Ok gents,

I retired from the Navy three months ago after 23 years and now have time for this.
I have the necessary required permits from CINCHOUSE for the improvements to the garage.

As it stands:
2 Car front loading attached to the house. Finished drywall, finished ceiling and unpainted floor. Approx size is 16foot wide by 22foot deep by 11 high.
Above the garage is a finished bonus room accessed from inside the living quarters. 3 foot of dead space on either side of the garage door footprint.

Would like to install shelves in the 3 foot of dead space on the one side of the Garage door and a workbench wall with cabinets below on the opposite side.:headscrat Possibly make the 5' of the last section on wheels for a swing out bar. Kinda tool storage on the front and locking liquor storage on the rear.

Also would like to install a storage meszzanine/loft above the dead space of the garage door. But I cant seem to find my load charts for stick construction. It would be light to medium loads and no live storage. Going into the ceiling tonite to investigate the joist situation there.

Got it sketched on paper, Cant figure out Sketchup though.

Any ideas on how to get over the span of the garage door? 2x10? doubled and scabbed but supported at the ends via Simpson connectors and then posted to 4X4 where the garage door runners are? Probably gonna need something in the middle huh? Can I grab that from (depending on what is in the ceiling, wood I beam no gusset plate truss larger than 2x4) the top?

Any body every hear of this before?

I plan on doing the work myself, after all I am a SeaBee......

Hey Mike, Welcome!

"CINCHOUSE" I love it!!!

A quick look at a load chart shows you could free span your 16' width with 2X10 at 16"OC using no. 2 grade or better southern pine. That would give you a 30psi live load.
Make sure you take pictures for us when get it started.

Mike,

Glad to have you aboard! Congratulations on your retirement! I have 2 more years to go depending on what my COMNAVFORWIFMIDWEST says...

Sound like you'll have a pretty cool setup when you get finished, I am still in the lurking & dreaming mode using this place to get ideas of what to do/not to do.

Hey John,
Sorry but that free span is actually gonna be 22 ft. The kid quoted the wrong measurement on the Phone.... Still going with 16 OC though.....
