Hi all, I have been reading the post for a while, enjoying every post and answer. Now I have a question. I want to use some knurled bolts (wheel lug studs) on a project, and need to know where to measure the bolt for the proper size drill bit. Does it make a difference if it will be pressed into steel or aluminum? Where is a good place to buy odd size drill bits? Thanks so much.

The hole will more than likely be the outside diameter of the threads, The knurled section is raised and larger than the thread diameter. Also you don't want to just drill a hole. You want to ream the hole to insure that it is perfectly round. A drilled hole is not precision and depending on the one drilling it, the material, and lubricant, you may very well end up with an out of round hole that the stud would prematurely wear out. Always ream the hole.
