I fabricated a hybrid shaft for the P/S control valve I am using in my current garden tractor project.

I had this valve, which comes with a shaft that is meant to accept a u-joint yoke on the spline:

I need to mount a steering wheel on that shaft.
So, I acquired a steering wheel shaft from another tractor, and I cut the shafts of both:

I turned both ends in the lathe to face them off and bevel the outsides of the ends, and center-drilled them:

Pressed them together:

Welded the bevel all around, then turned and polished in the lathe:

Re-assembled, installed in dash tower of tractor to test-fit with the steering wheel:

Then I took it all back apart for painting of the pieces.

Very nice craftsmanship. Great job.

Loose Part in BMW Dash

Bought my e90 BMW about 4 years ago from a private party and it always had a rattle in the console when I drove over rough pavement. Was on my "to-do" list.

Today I decided to go inside the dash and see what was loose----turned out to be 27 cents in loose change inside the CD player! Very surprised it never blew out the electronics!

Worked on the Puma again. This time I was fighting electrical gremlins. The taillights and turn signals worked intermittently or not at all so I had to pull each socket and clean 30 years of corrosion off. I have them working at about 90% now but still have a ground issue because when the lights are on and the turn signal is activated it back feeds through all the other lights.:eyecrazy::eyecrazy:

Is it just me, or is every one of those ceiling titles sagging? Did they get hit with a lot of humidity?

They are sagging. I don;t know how old the building is. It's solid and only one little leak but as dirty as the window sills were I suspect it's been ignored for some time. New tiles are on the list:willy_nil

Continued stripping paint on the Spitfire. I'll be doing that for a while before I can start on the metal work. At least I'm making progress, and the metal showing up under the paint sure looks good. Gives me hope.

What product are you using to strip the paint?

I have a LBC project on the que that will need some of that. ;)

After pricing out a custom size picture frame and nearly having a heart attack, I decided to just make the frame. Getting the miters tight enough necessitated making a jig. Finished the jig today.

Started disasembly on a salvage mower my sister got me. Murray 22" with a briggs 550 series. Needs some love but after cleaning/diaphram and new blade it should be good to go.

Anyone have a link to repair manuals for briggs 550?

Looking good! What are you using to strip it with? I just took the front clip off of the Bronco and deciding to either sand it down or use something like aircraft stripper......

---all the paint removal questions, it looks most likely he used Aircraft remover.

Yesterday I put the final coat of paint on the back wall of the garage, moved a few items around. looks like I might finally get the work bench in place today.

Finished up my garage inventory this am by reviewing my inventory sheet to make sure I didn't forget anything (thanks to the person who posted about inventorying items for insurance purposes! in the forums). I then made a list of items I need to pick up today to continue my Bronco project. That is all so far today, I have to go to the VA to schedule my next neck surgery in a few hours so thats it for now. Hopefully after I get back I can do some more in the garage. Trying to get as far along as I can on this tear down before surgery lol.

Have a great day everyone!

I have two air line reels I want to mount to the truss's about center-line of garage. Rotated the arm so it pointed down, and mounting plate would mount on the side, but had to notch it with the plasma.

I rewired my scout groups outdoor camp lights, we have four small weatherproof fluorescent lights we use to light the big 9M x 4M tent we use as a kitchen/dining shelter from a generator and the wiring on them really wasn't safe for outdoor use. I bought some additional cable and wired them in two pairs with 5M of cable between each pair of lights, and used the cable from the extension cords they had been using to replace the short leads with proper outdoor weatherproof plugs on them, these then go into a three way splitter, the third socket on which is used to power a four way extension so we can plug stuff like phone chargers in should we need to. We then have a proper outdoor rated extension cord from that to the generator. Job done, way less chance of anyone getting electrocuted should the weather turn bad and any water get in.

Finished changing handlebars on my 15 road glide. I've got a peterbilt steering wheel that I want to hang in the garage , may do that today also . If I get real motivated I may touch up some paint in the house, that would make precious happy.

A friend took his 03 Vette to the local GM dealer to repair the ABS and traction control lights that came on and I was out of town. They charged him $100.00 to plug it in and determine the complete ABS unit was defective and handed him a $4300.00 estimate. He paid the 100 and called me. He parked it until I could check the codes. I took the module off and shipped it for rebuild and updates. 3 days later the lights are off and the total bill was $376.00. This guy is one happy camper.

I should of posted this in a WTF thread. Sad part is now the dealership will have to find someone else to pay their light bill.

Picked up my trailer frame from the powder coaters and started reassembly, had to pull it out and take some pictures in the sun. Can't wait to see the oak deck wood back in place, won't be able to start that project till I get back from North Carolina. Thanks for looking

Today I built two trailer harness adapters to use when I tow my little trailer with the ZTR between my house and my country property, or to tow the Mini Classic on the tow bar.

Our 2004 Audi uses the "Euro" style connector on the car end - as was the practice in 2004 it uses 13 pins which has to connect to the 4 pin US style harness on the trailer - they've since gone to a 12 pin which you can buy all over the net, but those won't work with my car - of course!. The last adapter I bought a few years ago seemed like it was the only one still in captivity anywhere in the world......and it was priced accordingly at over $100! But you can't tow without it so I bit the bullet and bought it. Last fall the damn ground pin broke off inside the trailer end of the connector and I could not figure out a way to fix it as that end is molded, you can't take it apart and you can't buy just the end.......or so I thought.

Here's that molded end.....

file.php

Here's the Audi end - it's actually a pretty slick design, as that outer ring rotates and locks it into the car.

Also, Euro cars have a separate turn signal lamp - US cars use one lamp for running lights and the other for brakes and turn signals. You need one of these nifty little electronic adaptors to get the two different styles to work with each other.

So.......

After a little sleuthing I found that the trailer end can be sourced here in the US from Hopkins, so I ordered one up. The next day while waiting for it to come in I found a slightly different version at the local Autozone, so I bought another - believe me there's a method to my madness.

I still had the Audi end of the original as the only thing that goes wrong with these things is the electronic bit dies. So, I now have one made up just like the original, and a second one that I can use when hauling Buzz behind the Audi.

I had to disassemble the 13 pin end and remove all the old wires to wire up the universal version, the OEM style I just cut and spliced the wires. I just tested both and they work! Now I have two complete adapters in case one fails......

file.php

Total out of pocket, about $30 and a few hour's work!

I call that a win!

Where do you send ABS modules to be "rebuilt and updated?"

I found a stash of things I had mostly forgotten about.
Plugged in this Emerson fan and it is quiet and works fine.
It was just one of those auction finds that got stashed away.

Also found today on a shelf:
Five gallon hand wrought copper pail.
Brass nos gasoline blow torch
Carbide helmet lamp.
A good can of Carbide.
A small and rare desk lamp smaller than the Emerson and marked for a/c use so it's pretty early. Back when Edison was still running DC.

That Emerson brass blade is nice! I have an Emerson Electric oscillator, too. It's proudly mounted on a ceiling joist in the harage and it circulates air quite nicely!

When I was a scout we used to still use Carbide lights when caving, worked great but I learnt not to stop too close to the guy in front when crawling through a tight tunnel, very easy to set fire to someones ****!
