Here is a benchtop Craftsman 100 Drill Press I picked up with a Vari-SLO attachment. :)
I'm working on the restoration of this fine machine now and will post pics as I work through it.

Here are some pics in the rough.

The motor is 1450 RPM which I think is a bit unique?

Great score, Brock! Wishing I could find a Vari-Slo for mine....Or even a Lo Speed. I'd like to get the rpm down for the larger bits.

Well Done.

Looks like you are well on your way, but if you hit a snag, check with FrankLee, he's done more than a couple of the CM DPs.

That is because it is 50 cycle rather than 60 cycle. Where are you located? Power in the USA is 60 cycles per minute.
... Must be a story behind that machine. :)

I didn't notice that on my motor! Thanks for calling that out. I think I am going to look for a 60 cycle on ebay or CL.

Nice drill press... I was looking for a bench top one myself, but couldn't pass up the floor model I found. I will watch the progression on this one!

Here's what I can tell you from my CM DP project. The original motor part number was 115.6962 and if you're looking on eBay or CL, be patient. A new one popped up on eBay with local pick up not far from me; a decent deal indeed. It dated from 1947! Don't overlook the fact that the motors were also used on other Craftsman tools, like band saws. Good luck!

I still have the head band and a few minor things to finish up.
But here it is. I struggled a bit with deciding on a color, but this burgandy red from Lowes turned out ok I think.

I don't plan to use the motor on it here, but I had to test it out with something while I rebuild the other motor. Veri-Slo works just as advertised.
I replaced bearings in everything but the vari-slo.

I sure nuff does! :lol_hitti

It is waiting for me to get my azz in gear and get it working and looking good again.

I'm out of excuses -- warm weather is here, I'm retired, honey-do-list is in good shape, last child is getting married in 2 weeks, ...... :D

:lol_hittiyeah, l am running out of excuses too for a lot of things.

I am pretty well retired too, well disability, I'm 59 though.
OH By the way, well, I should post it in Garage sale 2015 too,
But CT scan and CEA blood test at morgantown came back normal, No signs of colon cancer, or The fancy word for cancer spreading to other organs, !!:rocker:All looks good, CEA was 4.2 , said It's normal.
Needs to be under 5.................:bowdown:well You Know,
So I am not dieing just yet, and will continue for my quest of quality tools, at a low cost.

Edit I am in the process of setting up a center jackshaft pulley on the 150, even though it has a tread mill motor at present. Thinking Higher HP with higher RPM, and Higher torque, more stable torque with lower "gearing" Via a center/jackshaft pulley.

Looks good! If that was #5, did you flip any? How many do you still have? Are you going to restore the cross-slide vise too?

I think the DP needs to match Big Blue.

I haven't flipped any yet. I'm a handle shy of a full drill press, which isn't much. (that sounds like a garage journal insult). I have 3 total in parts, but a couple of them aren't very usable for full restoration.
I think I am going to do one more restoration at least, and see what I can get for a fully reconditioned DP. Otherwise, I'll start parting out what I have.
That said, I don't know if I can ever resist a good 100/150 deal on CL. These things are too cool. :D

I am going to try and get that McElvy motor speed controller up and running for this one. It would have 5 belts then total.

I am also going to cut down one of my longer pipes so I can add the table lift. The column on this one is about 2 inches too short.
Then it will be the ultimate steampunk machine.

I am still debating the vise, whether to sell or keep, but I will restore it.

You find anything new lately Frank? I see some presses on CL here, but mostly uninteresting. No good attachments.

Nothing new since 5/22. With the warm weather, other projects, and less time, I stopped actively looking, but still passively keep my eyes open for something with features.
My most recent three are in various stages of clean-up. I've got a few parts and accessories to flip too.

I'm looking forward to seeing that McElvy cleaned and tuned up.

Any thoughts on cleaning up aluminum? I'm afraid something will crack taking it apart.

Is it possible that those aluminum parts are really cast pot-metal? They kinda resemble each other. Aluminum or pot-metal, I would use a solvent with tooth brush and fine steel wool... no wire brush or wire wheel. If you're concerned about taking it apart, don't. Clean it up as best you can assembled.
I recall a post -- long ago, in another galaxy far far away, .... someone from the Dark Side cautioning to change speeds on a Vari-Slo ONLY when the DP is ON.

If the lever is moved when the DP is OFF, the pot-metal parts won't survive.

:)

That's right. It's in the instructions.

Brock, looks good. One suggestion, purchase a cogged belt 3 inches shorter than the one you are using from motor to the next pulley. It will being the motor approx 1.5 inches closer to the body of the press, reducing the strain on the motor slide pins. Right now it's sticking out pretty far. Otherwise, cool!

I restored a 1946 100 about 2 months ago as well. I should start a thread and show it off.

You are right. I didn't mean for that to be the final setup. I have the motor / speed reduction contraption pictured above to finish up and it will go on this press.

Yes, you should absolutely show off your press. :)
