MsMarieH's Finally Getting The Garage Done!!! (Updated with pics in post 6/7)

Hi guys and girls,

Our garage is probably never going to be the gorgeous showplace that so many of you have here, but it's going to be a hell of a lot better than it started out!

I had told you before that I had taken BEFORE pictures but no way in hell would I show them until I at least had IN PROGRESS pictures... LOL... Well, we've made some progress, so I'm ready to share. These are NOT for the faint of heart...

Here's what we were starting with...

As you can see, we had accumulated a TON of **** in our garage. Sheesh! But I'm happy to say that while I don't actually have AFTER pictures done yet (since we are only in progress), we have gotten rid of about 40-60% of the junk that was out there - one way or another.

We rented a POD to store everything while we are having the garage stuff finished off. The work being done is a combination of bringing in outside experts and some do it yourself.

We've gone through all the **** fairly meticulously (well except the last 1/3 or so where we ran out of time and started shoving things in boxes). Here's the garage fully emptied out, showing before and during the epoxy floor installation.

We used Floorguard from Aurora, IL (a competitor from Premier Garage). I am really pleased with them and will be happy to write them a reference. They actually called back, were very polite when I stopped by their show room, showed up for the quote on time, showed up for the install on time, friendly nice workmen, helped me put the last of the stuff in the POD since I hadn't had time to do it before they got there, and cleaned up after themselves. Here's Day One (first layer down). They come back tomorrow to do the top coat type stuff.

And here is the first coat of the epoxy floor. We are using the Charcoal Granite finish. Tomorrow they come back to finish it with the top coat. Then they will also vacuum up any stray sprinkles.

Since the steps were pretty cheap and crappy looking, we had them epoxy those too.

Next step will be insulation, drywall... and if we don't run out of money - cabinets!

Looks great! I'd for sure add some Grip strips to those steps to break them up visually though. They look like they aren't even there.

Yes, I definitely agree. We are actually having the epoxy guys do a contrasting strip. They aren't done with the epoxy floor yet. This was just the end of day one.

We have already been heave hoeing! We got rid of a bunch of stuff already.

I'll check with hubby on the Popeye game. I think we actually also have brand new decals to put on the sides that we got from Nintendo. As far as I know it works fine, though I haven't tested it recently. How much would you be offering? Since I see you are in the Chicagoland area too we should be able to figure something easy out for pickup or delivery.

Thanks. I really like the idea of keeping the pictures all together on the first page. Just makes it so much easier to view later.

Oh I find that unlikely and I sure as hell would expect that to be covered by my floor warranty if it did happen.

Naaahhh.. hubby and I did a garage sale once and absolutely hated it. We're not made for sitting out there for hours. Took us no time at all to start saying buy this, get something free, because we were so bored and wanted to close down. Plus we got ticked. Our stuff was priced super cheap and yet things still walked. Decided it wasn't worth the aggravation for us. Not much of the stuff we got rid of had any real value. Only big ticket item would have been the Popeye game and an old treadle style sewing machine. Everything else was not worth more than a few bucks at most.

Hubby did say he would consider selling it (as long as I let him split the proceeds 50/50 between the Harley and Garage funds LOL)

They are the sloppiest ofr all the crafts, mainly due to the materials they use....but, they do not clean up after themselves! They leave globs of sheetrock mud everywhere - & don't even try to walk around them but just walk through them, tracking sheetrock mud everywhere!

Then, it hardens & you have to scrape it off the floor!

I'm with you on the garage sale idea... I've had a couple and its not worth the hassle. I have much better luck with craigslist, ebay or just giving the stuff to goodwill/the blind/dav, etc just to get it outta my way.

I'm choosing to think positive. LOL.. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it if there are problems. However, I will caution the drywall installers up front that I expect
them to do a professional job that doesn't harm my floor. Thanks for the heads up.

Mostly just a clean organized space. General storage of supplies (car washing, BBQ/smoker, camping, etc.).

Hubby wants to be able to do a little work on his motorcycle and do small workbench type projects. I want to be able to do some minor projects (like furniture refinishing). We're not likely to be tearing apart car engines (though hubby would probably enjoy doing that too) or doing welding or anything like that - though I would love to learn how to! I would honestly love to learn more about woodworking and be able to build some things myself, but the truth is, that's down on the priority list of things I am working on right now.
