90A breaker Square D

I have a square D QO main breaker box. I'm in the process of installing a 100A sub-panel in my detached garage but I don't know what to ask for as far as the name of the breaker that goes into the main panel. It will be a 90A breaker to supply 90 amps to the sub-panel.

Is it a dual pole, a double pole, or???
Does it have 1 switch or 2 switches that are tied together?

I think I need a Square D QO290 breaker but I need the you expert opinion.

Thanks

That will work if you have a QO panel. Square D also makes Homeline panels. The breakers do not interchange. And yes, you need a 220v double pole breaker. You can use two breakers tied together (or at least you used to be able to, some of the code guys will correct it).

When feeding a sub, what's the difference between the dual and single throw?

Those are both the same breaker, just different style, the QO just has a single handle but still a 2 pole breaker

Your supply houses must ****. That's a $60 breaker.

A QO2100 is about $45.

Haven't bought one lately but they wanted $100 for a 125a, and I paid $65 for an 80a, so it was a guess. 80 is a little oddball so maybe I paid a premium for it.

The supply houses don't always give sparkies price to everyone. I have been putting a 60 on these ever since I have started, great the wire is good for 90 and helps on long runs but never had a call about a trip and a couple of them were in small automotive type shops.
Found a couple 70 on a clearance at HD.

Or counterfeit... I've read about folks getting knockoff breakers instead of branded ones..

If the price is too good to be true then it is time to beware, the problem is more common with SQ D QO because they are high priced.

Well, just to end the debate on the price.....I'm not a sparkie so my price was $80.08 at the supply house.

Thanks everyone for your input and knowledge.

$80.08 Ouch!! I just looked at HomeDepot that QO290CP was $62.83, Menards was $70.30, Amazon was $57.21 and Prime if your a member. Just because there is a supply house doesn't mean you have to buy it there..

Is the QO290CP the right one to use? There are other 90A QO breakers.

I just ordered one from Amazon for $44 (Lowest price ever according to camelcamel).

Now, what wire for 50' to sub in attached garage?

Correct breaker. As a minimum I suggest aluminum 2-2-2-4 SER.

pattenp,

Thanks for your help, and all the help you give here on GJ!

Should that be run in conduit through exposed basement ceiling joists and on the surface of the garage brick wall? If so, what size?

Thank You,

Bill
