I have gotten more selective about the clearance items I look up and then buy.

Especially when I can use a Lowes $10 off $50.

I found that Hitachi round head nailer kit with framing and finish nailers. It was way up in the rafters, but $100 plus at the time.

Went back recently and found it sold for $10. A little regret, but not much. I don't really need it.

The salespeople love it when you find clearance items and buy them. It's one more item off their list that they won't have to keep searching for.

Let me repeat that. You are moving discontinued stock for them! You are making room for mass quantities of new stock for them to sell.

Grizz, I find it really hard to read such a big paragraph without losing my place. Could you throw me a bone and press the ENTER key once in a while to put some white space in your post? Don't mean to be a complainer, but I've got bad eyes. Thanks.

Coralnut,

No problem. I had actually put some spaces in the original response I had prepared, but for reasons unknown I lost the text. Fortunately I had copied most of it prior to losing same, so all I did was paste it into the second response I initiated. Previewed post prior to sending - not sure what happened as spaces were visible. Guess the spaces between paragraphs did not permanently cross over from the paste. Will make it a little more short and sweet in the future. Really just wanted to get the info regarding the help I got from Customer Service out with respect to the corporate policy as it applied to penny items, but truly did not expect the large run-on paragraph.

Once again my apologies......

So HDRob starts a thread about how to find discounts at HD, and then his alter ego LP24 accuses folks of hacking HD computers to make things a penny, even though nothing of the sort was discussed?

Crazy.

Mods/admin can see your IP address, he was most likely a member with two accounts and they banned one/both accounts.

i've never understood the one person per IP address thing. the way IP addressing works, everyone located on the same network has their IP address changed by the router when the packets are routed off of their network to the outside world, so that their IP address is replaced by the external address of the router.

its called NAT, or network address translation. it's how the internet works. from wikipedia:
Network address translation (NAT) is a methodology of remapping one IP address space into another by modifying network address information in Internet Protocol (IP) datagram packet headers while they are in transit across a traffic routing device.[1] The technique was originally used for ease of rerouting traffic in IP networks without renumbering every host. It has become a popular and essential tool in conserving global address space allocations in face of IPv4 address exhaustion.
Network Address Translation effectively forces everyone on the network to have the same IP address when they're communicating with the outside world. Looking at the IP address is a very crude tool that often leads to drawing false conclusions about identity. It's not very reliable for identifying people, only places. Disallowing multiple users who are all behind the same router results in some bad outcomes:

-- if some home user creates an account, that means that his brother or his kid, or anyone who uses his internet connection can't have an account.

-- if somebody creates an account at work, that means that nobody else in the same place of business can have an account.

these kinds of policies get implemented by people who don't have a good understanding how the internet works. i doubt that it's their intent to ban two different people who happen to work in the same building, but that's what policies like that can end up doing.

And HomeDepotRob is banned..

I hope you reconsider. HomeDepotRob provided great input to these discussions. And personally, I thought the LP24 thing was entertaining. Anyone who took it seriously just didn't get it.

I didn't say it was right, just most likely what happened. Happens everywhere in a lot of circumstances, the innocent have to "pay" for the guilty actions.

Did you try multiple times? I was able to search by keywords today.

the network at most HDs is awful. If you got either no results or error contacting server just hit enter again (and again) until the search completes. Keyword search was working yesterday. Note that you can also enter partial skus to find similar skus - i think you need the first part and can leave off the end.

Yes, multiple accounts it looks like.

There's more than that to look for and can be spotted. I'll leave that right there.

It is against forum rules to have more than one account, getting caught will result in suspension of forum privileges. The majority of those that are banned, come back again and again. This leads me to believe that this forum is pretty damn good and they can't stand to be away from it or the banned members have no life. They may be around for awhile but most of them get caught sooner or later.

In other words, you're using javascript to scrape as much information as you can off of the user's computer. Email addresses, browser user agent profiles, OS version reports, MAC addresses off of the network cards... it's the standard fare. What you're doing is not rocket science. Today it seems that almost every site does this sort of surreptitious surveillance of their users, who are blissfully unaware of it. It's precisely why rule-abiding, privacy-conscious people need to use script blockers, configure the browser to feed disinformation to web sites, etc.

That sort of game takes two players. Everyone who plays it needs to get a life.

I feel like I've stumbled into some secret illuminati strategy meeting here... I'm watching the clock for when I can scramble out of work to the nearest HD. Even if I can't find anything it's like a new world is opened up of deals.

Do the penny items actually show as 1 cent in the 'Price Check' app or do they still show as something .02 or .03 in the app and then ring up as a penny when you scan them at the self-checkout register?

You won't find the penny items in the app. Just do a price check at SCO.
Some things do show up as a penny in the app, but it's mostly non-existent holiday decorations and bogus SKU numbers for all of their display models

Ok so I just read this whole thread and a good chunk of the HD deals thread. I went to home depot today and scouted the store for outward facing computers. There were none. Can I go up to any computer behind a counter and just get on (lol)? Also I keep seeing people say use the pro desk one... is that the desk over near the entrance to the lumber section where they rent tools and stuff?

Also pretty much every computer had a stationary monitor that would not swivel so you gotta go behind the counter.

Yes, that's the Pro Desk area. I ran into the same situation at the first Home Depot I went to. There were no computers facing out, and I can definitely can see how an employee might ask what the hell you're doing if you start typing away on one. Another HD actually had a computer set up in the front that was dedicated to customer use. I've also seen a computer turned out for customer use near the Pro Desk area of another HD. If you run into a situation where you don't see any computers that are clearly available for customer use, I'd just ask somebody up front if you can use one of the computers for the Price Check app. If they ask what you're looking for or want to look it up themselves, just say you have a list of stuff to check on. They won't wanna get ******* with something that'll take more than a minute or two.

May or may not help but for Canadian Home Depots the price check app doesn't show everything by keyword so bring skus. I also found it shows 0 inventory for non- stocked item like the 100$ single battery m18 drills in the display next to the computer I was on. The employee was quite adamant I stay on the webpages only but I showed him where the price check thing in in the public section of the screen, after that he told me the store number to put in and got me going. There where no deals showing for Milwaukee stuff but lots of 0$ items that said not inventory. It also shows some items Home Depot looks after for Milwaukee but others are controlled by the rep. It was in the last column on the screen. I'm assuming the rep controlled items can't be marked down by the tool manager alone.

Look all through the store. There's one in lighting in one my stores.

yea i found two stores with them

one store had no computer facing out anywhere, window/light section there was an employee at each one

asked the cashier in lumber and she goes "ummm noooooooo we don't sorry" with a bitchy tone like it was something absurd to even ask

Checked the local HD for computers, there are 16 terminals I could find in the store, none faced out to customers except in appliances and the tool section there are 3 standup terminals for workers that you can walk up to.

The tool one there are like 5 tool guys that patrol the area and don't let you use it as there is some kind of mobile pricing sticker printing cart docked to it.

The appliance ones both had been left logged into an employee only ordering page and are in plain view of the customer service desk so no monkeying around there.

Pro-desk has been the most helpful so far.
