I'm looking at maybe purchasing a new set of pry bars and found

6pc OTC set for 96$ on amazon with good reviews

I haven't seen these discussed much around here but if you know or have these, how have they held up? Should I buy a different brand?

Sizes are 8 12 18 24 32 and 36in

I was contemplating that set myself...

The OTC set, Mayhew Dominator set, and the Craftsman Professional set...

I've never heard anything bad about the Mayhew set, and, I could be wrong here, I believe Mayhew makes the Craftsman Pro set...

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them...

The two five piece sets are about same price, as the OTC set...

I'd go with either Wilde or Mayhew. OTC left a bad taste in my mouth awhile back.

For what's it worth

I just brought a 4 piece Matco set. Rebranded by someone in sure. They flex like an uncooked hotdog

I'm still using my snap on pry bars. They just collect dust

I bought a single OTC pry-bar in the line as pictured, but longer/bigger than what comes in the sets.

I forget if it was Communist Chinese, or Taiwanese, or Korean. Asian import, anyway.

I was disgusted, and told them so. They offered to send me a merchandise credit, I told them to keep it. I'm pretty-much done with OTC. Owned by Bosch, but they were going downhill fast even before the Bosch take-over.

All the other guys at work have the OTC set you pictured. My buddy has had his 10 yrs. no warranties, they all are still great. We have abused them and not even a chip. Half my snappys are broke. The other half have already been warrantied. The OTC ones get the beatings and love it. I would buy them. I would also buy the mayhews.

Define low budget. Did the handles fall apart, do the caps not connect with the bar, did you bend it like a pretzel? If your only complaint is that its made in China that's a fairly pathetic excuse to rip on a product. I prefer USA as much as the next guy but quality costs money no matter where its produced and USA does not automatically equal quality. We can make plenty of garbage. OTC in general makes fairly good affordable tools, the only thing im not a fan of is their Stinger line which is basically HF. Other than that they are an excellent choice despite where they're making their stuff.

As far as the price, the set is on AAP so with a $50 off $100 coupon I can get it down to $75. Even at $96 its still a good deal. The Mayhey Dominator 36" alone costs $60.

Made-in-China is in itself a valid reason for customer displeasure.

Sourcing a product from the most-reprehensible nation on Earth is bad enough. As I said, this bar may have been Taiwanese or Korean, and that isn't as bad as Red Chinese. Assuring that the customer can't find out country-of-origin without buying the product is unconscionable. Then having the gall to charge USA-made prices for imported **** makes it even worse.

The "Stinger" line used to be OTC's foreign-made low-cost line. The "Stinger" name meant "Imported". OTC screwed that pooch, now there's no way to tell.

I have the Craftsman and Craftsman Pro lines as well as a few larger Mayhew prybars (including the 58" Mac Daddy!) I would say you can't go wrong with the Cman PRO or the Mayhew as they both have the cap so you can give them a little whack if need be.

The regular craftsman has moved to overseas production instead of Wylde and are not nearly as nice fir an finish wise as they use to be. I have no experience with them though, I figure I have enough prybars.

Since the Cman Pro and Dominator bars aren't readily available for a decent price in Canada and the OTC's are cheap on Amazon.ca, that's what I went with. I've reefed and pounded on the OTCs plenty and have had no complaints whatsoever, they're really sturdy. The soft handles are pretty comfy but do tend to attract dirt - luckily a wipe down with WD40 cleans them up instantly.

That said, if I could have gotten the Dominators for a comparable price, I would have.

The Craftsman Pros are the same manufacturer as Matco truck brand pry bars. USA made, very nice handles with striking caps, and with the 2 add on sizes (10" and 31") you are good to go, unless you need a 36"+. I also have the mayhew dominator straight pry bars. They are also good quality, but the handles do wear more in my opinion with heavy use than the Cmans. The dominators are also USA made with a striking cap. You can't really go wrong with either one, but I lean to the Cman PROS. Not the other Cmans with the plastic handle.

Agree. I greatly prefer US products over Asian trash. Quality is not the only reason. I have no desire to suckle our country's competition.

I have ancient Snap-Ons and recently bought the Mayhew sets. Very worthy tools. My Snap-On handles are starting to crack after a couple generations of hard use, but the warranty is still valid and the metal is still pristine. I imagine my American tools are older and worked longer than most of the people who like dime store tools have been alive. Maybe my preference is because I grew up with steel Tonka trucks and they had plastic Gameboys. :bounce:

Dude, I think you need calm down and travel the world some. Chinese are by far not the most reprehensible country in the world. Been to Syria recently? Iran, North Korea, Russian, Burma, Venezuela? The list goes on and on.

Not saying they are great people or that they are not competing with the US, but this over the top stuff is ignorant and dangerous.

These are what Cat sells for their soft handles pry bar set. I've been using them for two years and have no complaints. I buy American every chance I get, but for a set of prybars that get used and abused, these work.

I have a snap on tire tool that is my pry bar, it's been all I've ever needed. I don't need to do a lot of prying I guess.
