New brake rotor. Change races?

The daily driver 98 S10 2WD got new front brake rotors, bearings, and pads today.
Used new Advance Auto's finest Wearever rotors and National bearings all from China. Although the grease seal is from Mexico.

I have never changed the races that come pre-installed in the rotor. Just lubed up the new bearings, dropped them in, and went on with never any problems.
End the job with 2 races left over. Like I did today.

Is that what you guys do?
Or do you knock out the installed races and press in what is in the bearing box "matched" to the new bearing?

Just wondering.

I used to drive the races out and put in the races that come with the bearing, but stopped as it was a pain, and I've never experienced a premature failure because of it. (not to say it could not happen....)

You wouldn't believe how many people I've seen use the old bearings. They are so cheap I would never want to chance it.

Done it both ways many times over the eons. Never had a problem either way. I'd say it's your choice.

That being said, if i have new races, they get used.

Didn't know you could obtain bearings without inner and outer races! Since they are matched, if you don't change the race, why change the bearing?

New bearing with new race versus old bearing with new race that's why. New bearing put into a new race that came in the new rotor means two fresh bearing surfaces is good. Old bearing in new race means any wear the bearing has wont work well with the fresh race..

This has always been my thinking, and have questioned the logic of the manufacturer installing those races to begin with. The races are easily changed and I am one that will reinstall the old bearing (with the matching race) if still in good shape, which it should be if it was kept properly lubricated all along. Never encountered a problem doing it that way.

BTW don't throw out those extra races.....keep some around your drill press so you don't drill into the table. Make decent parallels too for setting up things.

I like to bounce them and listen to the ring. Considered making wind chimes out of them many times

Great idea! I was gonna make myself a tube wind chime, but Dad made nice ones as Christmas gifts last year.

You can't.

Rotors come with new races pre installed

If you buy hearings they come with a race as well.

I personally just use the new race in the rotor regardless new or old bearings

Yes you can.

Maybe your parts store doesn't have them in stock, but bearings & races are available individually, or as a set. Also called a cup & cone. The part number for each is on the item.

But the price for the bearing alone isn't much less than the set.
