My Sparky friend who's an electrician for a large conglomerate brought this by and said try it for 3-4 years and if you don't like it bring it back. The equivalent of 350 watt metal halide(?) and draws 0.3 amps. I had to get in the air to see what sort of pattern it would throw.

That's what I was thinking... I'd know if I wanted to keep it after a couple days most. The problem I have with LED lights like that is shadowing. I tried a few individual high wattage(50w) LEDs over my work bench and it was awful, ended up selling them. They were bright as fvck but cast shadows and I couldn't deal with it. I'd like to try some long LED shop lights but scared they will be the same way, for now I'll stick with my old trusty T12s and deal with the current draw/electric bill being higher.

I suspect its the single point producing the light that creates the shadow, same way a single incandescent would. Your experiment should be interesting. I would like to think that a long LED shop light with many points of light over its length (like a tube fluorescent) will likely have less shadows.

Looking for a full report back!

Definitely the single point, even with three 120 degree leds about 4' over the 8' span the bench was well lit(more so than the dual bulb fluorescent) but cast shadows. I'd like to see the op shop lit up with just these high bay looking LEDs, get enough in there it may help but I still think there would be significant shadows. :dunno:

It will be above the lathe/mill area. There will also be six 4ft/6bulb T5 fixtures(High Bay-12 ft) and task lighting as needed to take care of the shadows. Space is approximately 28' X 31' so there should be enough light for these old eyes:thumbup:

These will probably be very similar to the Hubbell or Dialight offerings. I'd guess they'll retail well over $300-400 each. Tubes will probably still be a more realistic option.
