I have an unimpressive Delta 1/5 6" horsepower bench grinder that I bought back in the days when I thought Delta was the bees nees.

I've been wanting a nice balanced grinder for a while, but GJ has ruined me with this COO snobbery. I'm looking at this Jet (another company I grew up thinking was great), 8" 1hp grinder that gets mixed reviews. The guy is willing to sell for $100 and he says it's made in Taiwan, not China. I won't be paying for/searching for a Baldor unless it falls into my lap, but the guy who owns it is an train mech, so I imagine when says it's nice and smooth, he knows somewhat. Thoughts?

This is the picture he sent me.

The Taiwanese grinders are a mixed bag. I have a Dayton 10" that is pretty nice, but I only paid $50 for it. I would not pay more than that for a Jet 8" even if it runs as smooth as he says. I would hold out longer for the right deal. If you were near Chicago, I'd sell you my 6" Baldor for less than that!

I have a much older version (dated 1983), works great... just took a little finesse to get the wheel to run balanced on it. IIRC I paid $80, not a great deal but I was needing a grinder.

I have that Taiwan 8" Jet grinder and it's excellent. I configured it for wire brushing which requires much more power then grinding. It's an honest 8 amp unit and performs very well.

A couple of years ago I bought the equipment & fixtures from a hydraulics repair shop. Included was a Jet drill press and a Jet 10" grinder. The PO had them since new. They were both made in Taiwan and excellent quality.

IMO: The price for the 8" grinder is a little high, but if you really need one now, I'd make an offer. They don't show up very often for sale.

We have a JET 8" at the shop, decent power and it's the quietest bench grinder I've ever been around :dunno:
