TJ: no hat eating on discussions involving a vise picture. Demo might come up with a picture or the 700 pounder and then you might need to choose a hat.

Shift: maybe but that's an awfully long bolt.

All: i'm passing on this big 6 inch American Scale swivel jaw vise that might be a #79 for $250 only because it's needing parts i can't make myself. also because i already own a few big vises. it looks like it needs a new handle and probably has some issues with the jaws. also no mention of the swivel jaw in the ad so it might be a challenge to get it loose. it's a decent vise and my guess is that it weighs close to 200 pounds.

Wow, the LA Wilton seller looks like a really great guy!!

uploadfromtaptalk1432876424155.jpg

Might be a little small/poor quality, I asked the seller whether it was a C1 or C2 and how to identify and his exact reply was "don't know, don't care"

TJ: the 8 incher looks like it has a damaged dynamic and for some reason that style doesn't do much for me.

I would bet that vise is 100 pounds and if it was hot out like it was up here today he probably doesn't want to touch that vise again. hopefully it's not cracked or welded and somebody gets a decent buy.

Oldie: that's how the guys talk when they live next to the sports stadiums in Seattle. :lol_hitti our star running back on the super bowl team barely says a word to the media, but he can run with a football.

Went and did some trading yesterday. I picked up this nice little Parker swivel and two nearly new Irwin vintage screwdrivers (my favorite screwdrivers!) for four tomato plants and the use of my Troy-Bilt so he could rototill his garden. Now that's what you call "bartering"!

VA: i'm still thinking about that AS #79 and trying to talk myself out of it because it will need a new handle and some jaw work and i don't own a lathe (yet). another reason is he tried to sell it over a year ago for $500 and at the time i think i offered him $250 and he said no way. if it looked like one of these i'd probably pay more for it because i do like that vise. i'm also liking the idea of finding vises that weigh less than 10 pounds that sell or $500.

JB: yes i'd say that is a great way to start the day. i sold my smallish 5 HP Honda powered rototiller last year thinking i'd see another big Toro come up before spring and I've yet to find one. My honda mechanic has one and i know he needs a good vise so maybe i'll see if he can come over with it for a little horse trading. i love those screwdrivers too and how old would you say they are?

ALL: anybody in LA grab that $50 C series vise? or any news on which Craftsman 519x vise that was in St. Louis??

Nice score! Vise and the screwdrivers.
Those classic wooden handled Irwins look to be either NOS or used solely in a cabinet shop. My old ones came to me almost black with oily dirt. Do you know the approximate years those were produced?

Drives~ I'm thinking 1950's (possibly earlier) on the screwdrivers. Seems like I was told once they came out as a tool kit for WWII Jeeps sometime ago too. Not sure but, I know they're great tools.

Shiftless~ Bingo...Cabinet Maker! He also showed me a really interesting brace & Bit with a 45 degree gear box that is used to drill the back corners of a cabinet. A really neat piece of ingenuity. I have never seen one quite like that although I've used many "standard" brace & bits before.

I have all the vises I need,

[...]

I collect things but really never let things go, I have 2 boys that hopefully can use my overflow someday.

Sounds pretty much like me too. :D I've even reached the point where I'm considering calling it a day on the vice collecting, (also partially related to the fact that I'm considering buying another piece of kit for the workshop, which will totally consume any remaining free space when it gets here), bar the occasional special ones.

I don't think that they're that old. I bought two 4pc sets of those in the 1990's (made in china). I think they're still sold today through wood working shops. I remember seeing them at WoodWorker's Warehouse (now gone) and other wood crafter's stores.

They were cheap (inexpensive) and strong, which makes them great striking screwdrivers.

My dad has one of those angle brace and bits. My understanding is that they were an electricians tool for drilling between studs up against a wall. I'll grab a picture later.
And nice screwdrivers! I have a thing for the old wood handled mac screwdrivers. Especially if they are stamped sabina ohio. Got a bunch of flat heads, and a few Philips. One even has the patent number for the Philips head stamped on it! Easily my favorite screwdrivers

you can never have too many tools

I found this online in regards to the Irwin screwdrivers.

"Irwin continued to manufacture this particular type of screwdriver and market as the "Irwin Perfect Grip" Screwdriver thru the late 80's when they merged with, or were bought out by another tool manufacturer (American Tool Co). The type that was most common to the military was the 6" with round shank, and the 5" with the square shank. The 6" (11" OAL) was found in most Army vehicle Mechanics Tool Kits, the Square Shank 5" version was issued to Armored Vehicle Mechanics and also included in the on vehicle tool sets for armored vehicles.

I hear you Drive.---They take up 1/10 the space, but bring the same money.---Unless you go into the mega monster bracket.

Why can't I EVER find a vintage bench vise that people don't want $300+ for. I'm almost to the point of just buying the Craftsman Professional vise and calling it a day. These things just don't pop up around me at all.

Someone's got a chip for sure. Cute that he's got his C1 bolted down 3 feet from the washing machine.

Wow, the Los Angeles sellers continue to impress:

No "garage journal" weirdos need apply. This is a MAN'S VISE. You won't be putting nail polish on this one, shining it up, or making it pose for your gay pictures to show your internet friends.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/tls/5048537289.html

And yet, he's still asking a Garage Journal price for it. I wonder where he got the value from. Hmmmmmm ?

Someone needs to buy it from him and tart it up in sparkled pink with a tu-tu. Then spam his email box with pictures of it traveling all across the country with his name on it.

JB: i do like those screwdrivers and whether they were made in the 50's or a newer model they look great and probably still work ok. so let's see what JB is up to with his Parker instead of talking about the guys in LA that don't know how to use or sell a vise. any progress yet on the Parker??

Fretters: i'm still thinking about what you said earlier about giving up your vice for vices hobby to buy bigger tools. i remember when i said something like that and you said it won't happen. I did end up buying something bigger, but only to carry home some bigger vises and machines.

i think your shed is just too damn small and it's time to make another one in the backyard so you can have a little more room. if I was closer i'd bring my tools and lend a hand.

BTW anything soaking in the vat currently like maybe an old vise?
