Just a thought on the "missing" rear mounting tab/hole...

If it was broken off, they did a helluva job smoothing out the break...

The "place" where it "should" be, is really factory smooth...

Maybe these 2"'ers were only two hole mounters, or after, the original mini-clampers were found to need three mounts for stability, the third tab/hole was added in a later version...HMMM???

As others have said---"Very Mysterioso"...:headscrat:wtf:

(Shiftless---You've been outbid...I wonder who???...HMMM...)

That's WAY too many "maybe's" to get my money!!! :lol_hitti

All: Any of you that really want it should know that I won't snipe the auction unless the last bid is under a hundred. At least that is what I think TODAY.

Craftsman 51861, 51865, 51871 owner's manual

I picked up a file full of catalogs and manuals this morning. Inside was a sheet for a Craftsman vise. Since VM doesn't list paperwork for vises, I thought I'd scan it and post the pics here for those that might be interested.

Granted, it's a swivel base, swivel jaw, missing the "jaw pin".
Now that got my attention!

I sure dread going back up there again.---I'm scared of heights, and the air is so thin up there, and things goes to spinning, everything gets blurry, I go to pushing buttons and pulling triggers, and by morning I don't have a clue what all I've bought.---But a man's got to do what a man's got to do.:dunno:

My wife went to the Classic Iron Show in Evansville, In. The show is presented by the Southern Indiana Antique Machinery Club (SIAM). It features antique farm / garden tractors / implements, working displays, and flea market vendors.

Pictured below, I found an interesting BIG vise (6 inch jaws) at one of the flea market booths. My guess is that it weighs 250# - 300#. I don't know what the brand is because there were no casting embellishments. Their asking price was waaaaaay too high for it, based on its condition. I also thought the swivel base lock was unique. It looked like you had to pull up a pin to get it to move.

All movement was seized by rust. If it didn't have the crack in the slide, I would have likely made an offer. In fact, I would have given 50$ for it as is, to give me a misfit vise to challenge & expand my skills on.

Another thing that stopped me was that I bought a truck load of cabinets & equipment from a defunct powder coat shop, with my pickin' money. Got to get in gear & move the stuff out. :3gears:

Anyway, I thought I would post these pictures for your review:

Mark: i bet the cabinets were a good buy so best of luck getting them home and installed.

the unmarked vise is a Prentiss and except for the damaged back of the dynamic's slide i doesn't look that bad. with it unmarked on the sides you can usually see the Prentiss and a # in the top of the static behind the pin. i see a #22 which would make it a 165 pound vise like this one i own. it should be a #23 if it's in the 250-300 pound range. you tell me now that you might be able to see the number and blow up the original picture on your computer.

Zoomie: i used do have the no drinking rule while playing craps in Vegas and Reno so i guess having that rule for Ebay or any auctions might be a good rule. so how much is that per pound for a little old US steel?

ALL: beware of the snipers they are always lurking. interesting that it only has 2 mounting holes and where the 3rd one should be is pretty polished.

VA: you know i think i remember Zoomie or maybe it was another member saying the #23 is only 207 pounds, but as i looked up Dayid's list when Mark posted his find i found 270 pounds on Dayid's #23

http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Prentiss_Vise

where did you find the catalog page on Dayid's??

ALL: maybe with Dayid's blessing and help we can start our own data base of all the vises here on GJ. we already have several hundred vise company names on the Vise Repair 101 thread's #2 post. anybody know Dayid personally and i personally want to thank him for all he has done to help me (us) over the years trying to sort out all these old vises.

Drives & va,

With that vise being on a milk crate, it looked precarious. I'm pretty good at estimating weight if I can tip it up a little.

Thanks for the information one of the biggest pluses of that vise is that the original swivel pin is present. I've found many with a bolt in place of the original pin (which may lead to a cracked pivoting jaw), or a welded jaw.

Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and make an offer.

Drives,
The cabinets that I mentioned will hopefully have a good home to go to. I've been buying equipment for a number of years, and it always pains me to see another local business close its doors.

Ok, here's my score from Zoomie:

The orange one is a Prentiss #23 (7" jaw) with a Parker 953-1/2 I bought in PA recently.

Green one is a Reed 305

Chas Parker 806 in Gray

Chas Parker 976 in rust

Near mint Chas Parker 106 in Red

I sold him the Prentiss #23, Reed #305, Parker #806, Parker #976 and Parker #106 that day.

Mark: same here and feeling yours and the business owner's pains. I helped 3 steel fab companies close their doors this year because they can't compete with the cheap products from off shore. one was retiring a 100 year old business that only a small piece of it will be still functioning with a new owner.

we're heading or already are there in a disposable society where items only last a few years and they need to be replaced.

any idea on the width of the jaws of that Prentiss vise you posted? My 22 is a 6 inch jaw and can you see the # better on the back of the static jaw in your pictures?

VA & Zoomie: thanks for the help and the #23 Prentiss is on my short list since i have the 19, 19.5, 20, 21, 22 & 26 swivel jaw vises that Prentiss made. i'll have to find the small ones like Zoomie owns and this little chrome maybe half or a 1 pounder that works and could almost be on a key chain.

Zoomie,---was phy6 already a collector or was he just an instant collector.---I remember his car was jacked up in the front and sagging in the back.

He became an instant collector that day, lol! He had a young son or two and I believe was expecting another and wanted to secure some vises for their future workshops. Pretty cool idea I thought!

SC: I"m pretty sure the 62 are part #'s because they are on the static and the dynamic jaws. pretty typical of the castings at the older vise companies. with the style and letter on that Athol i'd say for sure pre 40's and more likely pre 30's made. Athols are one of my favorite brands because of how well made they were, but i just don't see many on this side of the US.

were you swearing in your post or is that a sort of spell check? :bounce:

Zoomie: another kind gesture and i'm guessing you bought a few anvils or a few vises with the funds from Phy6.

I'm not saying it's "wrong" or "broken", but I have one that style and there are 3 mounting tabs... That one doesn't "appear" broken, if it is, they made it very smooth, but mine has a 3rd mounting tab in the back, under the slide... Interesting...:headscrat

Take care!

Oh I'm absolutely sure it's broken :bounce:

Nuts and Oldldh : You sound pretty sure of yourself there. How are you so positive about the missing mounting tab? if the general consensus is that it is broken, that means no other GJ members will be bidding except for maybe the one or two of us that already have low bids in, right?

So I get this call yesterday from my friend Richard.
He says he bought a vise at a yard sale, and was
Wilton one of the brands that I recommended.
He told me there was lots of tools and I should go and
look as the vise was still bolted to the bench.
I go and look and there it was, Wilton 835.

Today he comes by and said come out and look in the pickup.
Was I sure that this was the right brand.
Yep
Where did I want it.

$50, it's good to have friends.

One ear busted off of the swivel, and some chips from the jaws. Dated 6-46

One question. Did Wilton's early vises not have handles for the swivel adjustment, or did they have the acorn nuts that are on this one?

Exactly what I was hoping every one would think. :lol_hitti

For my use, it would never need a third tab.

The early ones just had the acorn nuts from what I've read on here, but I could be talking out my backside so wait for an expert to chip in their 2p :)

Drives,
The jaw width on that Prentiss pivot jaw was 6". I'm unable to see the numbers in the static jaw picture.

All,
There was a C Parker 974 for 125$, and a Columbian 504 for 100$. Both vises were aerosol overhauled, but in good shape. I thought the prices were reasonable for a flea market booth.

Well fellows, I've made up my mind.---While I'm up in the GOT TO HAVE IT, I'm going for the Wilder All Shapes Vise also.---I'll be sniping at $2000.00, which should cover most bets.---I got to thinking, if I've got to go up there, I may as well look around and see what else I want.---It's like when I bend over to tie my shoe, I look around to see if there is anything else I can do or fix while I'm down there, cause it's just so darn hard to get back up again.
