Drives ~ I went to the pharmacy and bought some really pretty nail polish for it.....Chartreuse actually.....:p
Personally, I take offense to that crack from the guy on CL.....it's my vise, my time and none of his business what I do with it. I'd like to put that mouth breather on the business end of a 4 pound sledge on an anvil for a day and see how big he thinks his nuts are then.......

ok....somebody wound my clock springs up...time to go take a bubble bath...

Now UncleBuggy we all know, and frankly so should you, with your skin tone and eye color you can't pull of chartreuse. Seriously if you do the next one in any color other than corn flower blue I will never let you hear the end of it.:shocking::evil::lol_hitti

No "garage journal" weirdos need apply. This is a MAN'S VISE. You won't be putting nail polish on this one, shining it up, or making it pose for your gay pictures to show your internet friends.

And yet, he's still asking a Garage Journal price for it. I wonder where he got the value from. Hmmmmmm ?

Someone needs to buy it from him and tart it up in sparkled pink with a tu-tu. Then spam his email box with pictures of it traveling all across the country with his name on it.

I think the 'shine it up' crack is directed at me!:lol_hitti

Joe: not to burst your bubble, but your vise isn't the only pristine vise that's on this thread or even the most recent one. are you headed to California anytime soon and wouldn't it be fun if one or a few of us "little" guys showed up to buy his vise. since he has a stool for a bench i'd like to see where is C3 is mounted if he can even lift it or if he really owns one.

VA: :thumbup::thumbup:

JB & Jeremy: what's the name of that show Jeremy wants to produce with JB and Kevin called?? it would be damn funny that is for sure.

ALL: anybody using a vise today not like a press or an anvil ??

Went to a sale today and was happy to find this Wilton on the bench where it looked as it sat there for decades since its last use. I bought a bunch of stuff and asked if he would do $50 on the vise and it was a go. Its and older one with a date of 11-46 and has 4 1/2" jaws. She has a few dings here and there but I am betting under the grime and what looks like house paint in areas she will clean up nicely.

I wonder if this is what he's referring to.... Sure they look nice, but they will see daily use for the rest of my life. I bet that table his wilton is on wouldn't stand up to much.... You could park a car on this bench.... Probably because it actually gets used, unlike his.

Fretters: i'm still thinking about what you said earlier about giving up your vice for vices hobby to buy bigger tools. i remember when i said something like that and you said it won't happen. I did end up buying something bigger, but only to carry home some bigger vises and machines.

i think your shed is just too damn small and it's time to make another one in the backyard so you can have a little more room. if I was closer i'd bring my tools and lend a hand.

I do seem to vaguely recall that conversation. Seems the shoe's on the other foot now. :D Another shed is always a possibility. :D

BTW anything soaking in the vat currently like maybe an old vise?

Hopefully he is soaking that original Parkinson Perfect Vise :)

Must admit, I've not had anything in there for a few weeks now. Just can't seem to get five minutes to do owt of late. Hardly spent anytime in the shed recently either.

Did pick up that Woden I bought a few weeks ago the other day though; the 186E/8. That's another vice which is going to need a good session in the vat.

JB & Jeremy: what's the name of that show Jeremy wants to produce with JB and Kevin called?? it would be damn funny that is for sure.

Drives Its called "Chips and Smitty" and it absolutely has to happen.

ALL: I finally finished the machining on my reproduction Atlas X-Y Table vise jaws. Big thanks to Outlaw for the heads up on the group buy at owwm.org and to Bob at owwm.org for setting it up. I did a full write up on the machining here on the 101 thread but here are a few highlights. It's not Rev Scott level work but it will get the job done.

And here is the finish product on my Walker Turner DP.

That bench and its vises are looking really good, Vintage! A clean bench is a productive bench

I finally had enough of the messy bench, so I took everything off, refinished the top (sanded and new linseed oil) and reorganized it. Hopefully I can actually keep it this way this time.
Currently working on some chef's knives, and the rock island is very helpful! Every knifemaker needs a swivel jaw!

Finished cleaning the Yost 32C "JZ style," meaning all machined surfaces, jaws, and fasteners wire brushed and oiled, and all painted surfaces left as-is but cleaned with simple green. I like maintaining the working history of older bench vises... plus I have no patience for paint. Thrust bearing installed and lead screw lubed with blue moly. The vise force gauge comes in at 2500 psi = 5500 lbf.

Joe: don't be so damn sensitive. i read your last ad on Craigs and i'd be afraid to buy a vise from you with what you put in it even if it was a You **** price.

of course your vise spiffing skills have improved a lot lately so i'll leave it at that. what's on the spiffing up list for the weekend?:dunno:

Jeremy: Damn i saw that work you did and i think that's the first post of the Walker Turner DP i sold you. pretty amazing DP and now a working XY table with jaws too. you sir have outdone yourself and i agree with TJ that you are not any slouch at both picture taking and cutting steel. nice work.:thumbup:

get the film crew ready because i can hear the blood pumping in JB's veins from this side of the state and even if Kevin isn't quite ready i'm sure there are enough of his awesome pictures on this thread to get the show started.

Marty: you didn't overpay is all i can say.

Fretters: start collecting lumber and cement blocks. nothing in the vat?

Nice job Jeremy, believe me when I say that I make my jaws the same way you do, I just heat treat mine. Great job. I got two sites and would be happy to sell one of them, these jaw building is getting in my way of restoring the pile of vises I got stored.

What is this about a movie.

Two adverts. :) The nail polish one is $450, I believe, with the other one who won't answer questions being up for $50.

Ah! I saw the LA CL, and assumed it was the same ad...

What's in the water over there? Lots of constipation?

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/tls/5048136645.html

"I will not answer stupid questions.

Its a vise. Its 50 bucks. Its not a house."

Hey, now you know what the toes of an idjiot looks like! - Hey he didn't put toenail polish on them, he must be... "a Real Man"...

Actually I'm surprised the thing is still listed @ $50...

All of you 'Vise Junquies" must realize that the continuing rise in vise prices, are almost entirely, I believe...

OUR FAULT!!!

Hell, if you "search" Craftsman 5198, the result at the top of the pile is "The Garage Journal---"

If we hadn't shown the "unwashed masses" how well made, how "cool", how deserving of saving, and how functional the Craftsman 519X, Wilton "Bullet", 6" Reed, et al were...

We could still be buying these ferrous oxide encrusted, cast iron jewels for a quarter per pound...

We also wouldn't have to deal with people like the two dweebs in LA...Now, when folks find a big hunk of cast iron in the old barn, garage, store room, etc., immediately think that they've been given the keys to the gold vault in Ft Knox...

To reiterate---IT'S OUR OWN DAMN FAULT!!!

It's like one of our more astute members said, "Don't argue with an idiot, he'll drag you down to his level, and beat you with his expertise..."

My suggestion, let folks like the "LA2" hold on to their iron, until the price comes down to a level we can deal with...

Oh well, the cat's out of the bag now...the genie's out of the bottle...Pandora's box is open...etc...

Now, where is that "Pristine 5198" I've been looking for for-damnnear-ever...

Joe: i don't know about the rest of the guys and gals but i appreciate that font size because i didn't need my readers to read it. is that a #4 or ? so a Reed 105.5 weighs in at 120 what does your 107 weigh? i think i own a Prentiss #4 and is yours a swivel jaw that weighs about 100 pounds? sounds like an easy weekend workout plan and best of luck.

TOP: so the Craftsman was a 5197. nice find and you had to be smiling from ear to ear if you were reading the posts while you had it in the back of your truck on the way home. damn that is one awesome looking vise bling on the back of your tailgate. did you just sell and deliver them all or was that just the vises you spiffed up this week?

Oldie: just read your post and wanted to note this. BEFORE we knew there was actually a 5198 it was on top of the Google heap to look at this thread. it's a great vise and did you see Econ's 5198 he just painted over on his thread in the vintage tool section?

cheers and we all hope you find it so you can check that one off your bucket list.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Yes the #4 has 5.25" jaws and weighs 100 lbs or so. The Reed 107 is about 175 lbs with 7" jaws. The font is #4 i believe. The default font on my phone is too small to read!

You flippers are so sensitive.

It's just a vise. Good money selling to the hipsters though. They love the pretty paint.

What is this about a movie.

Thanks for the kind word rev. Scott. I won't be taking any business from you any time soon. It took me a week of lunch breaks to get this done. So time alone kills the deal.

The movie idea morphed from an original joke I made a few weeks back. June Buggy (Smitty, Uncle Buggy) was headed to Denver for treatment and you offered to pick him up and drive him to your shop. I cracked that we should make a reality show based on the two of you called "Chips and Smitty." Tag line: The misadventures of two metal master.

I know I would watch that show.

DRIVESIt was worth a grin... I sure was hoping for X=8 though. Oh well. This will make a nice replacement to my 5195 I sold.

I put out on the tail gate some of my "done up" vise's After work on a job I've been working on . Once a few gathered , more came and then I just started tell them all about each vise. The maker history, age and so on. Sold 4 in 30 min. 681 Athol, 1835 "C0"Wilton , Triple duty quick release Wilton and my GTD pipe vise. I already miss them...

The 5197 helps though. picked a few other things there as well. Block planes , old tool boxes and another vise as well but it's just a small littlestown 140. But in the cl photo did you happen to notice what the 5197 was next to? A stack of oak and ash rough sawn and dried. Looks like my next "bench saver for that # 2 Parker will be made of oak or ash !17 boards 15 bucks
