Never owned one, Know many people that did. Met my future ex wife when she had a '76 with 400 and turbo 350.

My best friend since kindergarten, still owns a '71 455 HO 4-speed, blue with white interior . All original never hot rodded, always stored inside maybe 6ok on the odo. He bought it for $2700 way back in 1880 with 42K on the odo.

Not yet but I will have one. The smokey and the bandit Trans Am was "it" for me when I first got into cars. Have had the opportunity to buy a number of them in my younger years for what seemed like a lot of money back then. In comparison to today's prices on them, I should have bought them all! The 77-78 are by far my favorites.
Your '79 is no slouch though!

I never had a trans am, but had a '74 formula 400 that I dearly loved. Wish I kept that car, and the 69 Camaro RS w/ 427, and and...

I've got a '77 Special Edition T/A (or, if you insist, a Smokey/Bandit). Bought it in '79 from original owner and has been stored ever since. Will need a full restoration but it is all original except for the oil filter. Has 32k miles and is one of 2202 built with 4 speed and Hurst T-tops and has correct Pontiac engine. And of course, it is black and gold! Hope to work on it in about a year.

That sounds like a nice one. My '79 10th Anniversary is also a 400/4 speed....I spoke to the original owner and every owner it's ever had. I know it's complete history and have a 10" thick scrap book to prove it ;).

I have a '79 and an '80. The '80 is pictured, the '79 I don't have online. However, both are featured in "The History of the Firebird" by Marc Cranswick.

Mine are all stock. I even found some blank warranty booklets that came with the car new (I got lucky, found some in a junkyard that were never filled in) and sat down on a IBM Selectric and typed in the information---just as the dealer clerk would have done in 1979-1980 :).

I've never had one, and probably never will. But here's a story that should amuse you fans. Around 1980, when I was going to university (commuting on the bus and subway) there were a couple of 12 - 14 year old boys behind me on the bus. One asked the other, "What colour of Trans Am are you going to own when you grow up?" Not what kind of car, that was a given.

My '80 was my father's 15th wedding anniversary gift to my mother that year. My dad has been gone since 1988, so the car is a lifetime keeper for me...

When we got it, everyone was like WOW. That's the type of car a Pontiac Trans Am was back then!

BTW: My coworker rescued a "tuxedo cat" like the one you have in your profile. We named him Senor P for Senor ***** Cat. Poor little guy cried as we put him in a carrier to take him to a shelter.

not exactly on topic but......

Have never owned one but when I was a teenager in the 70s, I used to regularly walk by a Pontiac dealership and occasionally read window stickers and wonder if I'd ever have enough money to buy a car--any car.

Plus, why did GM kill Pontiac when at least they had some exciting products and a great history.

So that they could produce more Buicks to accomodate the aging car buying population ;).

It was part of the "giveback" that was put on the table when GM became Government Motors.

I'd love to to get a '77. Every once in a while I get the bug to check out various ways to build them up... suspension, engine mods, brakes...

But the Jeep thing has it's hooks in me pretty well...

The '79 400s are the most refined of the late 70's W72 cars. Best carburetion, exhaust, and overall setup---even though they are technically '78 W72 leftover engines.

As close as I can get, is the 1979 Z-28 I took to England in 1981...

The English loved it...

Except for the elderly gentleman, who wanted to know---"Who owns this ****** Angry Motorcar???....

The Z-28's handled a lot better than the TA's, due to the 200 pound lighter motors...

The WS6 outhandled the Z-28 AND it had four wheel disc brakes in '79. I've driven both---no comparison. The Trans Am is a class act hands down. Not the Camaro is bad, the T/A is sharper.
