So jealous today, feeling.... inadequate.

So the wife and I take a daily walk to walk my puppy and just sort of catch up for the day. We walked past a house in my neighborhood and I saw a massive shop behind it. Chatted the guy up very briefly. His shop is 3600 sq ft!!!

I feel so lost right now. I spent the rest of my night trying to picture all the things I could do with that much room. I can only look outside and feel my shop lacks.

Will I ever recover from "shop envy"?

No plans to build a new one. I don't really have room. I like my current yard and lay out, and the rest of my property is wooded and a nature preserve so I can't make more room.

No thanks, I grew up working in big shops, barns, and industrial buildings and you fellas can keep them. I prefer something that is easily and affordably heated, cooled, and humidity controlled to prevent iron from rusting. My 2-car is a bit small, but I'm thinking a 4-car is about right for me.

I've been wrenching on the street for 8 years now. I rebuild a motor, and even did an engine swap right on the sidewalk. So while it can be better, it can get worst lol.

People in my neighborhood keep to themselves. It's why they moved here. Secluded plots, 3+ acres with wooded all around it

I don't have a project. It's odd. Most of my current stuff is in my house and doesn't involve my shop.

What would you do in that you can't do in yours?

I know the feeling. I remember a while back telling my bud about my new place and the three car garage that it came with. He then tells me about how he bought the ONE ACRE corner lot (for 5K -lives out in the country) so he can build a new shop. Faqr! He's a great guy though, and deserves anything he gets. He's the type of guy that you can call at 2am to bring tools and a trailer and he'll just ask you for directions.

Just remember, the bigger it is, the more you have to keep clean and organized...or not.
Just ask a few of the packrats on the forum!
I'd love to build my own cabinets, fabricate stuff I want, but sometimes the cost of making it is more expensive if you just go out and get one.
Now... making it a business and working at home, is a whole different story!

That being said, the more space you have, the more stuff you keep. 5 years ago, I went from a 24x40 garage, to a 3 car garage and a 30x40 pole building. I'm pretty sure I have less room to work now, than I did before.
My barn is full of tools, a mustang, a skid steer, and a golf cart. The garage has 2 Mustangs in it, and the wife claimed the remaining bay.

Dusten and ALL: don't feel too sorry for Dusten because he has a 3 car attached garage and a 4 car detached garage with full size stairway to a loft.

Dusten so i know seeing a bigger shop in person is pretty cool, but might i suggest you look at the garage gallery and take a gander at some of the members 40 x 120's garages (shops) and some that are BIGGER that are packed with cars and or cool stuff.

I've got a 75 year old neighbor that totally restored a 1940 ford coupe in his 20 x 20 garage/ shop. he has an overhead crane, all the welding tools, grinders, anvil and a few benches and supplies and even with the car in there under a canvas tarp he still works inside it every day.

i have a 9 x 16 garage in my house that I've had probably more usable gym equipment in at one time that some commercial gyms have in their huge open gyms and now i'm in the process of turning it into a shop. sure i wish i had more space, but it gets filled with stuff you might not use so is it really necessary. don't get me wrong because as soon as the last of our 5 kids move out we are heading out of the city and finding some room and i'll build a shop there.

It ain't the size of the shop, mate. It's how ya use it!

Actually how you use it directly correlates to the shop. The smaller the shop the longer each project takes and if an emergency comes up then you can't just work on it somewhere else you have completely stop/pack up your current project and move over to the other one. Of course the caveat is: space is important if you use it, otherwise it becomes a junk area.
