McB: awesome restoration of a classic old Prentiss swivel jaw vise. i'm having to rebuild my deck because the damn 30 year wood is only lasting 30 years.

Outlaw: Holland's is one of my favorite basic vises. i won't ask if you got a great buy because i know you probably did and just say nice purchase.

CW: sweet old Holland's and another US made vise. have you British finally figured out that we American's made something worth buying?

Not had much chance to check it over yet but they do seem nicely made, I like the curved top to the slide as that's a bit different.

Any ideas on the age of the "keystone" logo'd vises?

DIF: You Americans have always made tools worth buying ... even if your vises have a totally different style to our English ones ;)

Interesting wood vice made by "The Oliver Machinery Company", it has no main screw and works by what appears to be a cam and a mechanism similar to those long pipe clamps.

Not tested how well it works yet as I need to get all the rust off so it has a chance of working. But it certainly eliminates the problem of the screw getting clogged with saw dust.

CW: it looks like you found that at the bottom of the ocean. it's a challenge saving some of these old vises and taking custody from a neglectful past parent.

PP: we were all just trying to help and happy to hear the 5198 made it to APE's door in good shape. i have a couple questions if you don't mind and PM me if you want to keep them private. how are you able to list both on Ebay and CL at the same time and if you sell via CL is there a listing fee for Ebay?

also what did it cost so ship the 5198 via UPS and is there a discount for shipping through EBay?

nice if you could me the 300 pound Craftsman made by i think Reed or might be Rock Island i'd be set. i'd drive to pick it up so you wouldn't have to ship it.

I can answer this and eBay's policies did change not too long ago, this information is current though. You can cancel all bids and close an auction any time you like, for instance if you decide to keep an item or have sold it elsewhere. You can do this once per year with no penalty. After you do it your first time for the year then fees will be charged every time thereafter. Whatever the last bid was is what fees will be assessed for. So, if it's up to $200 and you cancel it with no sale and your seller fee rate for that item was 10% then eBay will put a $20 debit on your account.

I took it to UPS it cost packaged 134.** With insurance And adult sig confirmation. There is a discount if I would have used them. I put it on cl so I could list pictures easier. And ended up putting them on GJ anyway as time went on. I was never going to sell it on CL unless I received a huge offer. That never happened. Only a few people wanting me to give it to them. If you pull the ebay listing before a bid it cost a dollar or so. If you get a bid it will cost what they would have got if it sold. I started at .99 so not much till many days later. I'm not sold on that all were trying to help. Some yes all????? If I were to put this in a box. At least the jaws would have a 2x in them. And screws would go through the boxes sides into the 2x to stabilize the vise in the box. Then the lid would go on.

Odd thing is it's a 2 1/2'' jaw, and a 1930 promotional ad for the Oswego NuTYPE vise says it comes in 3 sizes, 3 1/2'', 4 1/2'', and 5'' jaw width.---Evidently the 2 1/2'' is not only a oddity but a rarity.---Check out the link below.

va.gr, it's something I didn't know existed. I had to ask myself if somebody possibly cut down a 3.5" model at some time but cast, right into the side of it, is 2½P as a model number. Definitely the real deal. I've had some oddballs pass through my hands but this one might just be the most unique vise I've ever had on my work mat. It's really unusual looking in person, more so than the photos. For the first hour it felt like my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Balane: thanks for the heads up on the Ebay and Craig's advertising at the same time. since i don't usually sell on Ebay or buy anymore much i didn't know that was legal or how much the charges were.

also i agree with VA that your little multy swiveler is a cool little vise and if the buyer you end up with doesn't come through on the offer let me know what i can trade you for it.

PP: i know you pretty much come on GJ to get information and share very little of your wisdom. you sound like a smart guy with a little pep in his step so if you have any time to post sharing your wisdom and not asking us to appraise some gem you've found you might find out we are not a bad bunch.

again happy your 5198 found a good home and gave you some more picking or money to take your bride out a few times. also thanks for the heads up on the UPS pricing. i once shipped a 105 pound urethane dumbbell in an old tool box to Chicago and i think it was about that much and the box was a lot smaller.

just an FYI if you have a Fastenal store near you then you can bolt a huge vise or a crate onto a pallet and have them deliver across country. it might have only cost $100 to ship the 5198, but heavier items is where you save the money with them if you are not in a huge hurry.

Again please pop in and post more often than when you only find a rare vise.

Solid advice. I re-did another one for myself that I was creative with, but I don't want to take away from the originality either by doing a color that may put some buyers off.

I just did Autopts, I had to wire wheel the old red primer off, and I'l be be dipped, there is a large "63" where your "26" is...

So indexing number, or date, or is the 56 off to the side on yours the date? (mine doesn't have that...)

Looks good Outlaw, and looking forward to the resto pics :thumbup:. You know all too well what bench vise asking prices are on the SF Bay CL, so block sales are the best way to go around here....

Maclin has a Wilton 920 on a PowRArm starting at $ 199.00...

This is a two inch vise, and comes with extra jaws...

Maclin was the custodian of the "Great Colorado Vise Hoard"...

And the source of my Starrett 925...

Thrum: it's got enough good parts to be worth $10-30 if it's close by. i can't remember the numbering system for Parker, but thinking that might be a mid 1800's made vise.

Gore: I agree with Fretters and want to congratulate you on your new arrival. also get your easy chair ready with your laptop near so when you sing him/her to sleep you don't have to move them to make a few posts.

Oldie: Maclin does amazing work refinishing his vises and that baby with power arm looks great. ask him to post on here if he has time and i hope his wife is doing better.

My no 2 has a collar as well. Here is the collar from it. I haven't seen any parkers without a collar. Has anyone?

Thanks for the replies! Looks like this vise shoould have a collar. Well, i've sent an offer in, but I can't pickup until end July when I'm travelling by. If he does'nt bite i'll post it.
Update: sold..... The seller said it wasn't a weld, but sometimes tools get marked according to a tool guy he knows....mystery inside an enigma inside a conundrum! :headscrat

Does anyone has any catalog/ad info on RAE 200 series vises? I would definitely appreciate it. Edit: found it!

Picked up my first craftsman vise today. A 5162, rock island made. Excellent condition except the swivel handle needs a straightening job. It looks to have remnants of the original finish, a sky blue color and looks like it may have been repainted black or a very dark navy blue. Maybe the lighter blue was primer? Jaws couldn't look any better. Slide has no hammer marks on it.

JRobb: those Rock Island Craftsman vises are almost as nice as the 519x's which Rock Island could have made. very nice looking vise and might i recommend a nice cleaning and BLO bath.
