Hello, my name is Todd and welcome to Ernie’s Place. First, I’ll address the: “why is it called Ernie’s Place?” question up front. Ernest (known as “Porky” by most of his family and friends) was born 1920, WWII veteran, father of three daughters, grandfather of four boys, one of which happens to be me. He was a welder by trade who worked for a company that repaired hydraulic cylinders, suspension systems, pumps and motors for local mines. He tinkered as a hobby, fixing and building things in his spare time. His workshop started out as a simple concrete slab he poured on the side of his house, several wood benches to work on, all shaded by those green fiberglass roofing panels attached to a wrought iron framework he put together. This served him well for many years until, with help of family and friends, he built himself a real cinder-block workshop. At the age of 62 cancer took my grandpa, leaving behind a host of friends and family that remembers him as a good, honest, and caring man who loved his family and left a positive impression on those he met. It’s taken me these 30 years now to realize just how much of an influence he has had on my life, even though I only knew him for a short 12. So I suppose this is a dedication of sorts, I’d like to think a little part of my grandpa goes into every project I work on.

Anyhow…my garage journey began with my first house and the garage was used for simple vehicle parking and misc. storage. This was until ’06 when I bought my Hummer and started tinkering. Fast forward several years and a few vehicles/toys later and I started feeling a bit claustrophobic. I got the itch to do a complete restoration and found a 1964 Scout to suit this purpose. After completely tearing it apart and doing some repairs I really had it with the limited space. The Hummer took up literally half the garage space and moving all the vehicles around to get any kind of space was tiresome. The house didn’t have an RV gate and a pretty small yard. My spare parts collection was growing and was tired of being within spitting distance of our neighbors. Thus we (the wife and I) started our search for a new place. After a lengthy search for something we both wanted (big kitchen for her, nice shop for me) we finally found it. 2 acres at the western edge of Phoenix, the place has been foreclosed and vacant for almost 2 years. It needed a lot of work but we got it for a good price. Oh yeah, not only does it have a decent-sized garage… it has a detached shop, too! It may not be the Concrete Underground or the Big Party Barn, but it certainly is my own little slice of heaven. I’d like to think that if Grandpa was around he’d get a kick out of the place and might even hang out and do some tinkering with me.

Here come the pics…

The old house - Working on big stuff meant moving vehicles around:

Here’s how much room I had on either side of the house, most of it taken up by my collection of “stuff”
IMG_1545.jpg

Now onto the new shop, as it was when we acquired it. 30 x 50, three man-sized doors, three small windows, RV-sized roll-up door, skylights, etc.

North side of the shop

South side. Before the place was foreclosed the previous owners cut out every single gate on the property and sold ‘em off.
IMG_0400_zps0d10dfac.jpg

Inside of the shop from the front. The room off to the right was used by the previous owners as a dog rescue pen. They cut a really crappy door in the south wall to let them out and used the area south of the shop as a dog run.
IMG_0386_zps28c285e4.jpg

Heavy duty shelving bolted to the wall. Tons of storage!
IMG_0387_zps862f2a43.jpg

These stairs by the front door lead up to more storage. The room below is a bathroom.

My upstairs fortress of solitude, man-cave, what have you…most recently utilized for a cat-rescue room. Smelled like it, too.

Here’s the bathroom in a lovely shade of green…

It’s been just over a year since we moved in and it’s been a lot of projects and a lot of work but certainly worth it. Still a few more major things to go before I get to really play in the shop and finish off that Scout. :) More pics to come as time permits….

Nice place to start with, so many possibilities. I really like the upstairs club house. Hard to tell from the pics, but with all the stairs and rooms how much actual open floor space do you still have? One project vehicle worth, three finished?

Thank you for the positive comments!

Yes, those stairs do get in the way. They are both actually made to raise up out of the way. The one by the front door to the storage folds up, too. I’ve already rigged up a couple pulleys and tucked it into the opening. Made a huge difference not having to duck every time you come through the door!

The stairs leading up to the Cave were modified at some point to be more permanent. Metal railing was added and bolted to the floor and up top at the wall. Future plans include setting up a lift system of sorts to raise/lower as needed. All in all with the way it was received I’d say there’s room for at least two major car projects going on at any one time. I could probably park three vehicles in there without much difficulty. A lot has changed since then, though….

Since you mentioned the upstairs area…lets continue with that. As previously noted it was a cat rescue room (jail?) for a while and wasn’t too pretty. There was that thin industrial type carpet down and a decent amount of kitty litter piled up in the corners. That had to go. Part of moving into the house involved tearing out and replacing 1500 square feet of tile and completely re-painting the interior, so I had a bunch of leftover tile, backer-board, and paint. Might as well put it to good use!

Started with ripping out the carpet and padding, this stuff was nasty with cat waste.

Back wall after carpet removed and cleaned up a bit

Front wall with a window that overlooks the shop

A couple coats of light grey on the walls and backer-board down and ready for tile.

Fast forward through installation of tile and baseboards (also leftovers from house renovations), add a hand-me-down lazyboy chair (thanks mom), a $25 Goodwill leather couch the wife found for me, and a cheap carpet and it’s downright comfy. Oh, the fridge was also a freebie from a buddy of mine. A year or two ago my mother-in-law gave us a small square of 1" thick marble and I held onto it for some reason, only to figure it out now. Some angle iron, square tubing, and shocks I pulled off of that old scout gets you one small but heavy-duty coffee table/footrest.

Oh yeah, here’s what’s hangin’ on the other wall…

The skylight was providing a lot of glare on the TV, so I took some ½” angle iron and made a couple of rails for a piece of sheet metal to slide on. Those handles are exhaust clamps salvaged from the Scout. ;-) This gives me the option of leaving it open and lit, or sliding it closed whenever I want to relax and watch a movie. With it closed it really does feel like you're in a Cave.

About the only thing I really want to do up there is add a small 5.1 sound system, but for now the tiny TV speakers will do.

Super building. Actually a dream building. And it looks like it is getting a great renovation.
I will be very interested in seeing how it all comes together. You have SPACE!!! That's a great thing to have.

Welcome and Thanks for Posting

One of the first things done in the shop was unloading and unpacking all the stuff from the old house. It’s amazing how much stuff you can accumulate in the nooks and crannies after a decade or so. Costco had those black and yellow totes on sale so I stocked up and transferred a lot of the house stuff and a good quantity of car parts, too.

Also used a couple of Gorilla racks for spare materials
IMG_20140709_175331794_zpsdd2f45f2.jpg

And yes, the shop offers plenty of space indeed. But as much as there is, I didn’t like how much square footage that room in the corner occupies and I really couldn’t justify a good use for it. Plus that’s right about where I’d like to put in a 2-post lift. ;-)

So out it goes. Before pic:

Left with a pile of lumber and a bunch of sheeting material. I left some of the 2 x 6’s bolted to the wall in case I want to hang signs or other misc. items in the future.
IMG_20140319_173036394_zpsb60a22be.jpg

I had so much extra lumber left over I figured I’d put it to use and threw together this bin of sorts to contain it and other misc. materials. I also built in a small bench seat, may as well make it multi-purpose.

Hey Todd. Looks like Ernie's place is coming along quite well. What a difference removing that room made. I'm on the west side of Phx also, but I suspect you are closer to the White Tanks.

Big difference indeed. I’ve already filled the space, but more on that later…
And yes, the White Tanks are practically in my front yard. I love it out here.

Nice space, more pics of the H1!

Well…if you insist. :)

Wow the Hummer is awesome. Here in Spain we don´t see a lot of them. A neighbour bought a H2 but sold it because of the fuel consumption. Very good looking that shop.

Hey Todd. The Hummer pictures are awesome! We almost purchased a Beazer home, north of Northern, west of the 303. Ended up deciding travel and vehicle upkeep to our work locations was going to be too far in the long run. Ended up in the Camelback &
107th area and have been happy with that decision. Pm me if you want come by some time. Later, Jeff

Again, thanks for the positive vibes!

Been a busy week, unfortunately not much done in the shop. Used some of the tools from the shop, though. The Mrs. discovered pallet furniture on that Pinterest site. My cousin works at a place that installs counter tops (granite, marble, corian, etc) and they just throw their pallets away. So we brought a load or two home. They have some of those long ones for the counter-top material that worked out nice.

Couch, love-seat, and coffee table. Still need the cushions.
IMG_20140714_165832398_zpsb4735d5b.jpg

Still need to throw together an end-table and drop some tile on top of that and the coffee table.
IMG_20140717_195012684_zps12d8485a.jpg

Anyways back to the shop...After getting some-what established in the house and shop my folks stopped by for a visit and my mom brought me a gift. It was the sign that used to hang from my grandpa's shop and she had inherited it when he passed. I'm not much of an emotional man, but this damn near brought me to tears.

Here's what's going on under the upstairs Cave area. I know there's a division between those who love and hate pegboard, but I find it useful for my needs.

My humble weld bench/work table. Currently the only workbench I have.
IMG_20140712_183057234_zps3e9dc621.jpg

I plan on making a couple heavy-duty tables along this wall. Both metal, one standard table and maybe another smaller one for clamping down welding projects.
IMG_20140712_183107261_zps564c7cd8.jpg

My toolboxes. I've been very fortunate with these. The small Kennedy was given to me by a supervisor at my old job. I was his second-in-command and he called me one day to let me know he's not coming in to work...ever again. Oh, and I can have his toolbox because he's literally never coming back. The larger box was a freebie from a good friend of mine, fellow Hummer-owner that moved cross-country. I helped him do some work on his rig and pack up some of his stuff and he suprise-gifted it to me.

Shop is going well, thanks for asking and apologies for delayed response - I’ve been pretty busy. Having such open space is fantastic. I love being able to spread out and work on multiple projects if need be.

To continue – I got a great deal on this fire cabinet to store the flammables:

Picked up this restored drill press from Craigslist and my mom got the metal lamp from a yard sale:
IMG_20140802_113346467_zps81bb8de5.jpg

OK, now onto some projects….for my birthday the wife got me a swamp cooler for the shop. 6500 CFM should move a little air around in there.
IMG_20140802_113116852_zps6d9ee6ec.jpg

I removed the window from the side of the shop and built this stand for it:
IMG_20140823_082113303_zpsbe7b8dd6.jpg

Also had to run a new power line to that side of the shop. While I was at it, installed another outlet for the welder on that side of the shop as well.

The neighbor had some problems with their riding lawn mower, the shifter linkage broke and came free so did a little weld repair. Always happy to help them out, they are good folks.

The next project (which I’m still working on) is upgrading the shop bathroom. The sink and toilet work just fine and it’s plumbed for a shower but no shower tub/enclosure is there. I still had a bunch of tile left over from the house so figured might as well use it here, too. After a bunch of reading I decided to go with the Schluter Kerdi system over the traditional mud pan and liner. To start with I pulled out the sink and toilet and discovered why the toilet didn’t feel to stable…the screws into the slab holding the flange down had all but come loose and/or broke free. So that’s something to address later on down the road. I talked to a tile guy that knew a bit about the Schluter system and he advised replacing the drywall since it’s been painted once or twice.

Here’s the “before” shots:

Drywall in the corners removed and glad I did. Turns out there was a slow leak in one of the copper lines. Not only that the valve itself was slightly wet to the touch. One more thing to replace, one more thing to learn how to do.

Got a nice stainless sink to replace the old plastic one. Cut some small wood blocks and spaced them out 1/8 out from the wall. The bent flanges on the back of the sink slide down over the blocks and makes for a nice tight fit. The sink doesn't move at all.

Made a set of gates to separate the back yard from the side of the shop:
Side%20Gate_zpsdvx0jbf6.jpg

The need to spray for weeds on a large scale prompted me to make a mini flat bed trailer to pull behind the John Deere. Left-over gate material plus a trailer axle that had a bearing failure were re-purposed for this project.

Axle cut and welded back together:

Have had a few occasions where the weld cart wasn't quite mobile enough. Rolling through dirt and such outside the shop isn't ideal for those small-ish casters. So thought I'd give this a try.

Craigslist old metal dolly, new solid-core tires, and some metal scraps:

Seems to be working out OK so far.

Another friend brought over his '66 Bronco. Swamp cooling is super-nice when it's 110 out. Parked right in front of the cooler while doing some front-end work to the motor.

Finished (well, not so much in this pic) one of the two sets of front gates. Currently working on the second set now

Feel free to copy away. I’ve certainly borrowed my fair share of ideas and am happy and thankful to be able to contribute!

My parents bought a 1965 Airstream and have brought it over a couple times to work on it. On an earlier visit they were looking for a way to get the spare trailer tire out of the bed of the truck, so I made this for them:
IMG_20140531_2_zpsiqkva4is.jpg

IMG_20140531_1_zpsb2k86rar.jpg

The next visit my mom wanted to re-seal some of the seams on the as they are getting a leak from somewhere. Scraping, cleaning, and caulking is much nicer in a cooled shop instead of in the baking sun when it’s 110 out. They also bought a couple new propane tanks to be installed as the old ones were getting up there in years. The tank hold-down set-up was really rickety, so I thought I would address that for them, too. They were having some difficulties with the A-frame jack, too - so as a surprise I purchased one of those electric ones and installed it as well.

Old tanks and jack removed
IMG_20150722_1_zpsizyh1wdd.jpg

Kind of hard to tell from the finished picture, but here’s my concept model, the stuff I'm adding is in blue

Hopefully I can squeeze in some time this week/weekend to make progress on the gates for the front yard…

Wow, lots of progress at Ernies place Todd. Looks great. How do you like your X series mower? We bought a D140 last year and should have spent the extra for the X.

Wow! A lot of positive responses, thank you very much!

How do you like your X series mower?

It’s been great so far, have just added gas and done the recommended maintenance. Spent more than we had intended, but the Kawasaki motor and good reviews sold me. Doesn’t hurt that the dealer is pretty close by, too.

Admittedly I don't have a trailering background and haven't looked closely at any rigs on the road with the tanks on the front.... but should there maybe be a little shielding for the tanks against road debris thrown at them by the tow vehicle?

Propane tanks are pretty robust and the valves are fairly well protected, but I think the smart move is to cover them, yes. Those plastic dual propane tank holders are pretty common, but my mom is very handy with a sewing machine and plans on making her own custom cover out of some heavy-duty material of sorts. Should be plenty of protection from small rocks/debris and the hot Arizona sun.

Nice rig! I love those FJ’s and wouldn’t mind having one, but the last time I checked the price on even a basket case was crazy expensive. My buddy can’t even get gas without someone stopping him and asking how much he’d sell it for.
