Alright, you're right. I will look into trying to get down there this weekend if he still has it. That base is out of stock BTW.

Notice the offset jaw pins. Is that usual/unusual? Doesn't that make consideration for buying new jaws an issue (KMScott)?
.

Your jaws show grinder wear on the top of your jaws. Pin is centered in both directions. No issue at all. The only jaw that is not centered is on the 9400, some of those jaws are 15/16 (.937) tall instead of 1 inch. These 15/16 jaws are not rotatable. Did I invent a word...

If putting lip stick on a pig sells the pig for more money then lip stick it is. Those three vises could bag you a Reed if restored. I added a drawing of your jaws in case you want to fabricate them

KMScott -- Thanks for the drawing. I put the jaws back on and closed them which showed the dynamic jaw is not even and square with the stationary on one side. That's what makes the pins look misaligned. I can wiggle the dynamic a bit so I guess it's developed some slop along with the grinder wear.

Thanks again. Maybe I'll keep one just because. Great if I can fund another Reed with the other two. I'll think about the lipstick.

Swivelin' what?

Hey guys, I need your expert opinions. would you say this vise is worth 160.00 shipped? Its hard to see but its a parker 434 1/2. As you can see its missing the pipe jaws. I'm really going to rely on the seasoned pros here to tell me if its a good buy because with the research I have done I just don't know. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, guys.

You don't need, or even WANT, the pipe jaws on that vise. $160 SHIPPED is a bargain. It looks great!

160 is a good price. I would want the pipe jaws because of completeness but In reality they do get in the way.

TJ: that's even funnier if you think about the guy that said it (Kevin) and you that want it there in all your posts because i bet both of you will spend $5 to fix something to make it better when $1 would make it look the same.

2JZ: that Parker is a lot of vise for that much money especially since it is spiffed up pretty nicely, has the wrench, and shipping might be half that cost. only thing i see that doesn't look quite right is on the swivel nut on the side opposite the wrench, but i'd need a close up to say. it might be normal, but i'm not really an expert when it comes to Parker vises. they are great vises but i have to stop somewhere when buying these cool old tools and Parkers don't seem to be in the PNW much either.

This vise was given to me by a friend - a Reed 106 :rocker:
He didn't have room for it. Well, I have always room for a big vise.
Record No 4 for reference.

The main nut is rusted solid to the base. Soaked in penetrating oil, but no joy yet in removing it.

If I understand correctly, this type of pin (that locks the nut) was used before 1938.

At least three layers of paint...

Gert: nice looking big Reed 106 and happy to see another big US vise made it across the pond. some of those old rusted in pins can be a PIA (Pain in ### since you might not be familiar with the term). spray some penetrating oil on the pin and let it soak for a couple days then a hitting the pin with a punch a size or two smaller from below should just pop it out so you can remove and clean the vise nut and area it sits in.

anybody else do it differently do tell because this is a pretty common problem? also you could just leave the vise nut in place and put it in a Electrolysis tank.

nice vise and good attitude although you might need a bigger bench or attaching that bench to the wall now if Mr. Reed is to work there.

Finally here are pics of my new 7" Parker. Good shape except for the rear slide but it is fixable. Needs a handle.

2nd vise. Wilton C2. All fixed, just needed 2 new pins in the rear. I bet it is the only Wilton vise in the country with titanium pins! I need to buy a swivel base and I've gotta figure out the 3.5" *** cap.

That's looks like a Wilton. Would have a Wilton logo in the indented rectangle.

V_Twin: hammer it straight on a piece of RR tie because anvils should be for hot metal because they will chip. or if you or a friend has a press that is the easier method.

Joe: i like King crab almost better than lobster and don't get either very often unfortunately. oh an nice vise haul again.

BigEarn: i'm going to guess because I've certainly seen enough of these, but i'm not a fan of the smaller open screw vises so not sure. maybe 40-50 years old and a #644 since it has 4 inch jaws. that should get you close and just because it says Wilton on the side doesn't always mean big $ so worth for that vise is in the $40-50 range as is or maybe less if there are issues since it maybe hasn't seen any grease for the last 30 years.

Big Earn: BTW the Wilton vise you posted is a decent vise and should last another 50 or so years with some grease and didn't want you thinking i was saying it was POS. it's just not one of my favorite Wilton vises and they did and do make a few. yours was made in the USA so probably better than the vises they make today for under $120.

VA: i thought that was penicillin or was that for something else? are we talking a different vice again?

Outlaw: i have it on my list to get a measurement of the Reed 4C's swivel base and i'll do the best i can without taking it off because just moving that vise a few inches in my 85 degree shop has me sweating pretty good.

Drive, when you need penicillin, you got real problems.

Fretters, back in the day the Pharmacist new what I wanted when I hit the door.

In high school we were told to shave one side of our ******** and set the other side on fire, then stab the little buggers with an ice pic when they came running out.---That always seemed a little radical to me.:dunno:---Don't try this at home Joe.

Oh I'm sorry fellows, I forgot, this is the Vise thread not the Vice thread.

There, fixed it.

VA: i think I've been laughing for maybe close to an hour since i read your last post. Joe didn't comment on anything but one of your huge vises or maybe he meant his comment to cover both.

SO YOU SAY I HAD PROBLEMS. i had one shot and because i didn't want to take the test to see if i had anything because that was a helluva lot worse. now you say you shaved, set on fire and had an ice pick within inches of your Johnson and that wasn't just a one time thing? man o man i couldn't live like that, but i'm still laughing. sorry, but i can't stop.
