My Saw Exploded.

Craftsman and sears are giving me a hard time they keep redirecting me all over the place after my craftsman compound miter saw exploded. The laser guide is what caused it, the guide flew apart and and the two pieces it split into got flung in between the blade and the blade guard causing the metal upper and plastic lower blade guard to explode into pieces, and parts of the guards were thrown across my garage, and one piece of the plastic lower blade guard cut into the 2" PVC pipe I was about to cut, but before the blade even touched the pipe it exploded. I need help getting a hold of someone who will make this right. I could have been seriously injured or killed, it catastrophically failed.

That is an extremely serious failure. Take tons of pictures and document everything, then proceed slowly. If it turns out to be a faulty design and is the same on other saws then it is only a matter of time before someone takes notice. I'd be persistent but also take your time (it might take a while to get to a person who is at a level to understand how serious this could be from a safety / liability).

I wouldnt only seek out a new saw/refund, but something else too. That is a serious safety issue, given it couldve caused a serious injury. I am glad you are OK.

i would start sending emails and pictures to any sears corporate email address i could find.. just write one email, and copy and paste it to every other address you could find , along with a link to this thread, maybe even a youtube video. id explain in the email what happened, and how your not even being offered a refund/replacement at the local store. that might be interesting.. i would think it would be in their best intrest to give you what you wanted, and just get that saw back, and away from you.

i have removed the saftey guard off the miter saws and table saws i own. i seriously believe they are there to protect the company more than the user..

I hope the blade is certified to cut pcv pipe. Pretty scary situation.

The saw exploded before the blade even touched the pipe. a plastic piece of the lower blade guard did the cutting of the pipe, I cut that piece out of the pipe with a manual hacksaw, because I needed the pipe to make a raceway for computers cables so they are all nice and neat and out of the way.

Wow...you're lucky. Make sure you keep the saw and all the parts.

Look up sears executive customer service and email them. Last time I had a major problem with sears, a single email (and a follow up phone call) was all it took to solve it.

Wow, that had to be scary as hell. Sure hope you had eye protection on !!

Couple weeks ago I was making some tough angled cuts of 2'x4's on my cheap Ryobi miter saw that I had jig clamped onto saw. Can't imagine saw exploding when other clutter like clamps are there on the table.

Got into habit of wearing clear eye protection glasses when using nail gun, so I've kept them on while running miter saw. Guess that might be good habit !! ;)

Good luck OP on getting Sears to step up.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has a online form to report product failures.

You might want to mention that along with the names and dates of your interactions with Sears employees when you send that email off to the Sears headquarters.

Glad to hear you didn't get injured.

OK, glad you didn't get hurt.

Now, what specifically have you done so far. Who have you talked to and what did they say?

Finally, what is it you want?...a new saw?, or something more?

This is definitely a group of tool experts but if you joined to get legal or customer relations advice, you need to know that as a whole we **** at that.

Please tell everyone you know about this thread because I need to know the contact info of someone that will make my situation right.

No offense friend, but I'm not going to do that. You have the same internet we all do.

Yeah I need as much input as possible, to see if anyone happens to already know an email at sears holdings or sears roebuck or at the craftsman division, and this is actually my first day here so I dont know anyone here. :/

Can you tell me what that email is, the sears holdings website has a phone number but no email. I would like to get it to them ASAP because sears and craftsman kept transferring me in circles and asking if I have a repair agreement, or if its under warranty still, the model number is 315.212500 I dont remember when I bought it but regardless that should never happen. that saw was well taken care of it was not beat up or nothing.

My glasses' lenses are polycarb but I am wearing a full face shield from now on.

Mine blew apart about 10 years ago. Brand new and on the second cut on a 2x4. Found pieces stuck in the wall 20 feet away. I wasn't scared at first, but sad. I had saved for over a year to buy it and now it was a pile of broken pieces. When I saw the damage to my shield, then I got scared. I had on safety glasses, but also a full face shield. The shield had several deep gouges in it that would have been my face if I had just work glasses.

I called the local Sears and they replaced it with no question. The new one has been doing fine for 10+ years now.

Yes, This isn't the first one of these saws flying apart in our GJ community.. That report sounds like a good idea.. Especially after having a runaround with Sears; which I would definitely mention.

Of you want people to see your post, you can reach out on the craftsman Facebook page. If you make it public, they will contact you quickly to resolve the issue.

Glad you are OK. The 315 prefix indicates Ryobi is the manufacturer.

+2

This needs to be reported beyond just a complaint to Sears. Facebook is another good idea.

(struggling to resist comment on PVC pipe)

But seriously, glad you're ok. That looks scary as heck.

Am I missing something about cutting PVC pipe?

Well, two things. The "right" answer would be that cutting pipe on a chop saw is risky if the pipe isn't clamped down, because it likes to spin and grab in the blade. The "risque" snarky answer would be to question if said pipe contained pressurized air...

Thanks for the good answer. After reading this thread, and it was on my list anyways to get, I bought a nice face shield. I wanted it for running the grinders.

Was cutting a notch in pvc pipe with a radial arm saw years ago. First couple cuts ok then pipe spun into blade and exploded. Violent explosion.

I don't think sears is going to do a whole lot. That saw is out of warranty and I don't think you should have been cutting PVC with that configuration

The blade did not even touch the pipe at all, the laser guide flew apart into two pieces that is what caused it to explode and I did have it clamped down. a piece of the lower guard made a large cut I found the piece and it lined up perfectly with the slanted and curved cut in the pipe. this had nothing to do with me, it was a defect in the laser guide that caused the explosion.
