So, today I went to a local PS(Pawn Shop) thinking I would pick up some of my socket sizes that I don't have yet and came across a Sears Craftsman toolbox with a couple of wrenches and such in it. I asked the man behind the counter eating his lunch how much for the box and he said something about we sell out of it or you can buy the whole thing. I asked how much for it all he said USD$20. So USD$20 later this is my taking:

Thanks! The main reason I ended up buying it was for the wrenches and the 18" toolbox, I have 2 other carrying boxes, but ones a plastic Kobalt, and the other is just a cheapo Jobsmart one.

Welcome to the forum! Pretty good score! When you have some time you might think about maybe posting a few pictures in the 2015 Garage sale thread. It is a whole thread devoted to garage sale/pawnshop/craigslist/ ebay finds and yours would fit right in.

I'll get right on that! :D

Pawn shops are some of my best tool haunts! :D

Right! That's where most of my sockets/wrenches are from, given to me from my brother. They were mainly his dupes, but I'm not one to complain for free stuff!

I went into a pawn shop in Gardena, Ca looking for a pair of vernier calipers. I found a pair (Craftsman 6", Made in Germany), inside a Kennedy machinist box, with a Snap On F720 quick-release ratchet, some measuring blocks, tap handles, reamers, Allen keys, USA DOE wrenches (SAE) and some other things I can't recall. It used to belong to a machinist at Douglas Aircraft. (It had an ID plate riveted to the lid). Funny thing, though, the machinist couldn't figure out how to replace the lock, so he put a hasp on it with about 6 holes drilled in the box.

I was new to used tool buying. I was afraid I was overpaying.

$40 for the whole thing.

I am fairly new to used tool buying, but I have a brother who is basically a wizard at finding things(I.e. a 9-drawer Craftsman box with a bunch of Snap-On and Craftsman tools in it for $250) so I know what to look out for, but mainly I wanted the box and the wrenches. I also made sure I didn't talk to the manager guy because he seemed like the guy who would go through the box looking at everything for $$$.

Do you guys find the pawn shops to ask a high price and expect to be negotiated down? The shops around here seem to be high-priced for tools that look like they've been thru hell.

I don't have great luck with pawn shops. Most around here are over priced or just filled w/ junk. Went to one a few weeks back and asked where tools were, he pointed me to a locked glass case w/ a set of Pittsburgh wrenches, Craftsman sockets and a alleged SO hack saw. All priced higher then retail......and another pawn shop crossed off the list.

It depends. Since most of the local pawn shops know me as a "regular", I typically get wrenches for $1 and sockets for 50 cents. Get to know the people, don't haggle if you can help it, and over time you'll get good deals. At least that's been my experience.

My experience has been just the opposite. I typically haggle, because the price tags are often retail.

Are you saying I have over-payed? I feel like I got a pretty good deal on everything so far. The guy I got the Proto roll from was asking $10.

My brother and I are the same with the pawn shops around here, popping in about once a month, but with haggling always. That is usually, also, my price limit on things, with maybe a slight curve for sets/bigger sizes.

My experience has been just the opposite. I typically haggle, because the price tags are often retail.

Same, mate.

probably my best pawn shop score;

CP-734 1/2" impact, barely used
CP-722 3/8" butterfly, as new
Dotco 10L1200B 1/4" angle head grinder, barely used

$40 for all 3.......look up the price on the Dotco

Paid $2 for the S-O combo, and $1 for the S-O rat. Little cleaning, a rebuild kit, good as new.

Going to pawn shops and finding great deals on tools used to be one of my favorite hobbies. Unfortunately, most of the pawn shops in my area have closed, put out of biz by the "cash for car titles" places. The 5-6 pawn shops that remain either don't routinely have tools or have garbage tools at insane prices.

I used to get some AMAZING deals. Those were the days.

On one occasion in particular, I bought a whole box of tools, took out the stuff I wanted and pawned it at another shop across town for 5-10 more than I paid at the original shop.

Is this a great country or what?????

Same here most of the time, I pick out 1 female employee and go to her every time, and not the best looking one either, you got to remember the best looking ones get hit on all the time, the one's not so good looking don't so a little flirting and being super nice goes a long way, at one I go to as soon as I walk in she goes and checks in the back to see if any new tools are coming out that day, so I get first dibbs on them.
SO yes I'm a ***** for a good deal on tools. I may need help

YOU **** SIR,
That was a good deal.

The box I got today was a shocker. I like finding the stores that let you actually go behind the counter and check out all of the multitude of boxes, bags, etc. they have behind the counter because they usually have them labelled $20 a pop. And when I popped this one open and saw the 2 Snap-On ratchets I felt it was worth it as they sell by themselves for $30. Not that I am selling... although I do have quite the amount of wrenches though....

And awesome! I've never sucked before, but I guess there is a first for everything! xD:lol_hitti
