I Like My Vise. I may have paid too much for this Wilton 1644 at the flea market shop--$53.16 including tax but that was 15% off the asking price of $59.00. I brushed it up a bit and wiped it off with some Rem oil. I think it looks aok to me. It' s going to suit my purposes in my garage. I guess I could have paid about the same for a brand new vise from Lowe's, Harbor-Freight or Home Depot. But I think it has character and you can't buy that. And thanks to a member of this forum I'm going to have a replacement for the missing half of the pipe jaws (Thanks Topop). Mounted it on my workbench today.

Good question, the vice in question is a Christmas gift I did not look to see the manufacture. I will have to find out. I am not sure how old it is given it has been recondition.

It looks like the "BF" japan version having owned just about all of them. If it was earlier, it would say "made in the USA" below the model number on the other side. Also, my Japan vise had a bit more of a dull color red and was completely painted, looked very much like yours.

For what my opinion is worth, I consider it a quality vise, enjoy it.

Here's the static casting of a 5" woden clone in my 6" morgan to give you an idea of the massiveness of these.

VA & Outlaw: thanks for the short stories about Starrett and Athol. sure isn't always the easy road to get to the top of your profession of choice.

MD: as i mentioned before your Buffalo drill press vise is very cool and thanks for sharing more pictures.

Shift: i think VA has a Mercury 4 inch bench vise and if I remember correctly it looks like a Morgan and was probably made by them or related some how.

Cheers for those. :) That gives a perspective I can relate to. You chaps really didn't skimp on cast when making yours, did you. :D
Well us Canadians really can't take credit, as our vises are all the English style. That woden clone is a henry made in london Ontario. Never seen a Canadian vise that wasn't english style. American vises are about as common here as they are over there! This is one of the one's drives brought up. Probably 80% of the (good) vises around here are records.

That morgan weighs just under 150 pounds. None of the thinner parts in the casting you see in English vises. Every part is just about as solid as is possible.

I was forgetting you were Canadian. :D You wouldn't happen to have something like a No.26 you could place alongside it, would you? That would give probably the best like for like comparison possible.

One day, I will get my hands on an American one. It's one of those itches I want to scratch. :D

Unfortunately not, between my dad and I our English style collection is two record #3s, and the 5" canadian woden clone. That's a real nice vise! I think it's a lot heavier than the records I have seen.

Drives : Thanks for the info on my little Mercury clamp on. It has a cool little label with the wings of Mercury still somewhat visible.

Remember the postage...

Remember the postage...

Remember the postage...

(By the way, the postage wasn't too bad, until the Postal Service did away with "Surface" transport...it took six weeks, but you could send a hundred pounds for about $ 80.00...Now that same 80 pounds would be well into three figures, and would have to be broken up into several lighter weight packages...)

Remember the postage...:mad::(:confused:

Question for the Board---What is the cheapest way to send something to the United Kingdom???

If you are under 20 lbs, flat rate boxes work great.

Probably some kind of freight forwarder, some friends of mine imported a load of pipe benders and other machinery for making roll cages a few years back and they used some forwarder who combined it with a load of other stuff .... is not quick but was cheap for heavy stuff

Anybody that wants to add this super rare, never seen before Mercury clamp on vise to their collection can have it in exchange for a :thumbup:far more common Wilton baby bullet. I'll pay postage both ways!

Here is a picture of the Henry #5 all restored and polished thanks to my son, and mounted on my bench. It is a really nice vise that was in great shape.

Henry vises were made in Canada by a company called Craftools (started by a fellow named Henry in 1940). The company was sold to am American company in 1953 -- not sure if the buses with this name continued after that.

Anyway, I'm very happy with it --nice and tight and very sturdy.

I treated myself to a little birthday present today and made a stop at a sale this morning. Needless to say, the line was long so I kept going. Later, I took lunch and snuck back over. The line was gone so I got out and did some shopping. Unfortunately the vise I saw in the pictures was gone but I found a few other items I wanted and started to make a pile.

At the checkout, I see a guy with his foot on the vise asking for a price! It seems the price was too high so he put it back but didn't have to walk to far before it found a new home

3" American Scale Red Seal All mine for 40.00:bounce: as I was checking out, the lady said, "finally somebody is buying that thing! It's been picked up and put down all morning"
