I saw this today:

And it got me thinking. The sound of a hand ratchet is so soothing. I think most GJ would agree, it's Zen-like at times.

But I've noticed that nearly every brand has its own signature sound, like the exhaust tone of different vehicles. So, which ratchet tone do you like most?

SK 45170. There are other ratchets I own that feel better in my hands but the SK just has that classic ratchet sound to it.

I agree. The dull micrometer sounds of just about any modern fine tooth just can't hang with the proud crisp clicks of a SK round head. Whenever you hear sound bites of ratchets or see them in movies that's the sound I hear.

My 90 tooth Carlyle is almost quiet.

However on reflection, I think I like the sound my 45 tooth Proto premium pear head ratchet makes best. It sounds like victory over automotive engineers.

SK 72 tooth 3/4 drive ratchet. Makes a nice clean, big, THUNK every new tooth engagement. Feels like I'm throwing a lever to save the world each time using it. Real workhorse of a ratchet!

ProTo 5450 24 tooth Pear Head long handle 1/2" drive.... When that clumsy old ****** says "click" , it is ready for a good pull... It is a reliable old relic that I enjoy using when I have the swing room..

An old mastercraft 58-9899-2, 50ish tooth 1/2 drive round head ratchet.

However least favourite would be much easier to answer: pro-point 144 tooth round head... Had to replace it, the sound bugged me so much.

My 3/4" SK ratchet sounds manly. I feel like a caveman swinging a Tyrannosaurus Rex thigh bone when i pick it up.

Well broken in Snap On 936 series. The dual 80s don't sound nearly as good.

Agreed! While I love my dual80s, and reach for them first...there's just something about the sound of my 936 that I love. Maybe because I was 20 years younger when I bought it! :lol_hitti

I'll probably catch flak for this, but .....

I like the sound of my 1960's Craftsman Teardrop ratchets. Even with a good cleaning and lube, they make a very satisfying clickity sound.

Another vote for the 45170. I got 3 45170's, a wayne 1/2 and a 1/4 round head but my favorite is the craft branded wayne style qc reject with a new rebuild kit in it and running marvel mystery oil, sounds great. The other 2 45150's are nice, one is near new with superlube, it is nice but the sound is not the same. I also like my gearwrench 84t with marvel in it and it sounds pretty good. For 1/4 drive I got a eastco rhft with marvel, sounds pretty good, also picked up a old proto pear head which is very satisfying, haven't got to cleaning yet.

There is a certain style Craftsman round head 1/4 drive from the 60s-70s that does it for me, early Snap On midgets and of course the snap sound and feel of the socket on the ratchet that Snap On is known for

I'm mildly autistic and these sounds are somewhat soothing to me and I could spend all night playing with ratchets and ranking them in order but I should stay out of that tempting rabbit hole
