I gave the lathe a lil lift to get the chip pan out. I figure after 54 years it deserves a fresh coat of Massey Ferguson Gray. That chip pan weighs ~75 lbs by itself, gotta love how these old machines were built.

Swapped wheels on the ATV after I did one of my tires in yesterday. Nearly 300 km ride, and got the flat 30km from home. Tires are from 2007 with 6000 km on them, so I squeezed every last mile out of them I think.

Did the water test, leaking at the base of the lugs.

Have new Kenda Bear Claws on now.

Started making this go from black to white. It will be the new pantry cabinet in the screen room, and SWMBO wants to be able to see if there is a spider inside...

Two of the large cans of Rustoleum, and I think its going to need 4 more to complete including shelves...

I make lightweight parts for my 1970 Dart, by taking factory parts and removing "unnecessary" material from them. Nothing weighs less than a hole. But the trick is to make them appear like "factory". I will only cut something up if I have an unmolested part to replace it. My friends think it's nuts, but lighter parts are like free horsepower, and I can afford free.

Last week I picked up a mint glove box door and hinge assembly. Today, they started their weight loss surgery. I will probably be able to remove about 50% of the weight from those parts. Have Dremel, will travel....Faster!:lol_hitti

This a car you race? I've seen a kid strip his Honda of all the extra weight he could to make it faster for the same reason .... side impact beams, bumper supports, carpeting, sound deadening, all kinds of heavy stuff. Turned a nice car into a death trap ... as it was his daily driver.

No matter ... be careful.

I haven't removed any structural parts of the car. Just lightening up bolt on parts, that aren't integral to the safety or performance. Next year, it is getting a 10 point roll bar. It is a street/strip car.

Garage weekend. 1st up was a cambelt replacement on my girlfriend's car. Not sure why it broke as it had only done 80K km since the last change & everything else looked ok.

rP1040919_zpsef9ov72z.jpg

First time I've done a cambelt on a front wheel drive, wasn't as bad as I thought. Only had to make one 'special tool' to get the job done.

Next up was the fun stuff, making a twin bike rack with interchangeable mounting brackets to suit either the swing away tyre carrier on the back of my landcruiser, or a std towbar mount for the car. This is the landcruiser attachment:

rP1040920_zps0e6dz6vb.jpg

On top of this will bolt an aluminium frame that the bikes go on. That's almost all cut out & ready to weld now too.

Cheers
Clint

I realized once again how primitive my carpentry skills are. After the 4th time of measuring and assembilng the same simple shelf unit, however, I think I'm getting better. LOL. At least I can laugh at myself:)

I am in the same boat! I can tear down a vehicle completely and do a full restoration (including tearing down alternators/starters/ carbs etc...) without issues but my carpentry skills ****! I can build a box and put together kits but the rest I **** at.... But at least we can laugh at ourselves :rocker:

Today I had planned on reassembling the Bronco's engine and putting it on the frame BUT I went out to the garage and I found mouse tracks all over my intake and valvecovers that I had just painted. So today I redid them.... I then locked them up in the spray booth/area I built so no mouseable encounters tonight lol

Today, I took apart my HF auto-darkening welding helmet.
It has failed to darken a few times lately, and because it is about six years old, I assume the batteries are dead.

So I dis-assembled it:

Removed the button batteries and soldered in wires in their place:

And re-assembled, with the new battery wires ready to add external battery holders:

I need to go get a couple of 2xAAA battery holders at RadioShack so I can re-power the helmet.

Seems like a lot of trouble if the original batteries lasted six years. While the aaa cells probably have 3 or 4 times the mah I'm not so sure they will have similar self discharge rates to a lithium button cell.

Maybe I'm missing something?

Was getting some leaks fixed on a clients 1975 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 on Saturday when my son pulled back to the shop with his hydroboost ******* power steering fluid out of it on his Duramax.

Spent the afternoon yesterday replacing his hydroboost unit and while we were there he opted to replace the brake master cylinder. Ready to run again and a happy son again.

Now tonight maybe I can get some more work done on the Landcruiser project and bring some money in rather than spending it.

Z, do you have multiple sons with Duramax's, or are all of these woes born by the same truck?

Seems like every 2nd or 3rd post is you fixing something with a Duramax.

Nope, one son with a new to him D-Max. To be fair, many posts are about mods he is doing to it.

For the most part the truck is in good shape considering it just turned over 230k miles and he bought it right.

I am not sure what you are suggesting as an alternative?

It IS a pain in the **** to open it up, and I'd prefer not to have to do so again. Thus the external battery holders will be installed.

Replacing the lithium buttons was not an option, as they had solder-on tabs that could not be de-soldered from the PCB without damaging the board, thus rendering them irreplaceable. By cutting them off, and leaving a small metal tang from the battery tabs to solder a wire onto, I gave myself a method of re-powering them.

Mike.

My wife would love for me to have a new lifted Duramax & I would love to oblige her, but there's no way I'm dropping $70k on a truck especially when mine is paid for.

My only options would be for an '07 or so with 150,000 miles on it. After watching what my dad has been through with his '03 & accepting I'd never utilize it for anything other than a mall crawler, I've decided I'm going to keep my daily, much to the wife's chagrin.

Mrs. Spent had sinus surgery Thursday, so I stayed home with her. In between seeing to her, I managed to spend some time in the garage.

Friday I rebuilt all the spindles under my mower.
IMG_20150731_113427863_HDR_zpssnzbihli.jpg

Saturday morning I gave the wife's car a much needed bath. I got the grass cut & the new bearings did the trick to quiet everything down.

I honed the 5.3, got it cleaned up, oiled down, and bagged on the engine stand.
IMG_20150725_144413211_HDR_zpsiogwjq0m.jpg

I then decided I was going to clean up some of the rust that keeps falling from the legs of my hoist when I fold them up. I didn't realize one of the pins was not installed in a leg, so when I tipped it over to get the rust out, the unsecured leg fell.... on my face.

IMG_20150731_181416873_HDR_zpsksnnyqz7.jpg

I wanted to wash it out with some peroxide & tape it shut, but Mrs. Spent insisted that I needed stitches. ER doc agreed so I left with 5.

Gave the daily a much needed scrubbing & cleaned up tools Sunday.

I have had my 06 CCSB D-Max for a little over 6 years now. I have a 6" RCD lift on it running 36" tires. I have done some other mods to it as well and it just turned over 85k miles. My wife loves it and in my mind it will be the last truck I ever buy but who knows. For now I love it and I paid cash for it when I purchased it, I wouldn't have borrowed for it.

My son just purchased his 2002 ECSB with 222k miles on it in September as a non-running truck. He got a very good deal on it and it was fairly inexpensive to get running again. He had planned on getting one when he graduated college and after buying a home but when the deal came along he jumped at it. He was a little bummed when the hydroboost was leaking on Saturday, but I tried to explain that with that many miles on it there were going to be a few things will come up and not to get too upset over them. It is still a great truck and he is into it at a great price point. He would have to caugh up almost $5k more than he is into it if he were to try and replace it with a running truck of equal shape.

Nice looking vehicles you have. How do you like the Acura?

Mike.

Thanks. Bought both used with good histories & I try to keep them clean.

It's actually an '08 Infiniti Fx35. We looked at all kinds, including the Acura MDX & Rdx. The RDX was just too small & the MDX was significantly more expensive than the Fx35. The wife liked the dash/controls better in the Acura, but they were Fwd or Awd whereas the Infiniti's are all Rwd or Awd.

She absolutely loves it though. We picked it up with ~60k on it a few years ago. I recently put brakes on it & flushed the transmission fluid around 100k. Other than that, I've only changed the oil & replaced a TPMS sensor.

I wanted to put a set of wheels on it, lower it, get it tuned, & upgrade the sound system. The wife likes it the way it is, so I'm glad she's happy. I just have to keep in mind that it's her car & she's happy with it so long as I keep her hands-free interface / cradle up to date with her phone.

Awesome. Thanks. Sorry, I thought it was an Acura.

Nothing wrong with buying used vehicles, I have never owned a new one myself. I always buy used, complete service and then maintain as per manufacturers recommendations. I can't stomach the initial depreciation. I am glad that there are people that will ONLY buy new though, as if it were not for them, there would be no good used ones for guys like us.:dunno:

Cleaned up and polished a flea market find from yesterday for a Disston 10" torpedo level.

Will post pictures later..

I was just trying to understand your reason for the external battery mod. Makes sense to me after reading what you wrote above.

Finished up the engine on the Bronco today. Tomorrow I will put the engine and drivetrain back on the frame and fire the engine up. Then make and install all the new fuel and brake lines. Still waiting on the body mount bushings, so I will do a little work on the body before putting it back on the frame. Fun times and enjoying not being rushed and doing it on my schedule lol.

Replacing wheel bearing in the Cayman, installed new adjustable Bosch ABS system, added a 75 amp relay and shut off switch for the radiator fans, cleaned on some rims. Getting ready for our race at Mid-Ohio next week.

No worries. Admittedly, vehicles are beginning to look a lot alike now days. I've never purchased a new vehicle either, & doubt I ever will.

I'll tell you what though, it's tough to find a used car/truck that someone has taken care of. I had my eye on my truck for a couple of years before I got it. A guy I worked with got it from the first owner, & he kept it immaculate. I told him if he ever got ready to sell it, I'd like to have first shot at it, so I got lucky there.

We spent 4 months looking for the Infiniti. We drove to Atlanta from Nashville looking at 30k - 60k mile cars & many were.... I hesitate to use 'trashed'... but they were definitely not well cared for. One with 40k miles was black with tan interior. The back passenger area looked like it had been steeped in coke & it looked like someone repeatedly set a car seat on the hood. If we had bought that one, I would have had to have had the hood painted.

The one we finally bought was less expensive than that one & had been a single owner trade in with complete service history.

Agreed. I was getting tired of looking at junk when we bought my wife her 2004 Altima in mid-2007 for the same reasons. Terms like "clean" and "excellent condition" or "meticulously maintained" definetely have a different meaning to some people than they do me. When we stumbled across her 2004 it had only 33k miles on it and was at the very top of our budget but I jumped at it because I didn't think it would last long compared to what we were seeing.

It has been an excellent commuter car for her and I have two people that have told me when I get ready to sell it that they want it. Although I know when it comes time to part with the money I am sure neither will be able to buy it. Lots of talkers out there anymore.
