Saw one of those Craftsman 519X series vises yesterday at a local flea market, about a 4" jaw, was missing all the swivel base parts. He wanted $125, I passed.

Henrik: nice looking vice and welcome to the forum
TOP: so if you see a vise like Henrik's or if that one was reasonable you posted earlier i might be interested. i'm 100% Norwegian so i'm flexible on buying quality as much as where it was made from both sides of the pond. hell if we found out China or Japan made a better quality 300 pound vise with their thousands of years of technology i might be in that line to buy it if i could afford it. i'm sure they can make good steel, but the importers buying tools for us don't want to pay the price to get us some.
it would be nice if we had the factories here, but i think the attorneys let that ship sail a long time ago. i probably should delete this and will if it's too political.
BB: thanks and was wondering what happened to that vise

My wife bought this for my shop today. She said this is what I do to my vises!

neglecting swmbo joe?![]()

bluebolt, I've had dozens of the USA and Japan made 3 1/2" vises that otherwise look alike. In my experience the quality between both were identical. I know people love having Made In USA cast on the side so I do prefer getting those for resale but I don't personally find one to be any better than the other.
My Athol 102 1/4 restored. Nicely made little vise. Some people will really like the color, I'm not a fan. Hammerite red. Missed that little dab of red on the end of the spindle.
??????????????????????
Top, those surface every so often. Interesting design, not very practical past maybe craft level. if you really beat on the "anvil" it won't last long... for someone like my jewelry making daughter, it would be great. Hammering soft copper and the like would be fine
??????????????????????
Ive seen this piece twice, it accomplishes two things equally well, it makes a crappy vise and an even crappier anvil. Some design ideas deserved to die, this is one of them. It must have seemed cool at the time.....sort of like turbo charging a Corvair....
Charlotte guys again, here's a Rock Island. A little beat up but has the swivel base still..

Blue, the one you should be looking to get is the $50 Wilton I Posted a page or two back. I agree with you on the price, though. Too rough for that.
