They had the buy 1 get 1 free on these for the past month. I got the email too this morning, but it's not like Lowes is going out of their way on this one. They basically just changed the wording on a deal they already had.

Tried ordering online and kept getting an error message so I called them and still had an issue with their system. I'm about an hour away from any Lowe's right now. Just is not worth the drive.

My lowes has a big Irwin display in the center of the store, nowhere near tools. They also didn't update the price, still showed $10 but rang in as $5

I refuse to buy a Newell Rubbermaid tool due to the fact that they basically shafted an entire town in Nebraska when they moved Irwin Vise Grip production to China. I generally don't have an issue with imported tools (especially if not imported from China) but it was a ****** thing they did. Just remember that when you pick up these $5 POS pliers on the 4th of July.

Many companies have indeed shifted overseas and many, think GearWrench and Tekton for example, have for the most part always ran their manufacturing from abroad. However, even corporations like Apex (owners of Armstrong, Crescent, Gearwrench) and Stanley/Black and Decker (Proto, MAC) while moving a lot of production overseas, still operate U.S. factories. Newell basically took the proud name of Vise Grip and sent it to China at the total expense of American workers. All the while still promoting VG as an iconic American brand. There's a huge difference (in my mind at least) in expanding production overseas or even starting your production overseas versus closing a U.S. facility then moving it abroad simply to make more $ off of an established name. All the while doing it quietly and charging the mostly unsuspecting public the same price as before. I realize that it's now a global economy and many imported tools are of stellar quality but in this instance, greed and deception alone were the driving factors. I, myself will buy Spanish, Tiawanese, Mexican, German, Japanese etc. branded tools at 3x the price before I'll ever pick up an Irwin Chinese tool again.

I just picked up 2 of the Vise Grips, and an American flag/pole/mount set for $5. Not a bad deal.

You just described every U.S. Auto company as well... You'll. never buy a Ford, GM or Chrysler again? Also, I don't think deception was a "driving factor."

The last that I checked, all of the big 3 were still building auto's in the U.S. as well as abroad. The closures of U.S. auto manufacturing facilities in the past were the result of poor management not identifying consumers needs/wants, declining quality and unsustainable business practices coupled with poor negotiations with UAW.I currently own two GM vehicles made in the States. My wife drives a 12' Buick Verano made in Orion Township, MI. and I drive a 14' Chevy Silverado made in Roanoke IN. So basically, no, I wasn't describing the U.S. auto industry and yes, I'll most likely buy another GM or Ford product again. And while "deception" may not have been a core issue in moving, NR certainly didn't mind leading the public to believe there was no difference after the fact. I'll concede that I may have misspoke in saying that.

I paid for 2 pair online right after this was first public late fri. Finay got around to picking up this evening only to be told that they were out of them. They made good by offering me 2 pair of the conventional type vise grip. Thinking I like that deal better anyway.

I refused to partake in this deal on principles as discussed above. I won't ever buy an Irwin foreign made vice-grips. I do have lots of Petersens though, which are favorites of mine. What Newell Rubbermaid did to Petersen Nebraska is horrible. If you've tried out newer Rubbermaid 18 gallon containers now also made in China by NR, the lids no longer snap on tight like they always used to. Junk. The China Irwin vice-grips are soft and don't have the life of the older US ones. - Paul

Yeah, but for $4.98 you can't go wrong. Look, I love American made tools which last a lifetime as much as anyone. Unfortunately, American made stuff is getting scarcer and when you do find it, it's more and more pricey. What's an average tool nut going to do? Go without tools or survive with what's readily available and affordable? I gotta go with "readily available and affordable." I admire your principles and understand your logic but at the end of the day, the rest of the world has already bought the China made vice grips.

Not saying others can't buy them Valentine, just that I won't is all, on principle. I can get used Petersens in pretty decent shape for $5 from garage sales around here - much better buys for the same cost. You do make a good point though that there are currently no US suppliers of locking pliers I know of. That market in the US is now gone, like so many others. - Paul
