Slipping one into hand luggage when you visit the wifes relatives probably wouldn't be an option? :D
The Record 36's weigh in at 30kg, I know someone who bought a Land Rover gearbox over in his luggage split in half with each half weighing about 30kg. So it is doable :)

By Godfrey, that would work...:D

Some more vise(vice) humor...

"Don't even think about getting this out of here---without I say so!!!"

"Smash beer cans???...Why, my good man, I smash beer KEGS!!!"

"The only thing I can't smash, are (insert favorite football club's name here--) balls!!!"

"I wouldn't have shrugged like Atlas, if I'd been holding up the world!!!"

I've bid on this Steel beastie...but the freight charges have arrived at my max...one of my Brothers-in-law probably could use it...so, we'll see...

This 5" Exposed Screw Reed is just about the toughest looking American vise ever made...at least in yrhmblsrvnt's opinion...It was bought off Ebay, for not a lot by a GJ member...Sorry B@#tard that he is...outbid me, he did...

Nice scores! Can you show a few more pics of the 840 including the date on the slide?

Bluebolt here's some more pics. Wow 7-46 That thing is older than my parents. I figured it was from the 60's. Still works great, has 3 different coats of paint on it, and the anvil surface has seen better days. Paid $35 for it. Would love to find swivel base for it. Maybe I'll have to make one.

Fretters and CW: i'm packed and ready to go. these 4 bags had a 150 pound Morgan, 30 pound mill vise and a 50 pound Rock Island swivel vise in them. not the easiest to haul up ramps and through airports, but doable. :D

Oldie: good luck on the auction. also nice post :D

DIF: Well if you bring them this way with some nice American vises in I'm sure I could spare a Record 36 and a 112, maybe even a Parkinson or a Samsonia as well :)

Who makes "Taskmaster" vises?
They look an awful lot like Wilton Machinist vises.
They are a Wilton clone company from many years ago. TaskMaster was the company name. They were made in Taiwan and are of decent quality but clearly not as good as the original.

Picked this up today. Still deciding what to do with this one. The seller has blasted it and then given it a blow over with a spray can. Nothing wrong with the blasting job the seller has done btw. He seems to have done a decent job of it. It's merely that I don't like blasting which is why I'm classing that as a negative. It also has a fairly beaten rear end on the slide, and the leadscrew ball and QR lever look like they have been submerged. :D

Can't decide whether to just strip it down and give it a thorough clean and grease, a bit of proper paint over the existing and then put it to use as a vice for outside use, else whether to dunk it in the tank and start from scratch and possibly class this as a tart up exercise, with the possible addition of a bit of artistic flair, if I get the urge. Between the blasting and the overall condition, I've not really anything to salvage on the originality front, and it wouldn't be too criminal for me to try and tart it up to excess, well beyond anything I would normally consider doing, due to those reasons either. Neither would the condition make me guilty about keeping and using it outside, hence why I can't decide which way to go with this one.

Why did I actually buy this one? Several reasons:

1) The seller said it had 5" jaws, so I was hoping it was actually a No.8. Unfortunately though, it's not. It's another 8A, with 6" jaws, (yes, I know. How oft does anyone display disappointment due to something being bigger than expected. :D I was hoping it was a 8 to fill the gap in my collection between the No.7 and the No.8A though).

2) It was only a few miles away from me.

3) It wasn't expensive.

Picked up 4 of the Craftsman professional 4 1/2" vise locally the other day for myself and some friends. $86 plus tax. According to the salesperson, might be the last of them in the state.

I suppose I could grow accustomed to that blue over time. :D

On a tangent, was just thinking about you the other day. Wondering how you'd gone on with that No.5? which got damaged? Any joy on getting that welded up as yet?

The No 5 is still exactly the same as it was, been to busy to get to it but its not forgotten about.

I just picked this vise up today at a local flea market shop. A couple of things: it has a couple chips on the anvil and didn't realize till I got home that it was missing one of the pipe jaws (is it possible to find a replacement). Other than those 2 things I think it is in pretty good shape. I plan on using it. Probably clean it up really good but don't think I'll paint it. I'd be interested in what folks thought it was worth before I say what I paid for it. Thanks.

Got my first Wilton.... baby bullet dated 1948. Its mounted to a perplexing positioning device. Pics are as I got it. The positioning jig gives all the same range of motion that a Pow-R-Arm would. My google-fu is failing me though. I cannot find anything whatsoever relating the JIMCO positioning device to anything at all. I can find the Dye Manufacturing company. They actually still exist. I sent an email to them to see if someone there can shed any light on the positioning jig.

The jig was intended for something else - original had grey paint that I can see in a couple of places and the mounting plate was drilled just to mount the little bullet to it. It has 4 other holes with captive screws as well as a threaded center hole. Its very very precise and strong. Heavier than the little bullet by a good bit. The base rotator is smooth as silk with absolutely zero play.

The vise itself is also in excellent condition. Works great but obviously could use some attention in the looks department. The red chipped up and splattered paint is not in very good shape. Anyways it still cost a good bit but a good third or more less than they have been averaging on ebay. I'm happy - cute little thing for sure and will be used as it should be on my small electronics workbench.

VA: i bet you feel better now. yes??

WilB: did you buy 4 of those Craftsman vises? that might be the first post of a receipt I've seen on the vise thread without a vise. did you know your debit card # was on the receipt?

Mix: very cool baby bullet and especially the interesting stand for it. can you post up a few more pictures of the stand and in different positions if you have time?

Fretters: weren't you saying something last week about not buying any more vices and selling the ones you have? my vote is to stick it in the vat and paint it maroon and trade it for a 5 and 2 inch vices.

CW: sounds like a deal if we are able to take a trip across the pond some day in the near future.

cheers and have a great weekend all

Space wise, my problem is that vices aren't my only weakness. The Drummond collection tends to keep growing too, so I'm retty much royally screwed. :D I have another of those due to come here within the next few weeks.

Everyone calm down on the card No.

Neither the rewards card No. or the Debit card No. were exposed. They are allowed to show the last 4 digits; the rest were properly masked off.

All: Yes I'm sorry the debit card wasn't on the receipt and just kinda a wake up call for those that have posted visa cards to show size. Anyway it looks like the cashier rang up one vise then I'm guessing when he saw they were $85 each he wanted 3 more. The total was throwing me off too.

Fretters: So your real vice is old cast iron and older the better

Drive,

Your exactly right on how the transaction went. Once the salesperson scanned it and I saw the price I called my friends and asked if they wanted in. Needless to say, they were. I double checked the receipt before posting and was comfortable with the way it appeared.

Quite happy with this craigslist buy at first glance. Runs very smooth, no evidence of drama with multiple layers of patina that seemed consistent. Jaws look perfect, screw runs VERY smooth. Slightly ganked handle, but should be nice with a bit of press work. Had to pay his asking price of $40! I think I did good with this Columbian 504 1/2. Cant read the letters after that just yet due to the rust. Not sure what they mean anyway.

Fretters that is a tart up vice if I've ever seen one, maybe even a bit of a hussy.

Picked up this 5" Starrett Athol vise this week at auction for $100. I don't have it yet but appears to be in good shape. How'd I do? I can't find any details on these vises. I think it will make a nice vise to attach to the cart (same auction) that will become my first welding table. The cart is 24"x36"x31" with 5/8" thick plate on top.
