Spent most of the weekend trying to sort through some of my "stuff"...Well here I am 3 days later and I've got to admit I can't keep accumulating things.

I've mentioned I found and joined this forum while researching the Parker vise I bought mainly as a favor to a guy who really had no way to even move it. And so it began. The fact that I can't remember the last time I even needed a vise wasn't going to deter me. Without trying very hard, I've managed to amass a small collection. :wtf:

As much as I like them...I've got too much other **** I collect and don't use, that I don't need to be tripping over these. And wouldn't it be a novel idea for someone to have them that would actually USE them. Even still, as I imagine some of you can understand, it's not going to be easy to part with them, especially the York. Wish me luck.

For old time sake I gathered them for a group photo. I'm sure there are a few other that are hiding out somewhere.

Problem is, if you get rid of those, you'll only go and buy something else to fill that empty space. Vicious circle. :D I'd definitely keep hold of that York, if I were you.

CT: so i can see you selling or giving as gifts the 3 small vises and maybe a Parker so you'd only have 3 vises. the Parker with the wrench, the York and my favorite of all of your vises the Athol 624.5.

good luck. maybe take a few pictures of how many hammers and wrenches of the same size you have if you have more than a couple?

Have to yell, in your best Clint Eastwood voice, "get off my lawn!". I'm the next state over, can run down and get those pesky varmints out of your way. What's the big one with the smaller red one sitting on its slide?

Although I completely understand finding, repairing and restoring vises, if I live to be 100 I will not understand having dozens of them lined up on shelves. Tools are meant to be used.

I'm in the same boat, with a couple, well a few more than that.

There is a smaller Parker that keeps on showing up on the local CL, and I keep wanting it and yet never going to get it. I just don't need it.

I should really cut down my horde by half.

Yet I find myself wanting to know what you are going to do with that Parker....

That big swivel base Athol is making those vise voices in my head start up again.
I know I don't need it, hell I already have two big old vises relegated to floor storage under benches.

But those danged voices keep saying, "That sure would look sweet on your bench somewhere . . ."

I have to go chase the voices away now.

While a commend you for giving up the vice, as most who have posted struggle with, I would definitely be keeping at least one. That parker looks to be in pretty darn nice shape and even if seldomly used, its still used and needed. Of course 7 are not but one or two are. I made a top 5 list of my vises, every other one be up for consideration as to its fate.

That would an Athol 624 1/2. If I really get desperate, I may bring them to to you..

lol..Based on your post and a few others, it appears I am not alone with this fixation. I watched the Athol on CL for about 4 days hoping someone would take the temptation away. On day 5...I succumbed.

See above...:D

FWIW...The smaller large vise is a Simplex Gray 41P. It could possibly be the oldest of the group. I consider it the sleeper of the bunch. It's quite a hefty piece.

Doubt that Simplex is the oldest. They ( Simplex Tool Co ) started making them in the early 20's. At that time they had a round hub. Yours with its cylindrical hub is a bit newer .
Anyway, it is cool! and not as common as the Parker or Athol.

It's funny. I was in my garage doing the same thing this weekend: figuring what I need, what I want, and what to get rid of. My garage is small with my project truck in it. When I got to the area where I keep my vises (about 20 or so at this point-thanks to the GJ vise thread), I couldn't bring myself to look through them and choose which to keep. I got heart palpitations!! I know most have to go....I'm just not ready yet! I have a problem...

Start by dumping the exposed screws, then either the parker or athol.

Looks like one of my shelves. I have them buggers all over in my garage. 65 at last count. But if I see one I like for a good price I will get it. Since I do not smoke or drink I need some sort of vise.. lol

if you get rid of them you will regret it.

Agreed. They take up too much space and unless I can use something I don't get much out of stepping around stuff for 30 years.

Funny thing I am in the same boat I use one or two all the time 24/7; compared to your big monsters mine are very small so at least I am not tripping over them on the floor.

I'm also in the same situation. So I just evaluated what vises that were needed and slowly sold off the rest. Its good to have one vise of each type and a couple of regular bench top vises. The only ones that are getting tripped over are the very unique ones, which likely will go to my kids.

However, I'll never be cured of the vise fever. :bounce:
