a repaired vise it would be a great worker for that price. If it has the pipe jaws even better. If it doesn't offer 40-50. The D jaw lead screw and nut may save another ... don't be scared save the iron

TJ: how did your Bay auction end on the green machine? i'd pick up that 3C for parts if nothing else if it's cheap enough.

i'm guessing you were into the Pabst with all those posts in a row??:bounce:

Cyph: those are parts #'s on the Wilton so i can't tell you what size bullet vise you have, but maybe somebody else can. i can tell you that you can take the dynamic jaw into the auto parts store and buy a freeze plug for the dust cover or measure it because those are only about $1. Etrailer.com has wheel bearing covers that a lot of members used because they are a little thicker and already rounded and not sure of the cost.

a lot of Wilton bullets were sold without the swivel base so you can mount it on the bench as is. if your friend needs 360 degree access i'd tell him or help him build a stand for it and use the rest of the money you'd pay Wilton to go out and have a nice dinner with a few drinks.

TM (Doc Block): very nice Columbian and your vise group is starting to grow. from what i see everyone is a quality vise and i know you have a few kids and lots of relatives so not worried if they are going to have a long stay in your shop.

HD: very nice restoration and i can tell by your post that you like this and it keeps you smiling so go for it. both quality vises and will make yours or any shop look better with one on its bench.

Lu: nice picture of a baby on the back of your C3. not sure why the post of the red one unless you are doing a before an after for us. whatever you and TJ bet on the green machine i don't think there will be a loser when a beer is involved unless you stay out too late and both get served papers from your wives. or bring them and talk about vises all night??

Craptain: when vises start coming home at 2 or 3 at a time you'll need therapy so post all your future ones here and we'll give you all the support you need. nice finds

I'd buy that reed in a heartbeat. Carve out any more damage with a die grinder and a carbide burr, make any pieces needed, and braze it all back together. Definitely be a good user after that!

you can never have too many tools

Thanks for the help and helping words of encouragement.

I do have a project or 2 lined up for retirement; oh wait ... I am retired!

I better get out in the garage. :lol_hitti

Drives: I stumbled across that red one on eBay, was meant as a joke. It looks as though his entire restoration process consisted of hosing it down with a couple cans of red spray paint. Was contrasting that to the skills of joe.striper (as well as the many other highly skilled restoration experts on this forum).

Doc Block: if you have a BFH and a piece of RR tie you can probably have that handle a bit straighter in no time and as Vintage suggested a little heat makes it easier. good luck and BEE CAREFUL because since there are hundreds of different vises (vices) there are a lot more possibilities than all those blocks that have been finding their way to your garage.

Retired just means more time to do honey do's and less money to do them or am i missing something.

Lu: it does look a little like Joe's blue Parker now that you mention it. :bounce:

Saturday picks. Not much of a vise. But the two I went for were badly broken so the guy gave it to me for my trip along with two old handsaws and a grease caked 1/2 Armstrong No. 50 ratchet. I cleaned it up already... nice. even better free. paid a total of 43.00 buck plus lunch for the wife.

From what I know the USS Missouri was refurbished in the 1980's and saw action in the Persian Gulf before being decommissioned and placed at Pearl Harbor so there is a chance that that is not original to its first commission in 1944 and a nice Wilton is floating around somewhere:thumbup:

A government refurb would have likely used a new vise, more likely that vise is original to the ship. For WWII I bet a lot of the vise manufacturers had government contracts.

Help! I need a quick I.D. on this vise? This is the only picture I have so your best guess is appreciated.

Balane, You cease to amaze me with your knowledge. I had to compare it to one in the pile.
It could be a 594, just a bit bigger ?

Well, Rock Island I'm certain of. 574 is my best educated guess just from looking at it combined with how common that model is. I'm not 100% certain it's a 574 but if I was forced to wager that's where my money would be placed.

594 is a fixed base vise so we know that can't be it.

Edit: It's entirely possible that it could be the Craftsman version of a Rock Island too. They look identical except for branding.

That was fast, thanks. $50 with the stand sound like a good price? That's what he wants for it.

I'd like to introduce my newly cleaned, brushed and waxed early Reed 403 1/2 vise. Check out the ordinance stamp on the slide. I also found an inventory mark on one of the jaws. Anyone want to guess on the year of manufacture?

Also picked up this gorgeous stump this weekend. Stainless bands and real clean construction.

Got started degreasing and derusting my Craftsman 51xx series vise and thought I'd share a few pics. I also wanted to show some of the numbers cast and stamped into it in case that might help identify more specifically the maker. Overall it seems to be in very good condition. I had hoped that enough original paint would survive to stick with the original finish but that's out the window.

Hey guys quick question. I came across two vises at an auction just now. A Broken and repaired Monarch (ugly) and a Craftsman. Both are under ~4.5". The Craftsman has the distinguishable teardrop shaped swivel lock lever, bullet shaped spindle end and what appears to be a stamped slide vs. cast. I thought to of seen a discussion of a larger similar looking Craftsman vise being the culmination of multiple vise manufactures. Is the Craftsman worth picking up? Any idea on age? Forgive me for lack of pictures.

Very nice Reed and banded stump Joe. Is that 1904?

Stamped steel slides won't command the attention or $$ of a full machinist's vise, but that is a decent vise if the price is right. But I wouldn't get carried away...

Picked this one up this morning for a few pounds.

Can't see a makers name at the moment.

Unusual shape for the UK.

Appears to be a nice casting

4" jaws that open 7"

Not original colour, believed to date from the 40s/50sImageUploadedByTapatalk1431888239.395391.jpg

Econ: that 5198 is going to look awesome when you are done. i'll put in my vote for a naked BLO finish, but your vise and your color is the rule.

Flav: Reed 204.5 which looks in pretty decent shape

Joe and Bagged: do you have stump envy or ?? your trophies sitting on yours both are getting closer to Balane's but i think he might have to teach you both about camera angles and lighting.

PMD: looks European maybe an old York or i'll defer to the English experts on our forum.

Nice job Joe! What is the deal with the chain on the stump? For moving it?

Whilst I've been mirror polishing my recent Record 36, my wife bought me a cheap Record 3 that needed tidying up. This has 4" wide jaws.

This was a trial to see what a red and black combination looked like :)
