Well not technically an addition to the shop part, but I needed some kiddy gates. The installation locations required a custom setup. So I have been making them and painting them as weather permits....

Well they are almost pool gates :) In fact I used pool gate latches and self closing hinges. I also got tired of capping tubbing ends so I ordered a variety of caps to try out the plastic ones are the most $$ and the cast iron didn't look good on this application but would on others ( BTW they were the cheapest ). The rest of the gates are made of 16 gauge 1" square tubbing. I started with 1/2" 16 gauge round tube for the "baluster" fillers, but they were a little too flexible in the length I wanted, due to the height of the gates. So I went with 1/2" cold rolled solid rod.

gate004.jpg

gate003.jpg

That made the gates a little more heavy, but the hinges are rated for that. The Latch things are cool they are a magnetic latching mechanism that is really clever. When the magnet in the base gets next to the latch pin it snaps it down and locks the gate. So with the self closing hinges and these latches you just open them and you don't have to mess with them closing ( nice feature as 2 of the gates are going on the stairs (top and bottom))

So I guess I should have said what was making that nice sound:) It was the big compressor:( The Quincy 390, it would make a rather loud slapping sound on start up ( noticed it more when I soft started it with the new VFD) until it got about 5 psi in the tank. Then it would quite down nicely. When I started playing with the unloader, it would also make that nice sound when it unloaded, and stop as soon as it had pressure again.

So the Great deal on the compressor ($600) was not as good as it first appeared. So I ordered up and new high pressure piston kit from Quincy for $243 ( it was interesting that the whole deal {pin and rings} was cheaper than the bare piston by $5.00) the rod bushing $53.00 (outch) and an after market "Tune Up" kit (rings, bearings, gaskets, and the parts to rebuild the valves) $178.00 for the pump. I had to take the jugs to a machine shop to have them lightly hone them, you could still see the hone marks in them, but probably not enough tooth so the new rings would seat in nice. I don't have any way to hone the low pressure bore at 7.5" and I had them press in the new rod bushing and hone it to fit. I don't know how much they are charging but I bet it's about $50 more... The pump should be good for 50 years more now. oops I allmost forgot the 2.5 gallons of oil I need to get....

Man, that's a nice shop. You'll need a K-9 unit to find each other in that shop.
Mike

Thanks I will get another K9 unit some day, but I have the kid units that are taking all my time now, and I don't have the extra to train another dog at this point....

W- you do have "too much stuff"!!! Nice work - let's see more!

Yep I need to unload some of the extra stuff might have to try selling stuff on e-bay instead of buying it

So I got the parts back from the machine shop and I was off on my estimate of the cost by $2.00 . So now I'm going to set up an electrolytic rust removal tank and place a few of the valve parts in it to remove some of the rust that formed on them from the condensation.

DAMN! That is a LOT OF STUFF THERE!
We currently have a Pack-Rat (16-footer) packed with our stuff from our old house we sold. I will be getting my 10by20 shed built this month and then install my shelving inside. Once done, the Pack-Rat will be delivered and puked into the shed.

Damn, that is a lot of stuff you have!
I bet you can't wait till it all gets organized.

Yep I need a few weeks of time to get stuff arranged and then unload the 40' Kentucky moving van outside.

So here is the electrolytic rust removal in action. If you have not tried this you should it's GREAT and cost next to nothing to set up! Most people have a battery charger and a bucket to work in. Some scrap metal ( rebar in this case) and some washing soda (sodium carbonate)

Here the head is cooking off some rust that was in the high pressure port.

Here we have the jugs and rods reinstalled

Well it's alive again!! I finished rebuilding the six valves ( honed them on some 1000 grit emery paper until they shone in the light)

quincy390-017.jpg

Then I torqued down the head and installed all the valves, unloaders and plumbing.

quincy390-021.jpg

I painted some of the bare components and I will paint the whole machine. I'm waiting on a price from Quincy for a new decal set for the machine. IF it's not too $$$ I will get it and it will look like a new machine, if not it will not have the don't stick your head in the belts warning stickers....

quincy390-019.jpg

So now it runs like a champ and is nice and quite I'm running it at 2/3 speed and the whine from the motor ( VFD whine) is louder than the compressor... I'm now thinking about selling my 5 hp compressor and just have this one run as the main machine. Before when it was loud as hell I was going to have the 5hp do most of the light work and only run the bigger machine when I wanted to bead blast or sandblast....

Wow William, it's great to see that you are still keeping this thread going. It's been over a year since I last visited and since then I have built my 50x100 based on A LOT of what you did. Unlike you I didn't document all the steps and thats what makes your dedication to snaping pics so valuable. Good to see that you still haven't orginize your shop either, now I don't feel so lazy.
Keep up the good work.

William,
Congrats on the Shop.
Thanks for taking the time to share the shop, info and photos and a part of your life.
Congrats on the munchkins.
As for cost your numbers are very favorable compared to the cost per square foot for any new house built by anyone for you.
You have been doing an excellent job. Even making a few mistakes along the way and humble enough to share them.

Thanks
Dudley

Did you post your build here on the GJB? I will have to search it out....
Some day I will have to get more organized.... Oh hell it will never happen I guess I'm doomed to be a slob.

Very nice shop!

Any updates?

Thanks yes I have to get busy I have some stuff to post... Some more construction pictures, a few new project, and toys to add to the thread... I will try to get some more stuff posted soon...

How are the new helpers working out? Nice shop!

Well I'm not sure about the helpers part... maybe in a few more years right now they eat about all my time...

Thanks for the kind thoughts, I'm still making plenty of mistakes! In fact I just made another in my latest project.... oh well nothing that a cutting torch and grinder can't fix up! :(

I really like the compressor rebuild. Well done.

I have to drag it out side and paint it, as the weather is getting warmer here, and some day as soon as we get a nice sunny day (before the bugs return). I did get most of the warning stickers from Quincy for it, but they wanted $64 for the large sized Quincy logo (with the orbiting electron look), so I'm going to do with out it.

Very nice build. I think this is probably my 3rd or 4th time reading it since you began. I will definitely be using some of your ideas when I start my 40X100 (w/ 40X30 living quarters) later on this year. Do you have any living quarters pictures to share?

Thanks,
Chris

I will look and see what I have picture wise and try to post up some more. 40X30 should give you quite a bit of room...

So I have a few projects that are nearing completion! So I thought I would post some more pics of them starting with the Smurf blue compressor. Note to all that might care; the Rust-Oleum ford blue equipment enamel is not the same color in the spray can as it is in the quarts! However I think the quarts might be a closer match to Quincy's newer colors.

I missed all of this compressor stuff. Here I thought it was a running unit way back when...and all for $600??!? Wow...lucky.

I could never run something that big though, but it sure does look awesome.

I too thought that it was a running machine when I got it! I knew that they had tipped it over, and damaged the magnetic starter and the control plumbing, additionally they mashed up the belt guard. But I ran the machine when I picked it up and although it was loud at start up after a few seconds it had pressure and that removed tons of the rod slap. Also I had no idea how loud the thing should be as I had never heard one run. So anyway I made a new belt guard for it that took a while and I never ran the machine with the unloaders operating. Then I got the idea to use the Big VFD on it and when you started it with a slow ramp up time you could clearly hear the rod knock and I also started playing with the unloaded operation mode as sooon as it unloaded the rod slap was BAD.....

So the total deal was not a steal, but it's still not too bad... Of course if my time was even worth 50 cents per hour this like all of my projects would be under water... :(

I needed a larger solvent parts washer so when I found this Graymills Clean-o-matic machine for $650 new in the box I jumped on it. They seem to be a nice machine, but I think I will put some weather striping under the lid to help prevent solvent evaporation. It's rather dear for the graymills stuff at $85 per 5 gal:shocking::shocking:

The OTC load leveler was another great deal I couldn't pass up and will work great on my gantry crane.

The last little project was a rewire of my Harrison AA 330 VS lathe's power and control systems. Well at least is was supposed to be.... When I received the machine the PO had trashed out the nice factory system that He couldn't figure out, and replaced it with a drum switch. So I carefully measured the opening ( at least 3 times) on the lathes base, and made the panel with a nice new AB reversing contactor, control transformer and the power distribution block, while leaving space on the right for mounting the digital control for the spindle speed display and fuse block. Anyway I went to install it and DAM the contactors are too tall it fits in the opening just fine, but the door will not shut!!! :headscrat:headscrat:headscrat

Oh well some times you win and others.....

William....

Nice.

Dang, did you buy that load leveler on eBay?? I was eyeing one up, but it was still too pricey. You think you can use one of those on a engine crane? As much as the china load leveler helps removing an engine, it still would be nice to have one that was a little smoother.

Well yes I did get it off e-bay for $160.00 They are like $575-$750 on the net new, and this one was new in the box. Using them on a small engine hoist wouldn't work well unless you shortened the chain ( and I don't recommend that) You really want the smaller model (2K lbs. otc 1805) for "Small" engine work:)

WC, I think i might have missed it but what are the cfm's and input power of this compressor?

Neal, at the max output the compressor puts put 79 cfm and at 480V it pulls 28 FLA, it spikes without the VFD on start up to 135A for about a second. I'm going to run it on a 60 amp circuit as that's what the VFD manufacture recommends ( its rated @ 30-40hp) I like the way the machine runs at 2/3 speed ( about 1250 RPM) and I will normally run it at that speed. From now running several Baldor motors on VFD's I have noticed they are really noisy, the drive whine is louder than the compressor running when it's unloaded. I don't know if it's going to bother me enough to change it out but just some thing I have seen...

Awesome shop.

Is that a Water Buffalo I see? They scare me. :shocking:

It's a RE5 Do you need one?? It was a "Project" I used to ride it all the time but, I have let it go and soon it must go down the road, as I just have too many projects to even think about it now. BTW I have all the factory tools for it and they are worth more than the bike!

What a massive shop! Totally jealous - great job!

Don't be, right now it's a MASSIVE mess and will take me weeks to clean :( You know your in trouble when you loose stuff and can't find it for years. I still don't know where I put my first rotary hammer.... I think the building just ate it!

Same here Eric, this is simply amazing. I can only dream of something on this scale, I'd be quite happy just having a garage of my own :p

Thanks for the epic thread William, hope everything's going well, looking forward to your next updates.
