I have a place near my job that fixes nail guns/compressors and sells roofing nails and other roofing things. I think I'm going to go there and see if they can hook me up with anything. I ended up buying the connector nails and I know they sell a lot of simpson connector plates so we shall see.

Speaking of pawn shops, just tried 3 of them in my town to buy the nails. 2 said no thanks, one led me on and on about how he was interested. He goes on telling me that he talked to his contractor buddy who buys them for $27 a box. I said I have them all on Craigslist at $20 a box, but would be willing to sell them at bulk cheaper at $10 each. He said he was interested in buying them all, and asked for a figure for all 200 boxes.

I replied "well 200 boxes at $10 each would be $2000, but I'll do $1500 if you want them all."

"No I can't do that"

"Well you said you wanted them all...how's $1000?"

"I think I'll pass"

Thanks for wasting 30 minutes of my life. I guess he was expecting $1 per box or something. I never did like pawn shops

Pawn shops feed off the poor and dumb, they pay next to nothing for what they have.

Yea I have never bought or sold anything at a pawn shop before. Actually, 2 months ago was the first time I ever stepped foot in a pawn shop. It was one that specializes in tools.

Everything looked heavily used and abused. The price tags on everything were ridiculous, nearly equivalent to the price of a brand new one. Needless to say, I didn't buy anything.

I was always under the impression that pawn shops didn't give a flying **** about their customers. From my (little) experience, I think I'm right.

The 28deg nails is by far what sold the most at the hardware store I worked at. Most were like $30+ a box. I can't imagine contractors wouldn't be interested. The 28 deg hitachi nails work with the Bostitch gun as well. We sold those too for a bit less than the branded nails.

Last year I needed a scroll saw to cut out a couple pinewood derby cars. Stopped by the pawn shop for the hell of it and seen they had a Delta scroll saw. I asked him whats his bottom price. He replied "cash price or warranty price?" Cash price was once it was out the door no turning back. I got it for $15 and its worked great.

I agree is crazy how many different kinds of nails there are.

Did anyone get any of the FN 15ga nails? Or the metal connector nails.

I found some 30deg. nails I don't have a use for. I would trade for nails I could use

The smart managers have learned that it's better to give away penny items to a customer, thereby creating goodwill and avoiding transactions that show up as black marks on their record during an audit.

Wouldn't this then show in the records as theft when the item is not in inventory and was never sold? That almost sounds worse.

From the customer's point of view, no receipt means there's no way to provide proof of purchase for a warranty claim.

He will probably go back and manipulate the inventory as if he trashed the items just like they do with most penny items.

Warranty claim in a $0.01 item? Not too concerned about it. I've bought 20 tough boxes up to this point. Which one was bought on which receipt? Hell if I know. But even if I hadn't bought a bunch of other ones, at $0.01, I would just trash the item of something goes wrong. I'm sure I would get my penny worth.

So if HD is not suppose to sell .01 items, why do I see photos on here of yellow stickers printed with .01 on them on the shelves in a store? Are they that stupid?

I think sometimes the MET or merchandisers are just in auto pilot or are distracted and don't pay attention to the $0.01 stickers that are printed from the printers on the carts they pull around.

I agree that if the item was only a penny, who cars if it breaks? However, there have been a number of penny items that have some value like the bluetooth lock set a few posts back or power tools. Sure they only cost a penny, but a replacement if it fails will cost much more.

On a power tool if you can't provide a receipt they will go by the date code on the tool, so your not out completely out of luck.

917666 was the SKU for DWS782. So yeah, you're right. Wonder if there's any difference between the 2 saws

I remember seeing some miter saws in the rafters the other day. I think this was the SKU. IIRC they weren't stacked with the other tools. Should have looked into it more. I will have to look next time I go.

That's how I got my Dewalt table saw, the first cashier stopped me when it rang up a penny. When she called up the head cashier he told me take it its yours, for free. I think they would have gotten in trouble if they had sold it for a penny, so the just gave it to me to avoid a transaction. As far as warranty I don'r worry about that since it was free.

I'm selling a lot of the Bostitch 28 degree nails on eBay, but everyone calling from Craigslist is asking for the 21 degree plastic strip nails. I'm not sure what the local building codes require around here. I did have a contractor buy some nailers off me a few days ago, and he seems to be using a combination of full head coil nails and clipped head wire-welds.

IIRC from my hardware store days, the 21deg plastic is for Porter Cable FR350. I know the last few years I worked there, we switched from the clipped head to the full head but I think that was just a matter of what the owner got a better deal on/what his contractors wanted.

"New" miter saw for sku 917-666:

Table saw SKU (136-489) still shows up as the DW745 on the website:

I need to go back to the store and look into this some more. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to see if there were some on the floor or if these were no home.

I think they are back for an upcoming sale in August. They have the red "special value" tag printed on the box, just like they did back around Black Friday.

So keep an eye out for the sale, and then if there are any left maybe we'll see them drop in price again. My local store currently has 3 miter saws and maybe 1 or 2 of the table saws.

Tool hunter card revoked!

I go to my local stores at least once a week (therapeutic, I call it) during my lunch break from work. Mostly just to get away from work, but also to see what I can see deal-wise.

Stumbled on a few Dyson vacuums last week. But the stores are now doing inventory so I expect most of the goodies to disappear for now.

What have you guys found to be the best day?

Actually my penny deal finds have always occurred on a weekend. Which is great because its a lot easier to get thru self checkout when its busy and the one person at the kiosk is working with other people getting them checked out thru SCO.

Non-penny deals there has never really been a pattern. The Dysons I found were just random days last week.

The saws I bought back in Jan/Feb were in overhead for a while so there was no rush...I waited until I had people that would pay me for them before I bothered purchasing them from the stores.

I was just curious if there was a certain day they put clearance stuff out, like Mondays to begin the week or what.

I've spoken to several employees about this. They all tell you something different.
I'm sure most of the "experienced employees" aren't going to tell you the truth anyway, since letting that info out will cut down on their own deals

Anyone have any experience with collated screw guns? I've been eyeing the Ridgid, but don't know if it's actually worth the money to me. I have a few boxes of collated screws.

I don't exactly find using a conventional drill and screws to be difficult, so trying to find some kind of justification for buying this thing.

HD doesn't really seem to have a "schedule" for clearance stuff. If you're doing your due diligence and searching overhead, you'll find the deals. Their top stock is all open unlike Lowes that has blocked off some of their top stock and they can "hide the deals."

I don't think I could warrant it unless I installed drywall or decking for a living. For the little bit I do, conventional drill works just fine.

They are great for screwing down plywood roof sheathing and subfloors, and maybe wall sheathing and drywall if you can comfortably hold the unit horizontally. Otherwise I cant see any reason to have one if you don't use it frequently.
