Mobil's mascot Pegasus dates back to the late 19th century and is one of the oldest marketing symbols still in use today. This is an early 1930's Mobil Pegasus Radiator Mascot that I have in my collection of hood ornaments. They were awarded to their leading salesmen in the 30's that they proudly displayed on their cars...

That is cool, I know a Mobil distributer that would love to have that. He has tons of Mobil stuff but I'll bet he doesn't have that. Awesome piece

I have been collecting all types of automobilia for a long while now. And there a ton of neat stuff around. But I’m particularly fond of Motoring Mascots that once graced the hood of cars.. Follow the link below and see a few more in my collection...

Steve

I prefer to own original rather than reproduction Mascots. And having them cast, polished and plated would be entirely too expensive as one-offs. But there are some companies that specialize in reproducing them. American Arrow Corporation owned and run by Donald Sommer, is the best of the best when it comes to reproduction mascots. His life's story is totally amazing. In his younger years, his job required him to travel. And he had the insight to go around to junkyards. And collected hood ornaments by the basket full. I believe that he has the largest collection of these priceless beauties in the world. Over 3,000!

Don has since made models from the originals and casts them out of stainless steel. The detail is totally amazing. And sells a number of reproduction hood ornaments. Though they cost between $350.00 to $900.00 each, it's far cheaper than if you made one off. Or a fraction of the cost of an original...

An interesting Website that has lots of information of Motoring Mascots from around the world...

A nice black one that my dad found for myself and little bro. Fabric, red Pegasus. Works well since we are all in trucking and our trucks haul Exxon/Mobil at times. No idea where he got them.:headscrat

I hear some older folks refer to it as the symbol for the Magnolia Petroleum Co. which was a subsidiary of Socony. Growing up in Dallas, I have heard a lot of older folks tell me how the flying pegasus was once the tallest point in Dallas for many miles and was the first thing you would see. Hard to believe now that the building is dwarfed by skyscrapers. Several years ago they took it down and completely restored it to its former glory.

AS you can see by my screen name, I make air fresheners. We make car logos, racing logos and some misc designs. I was pondering the idea of making old gas station designs. I thought about making vintage gas pump air freshenrs with all of the different logos. I would love some input on these ideas. I am not here to pitch anyone air fresheners, but I love suggestions.
Thanks
Carl

I think that would be a pretty cool idea. Way way better than a pine tree hanging from the rear view mirror.

I'll take five free samples thank you. :lol_hitti

Carl- I think that's a great idea to do vintage gas / oil logos. That would sure add to your "Vintage" catagory and go over great with us old car guys. I had never seen your site till today. I'm gonna pass it along to our Galaxie club. I think it would be great as a goodie bag stuffer at shows and meets, etc.
thanx, Phil

A bit off topic, but those old signs are awesome - especially the 'Flying A' one. Where did you get that one?

& where might a person find one for themselves?

The Flying A sign is an old original I bought on ebay a few years ago. Unfortunately, original Flying A stuff is really expensive, but there are companies out there who are reproducing some Flying A signs, but no one has any that big (6') yet(that I know of). The sign in the pic below (on the front of the building) is a repo from a place in California called Graphic express, or something like that. They have stuff on ebay from time to time.

I saw a 6' Flying A on eBay a few weeks back at a semi-decent price, but the guy wouldn't ship it. Common with these signs. I ended up finding my 6' Texaco locally - much easier.

That color is called Pegasus Red and it got me more women during my college days, to whit:

My dad was a maintenance supervisor in the Mobil refinery in Beaumont, TX for 34 years...it was one of the largest in the world until Exxon built their mega-refinery. The have a storage tank farm that goes as far as the eye can see, square miles of 300,000 to 400,000 barrel storage tanks, and the red Pegasus is prominantly emblazened on the side of every one of them, about 20 foot tall. If you saw the movie "Urban Cowboy" then you are familiar with the landscape I'm describing.
Mobil makes paint in this plant as well, and they call that color Pegasus Red. I can remember several gallons of it in our toolroom at home, "borrowed" from Uncle Mobil.
Anyway, I quit a full swimming scholarship, attended the University of Texas, and not being one of the rich blue-bloods that inhabit its halls of learing, I had to drive my Dad's old work truck, an old, worn-out Ford Courier. Rightly so, he so much as disowned me after I turned my back on a free education, and I pretty much had to foot the bill myself. So I was happy to have the truck, ugly as it was. It had been driven into the refinery five days a week, had seen too many days of sandblasting, paint overspray, and constant driving through puddles of Lord-knows-what that collected in the plant potholes. I mean, when it was so used up and ugly that it could no longer be driven to the coal oil factory, then it was good enough for my son to drive to the University of Texas. This man would have made his own lightbulbs if he could. And this is the truck that I had to take my potential brides-to-be on dates in, my wingman from Hell. Once they saw what I was driving, that was the end of getting laid, much less a relationship. Raised during the depression, a truck was just transportation in his value system.
So one Suday afternoon my Junior summer, before taking a nap prior to have to go to work that night I made the comment to my Father that I couldn't get a date due to "that truck", and at least he could do was to help me out with getting it painted. His reply, "I'll see what I can do."
When I got ready to leave later that evening, he threw me his keys and said, "Here, take mine tonight...I don't think the paint is dry on the Courier yet." While I slept, he took a paintbrush and a can of Pegasus Red, and brushpainted the truck. I went to inspect it, and true to his word the paint wasn't dry yet. Probably took him at least five minutes to paint it, don't even think he washed it. He made sure one coat would be enough, time-management guru that he was, brushmarks in every direction, paint so thick it ran to the bottom of the body and dripped on the lawn... it forever had little red drops dried along the bottom of the body, icicle-like, frozen in time and dried just before they dripped.
That little red truck with the Pegasus Red drips frozen in time and the story behind it got me more ***** the next year than a college student needs. The girls thought it was cute as could be, with the line of drips from front to back. When I graduated and packed my stuff and left Austin, it all went in the back of that little truck.

GOD BLESS MY DAD, MOBIL, AND PEGASUS RED!

I inherited one of these Pegasus bonnet mascots from my Grandfather, who was a Fellow of the Motor Trade back when I was just a boy, growing up in the UK. I think it is an original, but it does not look chrome-plated and shiny, like the one in your picture. There are more details on it than shown in your picture, so I suppose if it were to be chrome plated, it would look newer and almost exactly like yours. What would it be worth if I were ever to sell it?

Mobil Oil was a worldwide company even in the very early years. Here's a photo of a Pam Clock from 1959, a shield from the US, a Mobiloel tank sign from Germany and a Mobil Dienst (service) sign from Germany.
I know I'm in the minority when it comes to "foreign" signs, but hey, they are a part of the history of a brand and have nice color and design.

I found this in a resturant we just reopened and we put it up on the wall. A customer once told me it was pretty valuable. Its about 8' wide and T58 on the bottom. Overall, I'd say it is in Good-Great condition. All the ones I've seen while researching it were left facing, while this one is the only right facing one I've seen. Any idea on its value?

Thanks in advance.

Just a piece of trivia. My unit in Viet Nam was 3rd BN 82nd Arty, Americal Division. The Battalion symbol was Pegasus. I remember (but no pictures) the red flying horse outside headquarters.
