I can get you the brand & paint number tonight after work, it's actually a green automotive paint.
I was lucky to find this one, it could have been original paint but I hated the color. My handle has a few scars in it , but nothing to make me want to replace it. My jaws and all hardware were quite nice.

Very excited and a little sc'rd. Here's the raw AC Aluminum for the jaws for the Snappy-Wilton. Used the CNC router to "plane" the section for the 2 jaws down to the proper depth, now I'll just add the hatch pattern and cut'em out. First try at this so we'll see how she goes! I'll post them up later finished.......if all goes well

I decided to do some work on the 2 with the BLO while the 5198 paint is drying. It's close to being done, mostly making adjustments.
I have all the vises I need, but still would like to have a Meadville Yost and a Reed because they're from Pa.
I collect things but really never let things go, I have 2 boys that hopefully can use my overflow someday.

Insp: my color might need to be reset on my laptop because some of the red painted vises turn out orange and your vise looks blue to me. anyway if you get time please post the color and brand of paint and even a picture of the paint can for us to see because your Wilton looks great.
Cool: not too many of us have tile floors with Persian rugs on their shop floors, but i think i like your chair almost as much as your 4C.
Econ: passing down tools to our kids with a little knowledge on how to use them is a great idea. i had my boys running chainsaws when they were 12 and we only had one minor trip to emergency room over the years for a chainsaw injury which was my fault.

You're making SERRATED aluminum jaws? I've never seen that---only smooth soft jaws. It will be interesting to see how they hold up.

I am not sure that aluminum is a good choice for serrated jaws unless you are grabbing leather of stuff like that. Any kind of metal or plastic will destroy your serrations. This is how I cut my serrations on small jaws like the Baby Wiltons. pretty easy set up if you have a Bridgeport. The cutter is a double angle cutter found on e-bay.

I'm going to look at a rock island 594 but I don't know much about them and I can't find much info on them. All I know is that it has 4.5" jaws. Anyone have any more info on these?

Bagged im assuming youre talking about the guy in middletown. Asking $165. He also has a 4 1/2 starrett. Ive asked him for pictures several times and all he responds with is a phone #. I have several rock islands and they are top notch vises. In fact my main vise is a rock island 577. I never followed through with this guy because i cant get any pictures or answers from him. $165 is high if your if youre looking to flip it.

Yes It's on my way home and I bought a grinder off the guy. I'll see what he really has. Yea I'm not paying over $100. I think he emailed me saying $135 but I don't want to pay that much either. I'll take pictures of what he's selling. The guy seems to be somewhat computer illiterate.

Bagged: i agree with Meatsis that Rock Island vises are up near the top of the list of good old quality US made vises. if you didn't own a vise that 4.5 incher might be the only vise you'd ever need in your shop if it's in great shape. Price is yours to decide how much you want to pay.

I'm very happy with the rock island I have. I'll get a picture of its new home on my knifemaking bench tonight. I figured the morgan could use something to keep it company!

So my new addition to the vise family. Got the guy down to $95. I was walking away from it and he decided to take my final offer.
It's a solid vise.

The jaws are in really nice shape and the slide is nice and tight and smooth.
I also got a new collar for my Parker 22x in the mail today. I was searching on eBay for just a collar and found this one that came with a lead screw, shims, and nut as well. It was cheap enough and worth it. It's off a Parker 104. The lead screw is slightly longer than the original but the handle and nose are the same. I guess I don't have to worry about fixing the original for now.
I need to work the fit a little but now I can finish this vise.
It sure beats the original.

That guy in Middletown is an idjit! I've called him several times. I got pics of that Rock Island a year ago...there is a reason he hasn't sold it. As I recall perhaps a broken and repaired dynamic jaw...

If anyone cares, here's a video of the crosshatches being cut on the jaws. Nothing like KMscott's setup, but it'll work. I'm only going about .06 deep so I think it'll be pretty strong, but time will tell.

For those of you who are looking for a solution for a paint drying oven I just came across this item from Cabelas. This is a separate heating element that only heats to 220 degrees. It is designed for a home-made smoker. It is 110 volts. All you need is a metal box with shelves and you are done. I am looking for a broken oven for the express purpose of installing one of these.

Yes. Technically, not supposed to cut anything harder than "soft aluminum." This stuff is aircraft grade and very heavy/dense. So I programmed it to do that to keep the heat down. Seems to be working and the jaws (not done cutting yet) seem very sharp. Probably a little smaller hatches than I wanted but oh well, I can cut another!

Dagny: that little vise looks like it's meant to do most any job and at most any time. since it probably has in the past how about putting some fresh grease on it or some oil to keep it working for another few years because it looks like the Sahara inside that vise. also welcome to the forum and do you have any big old iron in the barn to post a few pictures of?

No damage on this one that I can find. I took it apart.
This is the one he wouldn't sell me last week because he was selling it with a workbench. He is pretty flaky. I got a craftsman block grinder off him last week which I made money on after taking off the parts I needed. The guys lives right near me so I don't have a problem taking a look at what he's selling if I can get a deal.

Here's what I used....nice spray pattern and good coverage. I set it out in the sun for a few hours to bake and harden up. No where near original, but better than guacamole green.

Well I'm new to the GJ and when introducing myself I had some vise questions . and was aked to post a few pics of a couple of Vises I have . Attached are a 205 1/2 Reed I recently picked up at a auction and a 433 1/2 Charles Parker that a relative gave me. It's in really good condition and just needed a teardown and cleanup and paint. The Reed needs one of the locking lugs repaired someone did a cobble job on it . It's a beast . Now to build a solid stand for it and still be able to move it around in my shop

DZ: nice looking pair of vises for your first post on this vise thread. so i think you mentioned the Reed 205.5 has 5.5 inch jaws and weighs 120 pounds. so how much does the Parker and anvil weigh and who is the maker of the anvil?
if you have any questions just ask or thanks for sharing and BEE CAREFUL because one a member posts a vise or two like you on this thread other vises tend to follow you home so make some room.
Shift: that actually looks like a C2 without a swivel base and would be worth shipping if it's not cracked or welded. Big Caddie i think is still out of the country or i think he was looking for a combo vise for his shop.
BC: call home and have your Minions pick up that Wilton for you like Joe does on his side of the US. hope you are still doing ok on your trip.

Almost 100% positive that is a C1, just compared it to mine. No matter which one, any of the C series is a STEAL at that price, even without the base. Great find Shiftless! Wonder who is going to luck out??

TJ: I've owned a few C1's and one C2 and that looks like a C2 just saying because the width of a stance is about 18-24 inches.
Shift: it is good to have and be a minion in return. i prefer to call them friends instead of minions though.
