Vintage Battery Chargers

We have a Heyer 46A 6 & 12 volt charger and looking for information on them.
this one may have the dip stick mentioned in an other post here.
I have a number of old chargers and a old Tungar we updated the rectifier to solid state and use it a lot in reclaiming battery's. These are interesting machines and not to expensive to collect.
the ones with the Selenium rectifiers usually the rectifier goes bad and we replace them with solid state one with good success. Be very careful with the new smart chargers from China they are very dangerous . I know of one that almost burned the garage down and several others have problems , one friend had three new ones before he got one to work!!!

Well I guess nobody else has had any experience with a Heyer 46A battery charger. The dip stick function we had to by pass, We tested the dip stick unit that goes in the battery water and couldn't get it to function with heat or electronically.
We added a out boarded a solid state rectifier out of a truck alternator . This made it a wonderful battery charger as it brings the battery's up with out adding very much heat.
I think we will be using it as a equalizer charger to bring all the batters in the bank up to full even charge.
This charger has a heavy wound transformer in it with a lot of taps so you a good selection of voltages.
So if you see something at the flee market or in the dump it might be worth a look!!
I wouldn't trade this old charger for a truck load of those made in CHINA!

I have a 1957 Franklin Manufacturing 6/12 volt charger but some one spray painted it blue (not a very good job I may add) I want to try to get it restored but I can't find any pictures of what it looked like. I have some re-wiring to do but it did work. It was my Great Grand Father's.

I have a 6/12V charger from the late 50s. Works fine, but the timer is bad and the Amp gauge is also. Anyone know of a source for replacement parts? The ammeter is square, 3" or so. The timer could be a generic mechanical, turn to set type..

Timer is important, cause if you forget it you can boil a battery dry in a short while on the higher settings! This thing will put out about 18V on the highest, used for boost starts in the old days.

I have a 1912 or so 900 Sterling that looks to be a battery charger but on the tag it reads 900 Sterling Rectifier 6 volt 5 amps. dose any one have any information on this unit.

Have been a long-time lurker, but finally have a chance to contribute something. Ran across this cool old Heyer charger recently. On a two-wheeled cart with a big *** rectifier tube and screw-in glass fuses. Obviously not the original ammeter. Cracked and broken insulation on wiring so I haven't tested it, but a cool blast back into the past. I am wild guessing '20's era, but am certainly no expert. - Richard

I had to go out to the garage to see if I still have mine, and I do. Seems as though it was not really a happy camper last time I tried to use it; some sparking and buzzing as I recall; Still it was a good and faithful servant, so to speak, from when I bought it new probably in about 1965.
Can those things be fixed?

Hey all, joined this forum because i acquired this old Sun charger and i cant find anything online about it. Id love to get it up and going but i feel helpless with out a schematic. My dad told me it didnt work(thats all he said). the case was open when i found it and there are two ground wires loose in it. if any one knows anything any info would help. otherwise hey guys, heres a cool old charger!

What a collection of vintage battery chargers!!! I'll add an RCL charger to the collection.
I think it's from the '70's or '80's. I'm in the process restoring it and may have to replace the timer unit if I can find one.This is a 100A /6v, 60A /12v.
When I figure how to post photos, I' show some pics.

Probably one is a timer and the other is the charging current. See Heyer pictured in post 15. The ammeter looks very similar to the one on mine, but the name plate is totally different. Is there a plate on the back with model number and such?

Jeff, That looks very similar to my Heyer. Is there a data plate on the back?

For those wondering what the extra cable is with the 'dipstick'. It is to prevent from overcharging. I don't know if it was simply a cutoff based on temperature or cut back on the voltage or current proportionaly as temperature increased. Like some of you have discovered, when it stopped working repairmen would usually remove and bypass it. I saved the sensor and cord with the hope to experiment and reinstall one day but unfortunately it got lost. At least on mine, there is place to store the temperature sensor in the back.

The front of mine states its a "Safe-Fast Battery Charger with thermostat control" Model 175-P [?]. On the back data plate indicates it was made by Heyer Industries Inc, Bellville NJ and stamped Model 41A

Westinghouse Battery Charger

Last night I dropped into my folks place to borrow my dad's battery charger. Now I've seen this thing around our old garage when I lived at home for most of my life, used on many occasions throughout the years, so I just got used to how it looked. But last night after not seeing it for a while I took a good look at it and realised it's now a bit of a classic!

That Mercury with the full dash i think is my favorite.

I had a little portable that sat in a field till some guy sold it to me for $5. Despite having fires on both the AC and DC cables and still worked for many years, I think more than ten.

Found this on a back shelf at an estate sale, it works perfect.

I finally found a charger this past weekend, a project charger at that. It came from the dump so I didn't expect it to work. I think it looks awesome and I had every intention of ignoring the do not pick signs to get it even before I realized it was a snap on. It's a perfect match for my '58 kr352. It's an early 60s snap on mt631a chargematic. I haven't gotten a chance to go through it to see why it's not working. Are these very common or collectible ? I can't seem to find any info on it other than in the catalogs.
