Got a bit done on my 7.25" post vise today.
Here it is after getting the pivot bolt out. It took beating it with a sledgehammer it was so stuck in place.
uploadfromtaptalk1436751304482.jpg
And here it is after finally getting it apart. Took several weeks of soaking penetrant, and after getting the bolt out, I was finally able to beat it off with a 6# lead hammer. I'm there for a size comparison. Even without the screw assembly (probably at least 40 pounds) it's still far heavier than my morgan 160. The static jaw/post forging is heavier than my dad's new reed. I'd guess 80+ pounds. Once it has a handle on it, it's got to be over 200#. My plan is to eventually build a very overbuilt steel pedestal stand, and bolt it to the floor with hilti shell anchors. That will probably have to wait until I set up my own shop though, we just don't have the space.

Hmm appears to be another alien vise....
I might have to put it in quarantine so it doesn't infect my other vises until I'm sure its safe!

Wish I had the time and skills you guys have with restoring these old vises. Had to go with new iron for my main vise. Yost 865di.

Very nice reversible you have there. Did you happen to take a photo of the bottom side of the base? I would be interested in how they do there 360 these days.

I hope this comes out nice once I clean up the edges and paint the lettering black. I wish I had baking oven where I can hang a vise. Maybe I'll just let it sit in the 90 degree weather tomorrow so I can wrap this one up.

Should have the little wilton 744 done today. Couldn't find the color I originally intended to use, so I picked something else that looks pretty darn good! Just need to do the lettering and make a set of aluminum jaws, as it only came with one.
Actually quite a nice little vise!

My dad's you **** reed is coming along well too. I think he may be getting the vise bug! Apart from me polishing to handle, he's basically gotten it ready for paint since yesterday.

I posted a few pics of progress so far on the vise repair 101 thread, in case anyone is interested.

Is this supposed to say ATHOL MAF. CO or ATHOL M&F. CO ?
Is it CO or Co. ?
My handwriting ***** and this is not coming out too nice.
Man I hate Athols' casting, although their machining on the moving parts is amazing.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436795013.830832.jpg

I don't think I like the way I kept the side of the jaws unpainted on this vise. I'm going to respray that and the top and just keep about 1/2" unpainted.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436795068.457399.jpg

Also not to everyone, when you run out of good masking tape, don't try to use cheap stuff you have laying around. I ran out of the good blue tape and used some old white masking tape. Didn't work out too well. I have to redo the paint lines and respray the top.

Things like that are why I never try painting lettering. It has so much potential for looking off if the cast isn't brilliant.

Yea nowhere close to the lettering on my Reed. Oh well, I'm going to try to make it look ok at best to sell. I'll be out in the garage late tonight after work with a fine tip brush trying to make it look better.

Sorry I did not take any pictures of the bottom. This is my first "nice" vise and it certainly swivels and locks much better than any other vise I have used.

Posted on a Facebook group to which I belong - if anyone here needs this, let me know - I'll try to help.

NOS Record Vise rotating base.
$20
Anyone have a Record vise that needs a rotating base? This is a NOS base. The base casting has "OR 4" and the insert is "IR 4". You get everything in the photo except the ruler.
I don't know nuthin' about record vises, but maybe the number 4 means a 4" machinist vise?
Anyway, price is $20 including shipping to the lower 48 US states.

Merbie: York vices are some of nicest vices made on your side of the pond. Some of us believe that Wilton copied York's design for their famous and very well built bullet style vises.

any pictures of the York you are trying to buy?

Joe: Are all those Wilton bullets coming from a Fire Department or school auction. i used to buy bullets for $100 each from a guy that would buy up all the school auctions Wiltons that came out of the shop classes years ago. I didn't really care what he paid for them, but i think he said in the $5-15 each range and the ones i was buying were like new.

good luck on your sales so you get your vise funds back so you can keep up your buying a vise a day again.

Any of you guys heard of York vices? Iv been looking to purchase one of there vices

Merb

A fine vise, Made in the Czech republic last I knew. They pre date the Wilton. In fact the ol'boy that started Wilton stole the design from York or so York claims. The both were from the Czech republic and prior to WWll the founder of Wilton , being Jewish lit out for America with a York vise he had bought. This is the story I was told second hand from York. I have only seen one York but it was a fine vise. If you don't mind it being a non-US made product it will make a fine tool addition.

I've seen a York at joestriper's place and I'd trade my Wilton for a similar size York any day.

A good friend of mine who is the town welder here in Estes Park hits most of the garage sales in our small mountain town of 3000. He has been doing it for over 20 years. You just would not believe all the vises he has collected from this small town. Last weekend he picked up this gem and I have never seen one like it. This 3-1/2" Prentiss Swivel jaw is a old one. It has the only text casted in behind the swivel jaw. Nothing casted on the sides. The 3-1/2 is a 19 Prentiss on the newer models. Under the square slider is a couple areas stamped #93 and on the square slider there is also stamped #93. Guessing that it could mean 1893. A former member Catalyst a couple years ago said the #20 Prentiss Swivel jaw that I have is a old one with the text casted behind the swivel jaw just like the one picked up this weekend. Any one got a Prentiss like this one? Seen one before? Real clean vise my friend picked up. Gotta take a picture of his vise tree and share it.

Almost looks like a Morgan, or a Morgan looks like a Massey.

KMScott, I have a 4 inch version of your Prentiss. Been using it on my trailer hitch mount. Made a few knives with it over the winter (lots of clamping).

Edit: I had to make my pin as it was missing. Made from an iron workers bull pin.

Very nice, another old Prentiss. Look how thick the casted in jaw inserts are. I think these two vises are from the 1800's. Thanks for sharing Scooternut.

It is my understanding that those are the originals. Here is my Prentiss 20. First vise I ever picked up.

Re: Rock Island Automatic Vise

Cleaned and painted my very early Rock Island Automatic vise. Original paint was black, but I opted for a bit more color.

Look what just followed me home. If my schedule permits, I'll be bringing home the identical, fixed base brother home later this week with some other possible purchases, including my Wilton a friend is, you know, holding for me:bounce:
