Don't you use them?

Yep, but first I have to get my shop set up and straightened out and then weld up some stands along with making a new welding table. I have two other crappy vises on stands that will do in the meantime.

TJ: it's been a long good day and you are right it's a 600 SJ Wilton that looks more like an American Scale or Columbian vise. i'm not sure which company made it and maybe Wilton made it themselves since it say Schiller Park on it's side. it really looks a lot like a American Scale #79 and maybe Wilton bought their patent when American Scale closed their doors in the 1960's.

whats with that slide support?:wtf:

What are you guys seeing with that Parker, looks like a pristine example to me? If you're wondering about that little tab sticking down under the slide support, it makes more sense when it is apart, it is like a little leg to help support the main casting when it's not on the swivel base. Suspect it made machining of the main casting a little easier.

I've been putting off some major rearranging in my shop for far too long, so I used the opportunity to get a few family photos. I barely got started on sorting out the shop but I did manage to wrestle most of these into cabinets for temporary storage after the photo session.

I present the "C" family (including a Baby Bullet for scale).

Of course just when you start thinking that the C-3 is massive, along comes a 608 to put things into perspective.

Now, where did I leave my truss?
Pretty certain I am going to need it after today.

A darn fine collection:bowdown:

Hi everyone, I need some help. I was talking to an old retired chap about his 6" fixed base Parker (which he wants $250 for and which is pictured) when he mentions he has a 6" Paramo swivel base in excellent condition as well. My question is, what is a 6" Paramo worth? I offered him $350 for the pair. What is your opinion?:dunno:

A photo of two more from rearranging the shop yesterday: my Athol 616 and Reed 33

20150603_185146-small_zpscc7zpkye.jpg

A few are not pictured: Reed 134 1/2R, Reed 203 1/2, a second Baby Bullet, Dawn 4 1/2 O.S., Fulton 5190, and a Yost 750 DI which brings my current total to 14 vises. 9 are awaiting restoration.

I am beginning to think that there may be something very seriously right with me. ;)

Joe, even if you went up a little on the Paramo that would be a lot better deal than this beat on 978 @ $850 ( CL in Knoxville TN ) The stand is a heavy one !

This thread gives an idea of price people are willing to pay in the US for a Paramo 6" http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144487

Thanks Get for reminding me that an IDIOT 5 miles from me sold this same exact vise to the scrapper and then couldn't get it back just two weeks ago....

Joe I think that seller has that blue stand on CL. It's the one I told you about.

Thanks for the thread. I searched but didn't see that one. I'm pretty firm on my $350 offer. They are a LONG drive for me and although I want some more big steel, I already have 7 on my bench over 6" that are inline for restoration....I may just have to let these goooooooooo:shocking:

Hopefully you'll get them for that offer, at least you'll know you aren't over paying :)

$100-150 (depending on condition) if it looks like mine. It weighs 102 lbs.

Veeps, that is my buddy in VT who sources me the anvils. I told him about the stand, it was 30 minutes from him. It is a Baldor, he got it for $75. He is happy, THANKS FOR THAT!

He picked up 2 anvils he wants to sell me, a Peter Wright and another one around 150 lbs marked Birmingham. Actually he wants to trade me the 6" Polish Vise, a 126lb Peter Wright Anvil & the Baldor stand in Exchange for the shiny Parker 26x vise. I really want some cash though...

I recently bought a 6" Paramo and it was in nice mechanical shape, and decent cosmetic shape. I paid $150 and was pretty happy with that for a precise 100lb vise.

A couple recent acquisitions. I believe they are a Wilton 450s and a 840? Anyone know where I can get a swivel base for the little guy?

Picked this one up last week. A Woden 186E/8, 5-1/4" jaws.

I don't know about the rest of the "GJ Vise Junquies"...

But...

I think these are some seriously stout looking clampers...:rocker:

How strong are jaws that need bolts to hold them on???

Really like those Brother Fretters...:bounce:

I see where you are coming from Oldie but really when the force is clamping there really isn't much needed to attach the jaws. The more pressure on the job the more pressure to hold the jaws in place.
So why are the big boys always bolted in?

They are bolted rather than screwed for a number of reasons that I've seen.

If it's just screws through the face the screw heads get mangled and are difficult to remove, or tighten if they loosen.
I've seen those where the casting is threaded come loose and where they haven't been re tightened soon enough the thread in the casting gets destroyed.

With bolts you can tighten them more, tighten them easier, the threads are in the replaceable part rather than the casting and they are easier to get the bolts out when it's time for new inserts

I know...

I was commenting on the fact that the bolts "looked" stouter than screws, either in the rear, or from the front of the jaws...

They look like...

"You're going to have to work to get whatever you have clamped between my jaws back out of them..."

"Ain't nuttin' eva comin' looz"...

If it's here...it's HERE---know what I mean, Bubba???

Substantial looking vises...

I wouldn't mind finding one of those, or the Steel Records...say a 36 or 38...

Sure, I understand. It was more of a rhetorical question/comment really.

I'm never going to be able to look at one of these vices without smiling now, with those thoughts running through my mind. :D

Substantial looking vises...

Indeed. We might not throw quite as much metal at our vices as over your side of the pond, but we do know how to make them look mean. :D

Slipping one into hand luggage when you visit the wifes relatives probably wouldn't be an option? :D

No. But if I get to do any transatlantic boat trips again.....
Well just saying. :D

After all I brought one decent vise back from France and England is not to far.

Fretters: maybe Craptain could take an old US made one in the suitcase for the ride over for a swap? nice looking duo and is it in the tank (vat) yet or did i miss where you told us that it is? or Fretters maybe we can meet in Iceland or Norway because my wife wants to see that part of the world sometime in the next few years. you been to either??

i like the bolts coming from the backside and wish more of the bigger vises (vices) had that design. Exactly what CW said that the threads getting trashed it they are would be in the disposable part of the vise (vice) and over tightening wouldn't break the cast most likely.

We've all seen vises with the shoulder under the jaws missing, usually caused by a BFH or a long cheater pipe.

Having a rear bolt might help alleviate that.

Who makes "Taskmaster" vises?
They look an awful lot like Wilton Machinist vises.

Vice smuggling. That'd be a new one on the customs chaps. :D

It's not in the tank as yet. I've been a bit under the weather this last week or so, (back to normal now though), so I've slipped behind on doing owt with it.

The only time I've ever left the shores of this Isle was to go to the Isle of Wight, so I'm no traveller, as you can likely guess. :D

They also make it simple for fitting replacement inserts when it comes to marking the holes too. Plus, you can make and fit full face inserts if drilled correctly, with no holes in the insert faces to mark the workpiece. Especially handy with finer work pieces.

If you ever wondered what a brand-spanking new Wilton C-0 (10200) looks like when you only paid $225 for it, it looks exactly like this:

20150603_132928_resize_zpswyt7bmzg.jpg

20150603_132911_resize_zpshqijxmcu.jpg

Oh, there was also a small-ish UPS shipping charge so the total was just over $250.

Thanks for the heads-up TriJeff, I now owe you 2, count them, yes, 2 beers!.

BTW: This completes my Wilton "C" collection, I now have one of each (photos soon).

:)

Just wondering, how is the jaw alignment when fully closed on that c-0? My 1765 is fully aligned when closed.
