I'm surprised it's that light! I guess the 180 isn't nearly as overbuilt for its size as the 160 is. If I recall correctly from the kbc catalog, the morgan 160 has at least 30 pounds on the equivalent yost.

you can never have too many tools

2" wider and 60#'s heavier, they look identical, proportionally..:dunno:.

Beautiful dog, glad to hear he's ok, what happened?

Not to get graphic or hijack the thread, but he "tied" with my female shepherd. He is fixed, she is not. They were stuck together and she took off, resulting in a 5 stitch laceration on his man parts. Highly vascular area = a lot of bleeding. In my opinion it shouldn't have taken as long as it did to patch him up, I think the Emergency vet (not my normal one) knew how much I had to spend and wouldn't you know, my bill was just over that amount. Either way, he's ok. He's almost 7 and we've been through some tough times together, so i'm just happy for that.

I've never seen anyone on this thread complain about pictures of family, furry or not!

My three current vises: Smaller Wilton which spent its life in my Grandfather's barn until he passed away, a Columbian 604, and a Yost 204 1/2.

The Yost is for a workbench I'm fabricating and the client wants it left as-is dirt, grime, and paint runs included. That project will have a separate thread once finished.

The Wilton I lent to fellow Journal member fourmotioneer before his garage burned down: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289567
He was kind enough to pull the vise from the debris for me and it will soon be restored.

That leaves the Columbian 204 which is my first vise restoration, I stripped her to nuts and bolts, wire wheeled everything on the bench grinder and/or using a wire cup on the angle grinder, then taped up machined surfaces before primer and paint.

Questions: Anything I should have done differently? How do you feel about hand painting the cast lettering with a contrasting color (red)?:dunno:

JRobb: happy to hear your Malmutte (we call them Huskies probably because of University of Washington) is doing ok. Wow i bet he doesn't mess around with your shepherd again EVER even if he could or wanted to. here's to a speedy recovery.

also it's a start figuring out which ones to keep and since it's hard to stop looking altogether hunting for bigger game makes buying less often and more expensive so give it a try.

Brick: your vise and your color is sort of a GJ rule and if you are looking for color combos might i suggest you get in your favorite easy chair and click on this Youtube video somebody made of about the first 600 pages of this thread. if you want more ideas put those reading glasses on and read the next 900 pages for a few more ideas. BTW there are 3 more videos and this link is 1 of 4. just saying

also in case you haven't been told already you did a very nice job cleaning all those vises up and making them ready to use for another 50 years with new grease every 5 or 10 years depending on use.

ALL: anybody own a Columbian 408 or has one been posted VA because i could be persuaded to buy one if it really weighs 268 pounds?

Econ: best of luck with your 5198 restoration. in case you get in Oldie's neighborhood any chance you can bring it to show him so he can touch it until he finds one in his neighborhood?

Nice job ! great detail work. Did you have enough fun to do more?

Very nicely done. :)

Thanks guys.

Actually topop101, I had so much fun I picked up this bad boy on the way home from work. I was lucky to be the first caller on the CL ad. Guy said he had tons of calls after me, people offering him more money just to swoop in and pick it up before me.

Parker in good shape jaws, swivel, and all. $40.

I'm planning on making a special mount on my knaack rolling workbench at work and putting it into commission.

40... You ****!

And so it begins. This time next year you'll look around your shop and wonder how you ended up with 30+ vise's... :headscrat

Drive---Haven't seen a Columbian 408 or a Reed 408.---If we do, it'll probably be Demo that posts one first.---He's like a blood hound when he gets the sent of a big one.---If he can't dog one down, it worries me that they just don't exist.

Probably a little copying going on, the fact that the Columbian and Reed 408s are both Swivel jaws.---Oh and Dayids has the Columbian listed as 247 lbs., where as the Reed is listed in Reed ADs as 300 lbs.

The biggest I've seen is an 406 that I own along with an Athol 646x which is a rear swivel jaw as well. Both came from the same scrap yard:rocker:

Sneak peek of the morgan. Here's the swivel base after the first coat of paint.
uploadfromtaptalk1432303554276.jpg
I'll do a post in the repair 101 thread later on showing how I dealt with all the zip cut, grinder, hammer, and welding scars on the jaw towers. Lots of really heavy duty epoxy, filing, and die grinder work. Should look much better though!
My dad and I both agree that with all the other work its getting, a new set of jaws would probably be worth it. I'm also making two sets of soft jaws for both the morgan and the rock island. One set is hardwood for light work, the other set will be copper for heavy stuff.

I have played around with the idea of making a mold to cast lead vise jaws, although I'm not sure how practical it would be with how fast they would get destroyed. Probably not going to do it. Although I think I figured out how to even cast in the countersunk screw holes, making them ready to use out of the mold.

It's not too hard to stiffen up lead. Just add som zinc or antimony and that will make it much harder then pure. Tire weights are a good example of "hard" lead.

If you need some lead, I've got a few pounds laying around

I think you mean tin rather than zinc. Zinc makes the lead like oatmeal. Thats the reason bullet casters hate zinc wheel weights.
And I have a reasonable bit of lead around. I cast lead hammers quite a bit. Most of my lead is probably about a 50-50 mix of wheel weights and pure lead flashing.
I would probably use something like linotype or babbitt if I was going to try the vise jaws.
I actually made a thread on lead hammer casting a while back if you're interested. I have finally figured out a really good way to make reusable molds that is cheap and easy.

Where in the world do you get lead like that?

Some guys garage. That not all of it but the amount was in the 600-700 lb range. I also get plenty of lead from work. Lots of the pipeline valves we remove/replace have cast lead counterweights the size of bowling balls.

I've probably got enough lead to cast my self a new full size Chevy Silverado if I had the mold for it. :scared:

$75.00 for a nice 272.---That blows Joe.:monkey_po---Nice catch.---I don't have any minions.

Vintage,---just keep recycling the lead jaws.---When they get buggered up, just melt'um down, pour them in the mold, and slap them back on the vise.---Be careful about breathing lead fumes though.---They make a man mean like feeding dynamite to a dog.

Big,---How much does your 646X weigh.---If memory serves, I'm thinking they are a little better than 200 lbs.---That's an impressive swivel jaw.

I never got a chance to put it on a scale, even though it was sitting next to one at the time. I just wanted to pay for it and get back to work.

You are in the neighborhood though. I would say over 200 but under 215.

Finally had a little time to work on the wilton.
20150521_151345.jpg

I forgot to take pictures of it after metal prep was done before painting.

Very nice. I remember you making the drive over to Mannford to get that. Looking forward to seeing it reassembled.

Far easier to get a little sheet lead, then cut and form.

I used a light set for well over ten years before I gave up on them and made a new set from heavier material. That set is still in use. I'll try to remember to shoot some pics this weekend, if not after i get home... (daughter is coming home from Col for the weekend)

Got the pic:

This cap is about 2X thicker than my first set:

Talked to the seller of this vise, he says the jaws are 6" but doesn't know the model number. Comes with a "wheel stand" and still swivels. What would you pay for it?

Anyone in the Tampa bay area looking for a 6 1/2" Yost?

http://www.baaslive.com/item.aspx?i=22402347

Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk

That is a decent vise. I thought this was a "made in China" but on the Yost website it is in the Made in the USA section and they list it for $457. This model the dynamic can be inversed so the anvil is in the opening between the 2 jaws, making for 11" opening.

http://www.yostvises.com/made-in-us...-reversible-combination-vise-swivel-base.html

Starting bid of $10 could end up being a good deal for someone.

Lu: that seller has had that vise for sale for maybe 6 months to a year and it was at $500. he just dropped to $250 so not sure how long he'll stick at that price. i'm guessing it's a Reed 206 and it's tack welded to that old fork lift tire. it's a good looking vise from what i can see and that one handle ball looks like it was buried in the dirt as much pitting as it has because it looks like a golf ball.

what do you think it's worth? is it close to you?

Fireman: nice looking 6 inch Wiilton Bullet. while i like that color you picked i really liked the brown color you painted the block grinder you own. how about the block sitting next to this Wilton when you finish the vise? also since it doesn't have a swivel are you going to mount it to a bench or build a nice stand for it to have 360 degree access?

BC: are you actually able to email while you are on the plane? how expensive is that? very cool and did you see the vises heading towards Joe's home as you flew over from the huge magnet he owns?

That would have been a 206 for years, but with the oval Reed logo cast in, I think this is when they went to the N & S designations, so this should be a 106S.

It's a 6" and a Reed, if there are no cracks or welds, $100 is a steal just about any part of the country. $150 would be a great deal and depending on how badly you want it and where you live, $200 plus is still good.

I am sure on eBay people ask $400 to $600.

EDIT, just saw Drives response. I think it is a 106S, but not a sure thing. If he is asking $250, that would be about as high as I would go.

Drives: It's quite a drive for me. Yeah, I also saw the welds and the lack of a swivel screw. Didn't know he's had it on their that long. Mostly I was curious what the value was, I've only seen that oval logo a couple of times.
