Let's Talk Cords and Cables!

So I'm camping in Ludington, MI, and we went to the Restore.

Found 2 cables for $15 each.

One is a Hubbell 61CM08P 30A 50-feet Cordset 10Ga 3 conductor 125V.

This one is pretty faded, dirty and black spots all over it but good electrically. Will take some cleaning up, but never will be beautiful.

The other is a Marinco Yellow 30 Amp 125V Powercord Plus, 25 ft

Question............Useful around the shop for hooking up equipment and pluging in things?

Id say either would be good for a small mig welder or an electric jack hammer,Kind of big for general purpose stuff.

Both are excellent quality cords. Take the dirty one an coil it up in a bucket of hot water and lots of liquid Tide, leave the ends hanging out. In a day or two, put on some nitrile gloves and pull it thru some scotchbrite wetted with the bucket water. It will come quite clean. rinse off and dry.

The Marinco you might be able to sell for more than $15. They are intended for marine use.

Those are L5-30 ends, not really used for much else. Shore power cords, data center power. If you have a need for 120v @ 30A you could put a receptacle in. As reader said I would sell the Marinco and get what you want.

A former resident of the site also left behind about 20 feet of 10/3 SOOJ with 15A plugs on the ends. Weird!

I'm thinking that might be useful in the shop with different, 30A ends.

What say you all?

10/3 SOOJ is ALWAYS useful !

Those might sell in the right market, you would think Ludington would be it. Sell on the internet. Buy cords with common 15A ends. There isn't anything most people need them for and welders use a different end. Today most items run from 16, I used my 12 once in a decade during a real construction job with a long run. I got a couple 14, rarely use those.
A 10 with 15 ends would be good for small welders.

I always liked 12/3 SJO and Hubbell/Leviton/Lex-Loc plugs for power cables when I did sound and lighting. Also had some cables with stage pin or twistlock depending on the venue. Wrap them properly (over-under), secured with tie line, and hung nicely. Here was some of our inventory:

After a million years of doing it wrong, I find the over-under method very difficult. And yes, I have ruined some 100' 16 gauge cords doing it wrong !

Some times I just use whatever cord I have laying around. Lately I have been making my own "bread bag twist ties" out of stainless safety wire and shrink tube (yeah, total over kill, but I have both handy).

Some times I just use whatever cord I have laying around. Lately I have been making my own "bread bag twist ties" out of stainless safety wire and shrink tube (yeah, total over kill, but I have both handy).

Over under takes a while, but once it clicks you won't even notice. I cringe watching people wrap cords with their thumb and elbow.

I use velcro straps, we use them a lot for tieing data cables into tray at work, so I have lots kicking around.

OldWizard - what type of cords are you using.
If it's a SO variant, lie them out in the sun.....they usually will unkink itself due to the heat if they are not that badly coiled
