So my auto darkening lens is about 15 yrs old and is acting up
doesnt want to transition back to light,Im sure its a dead battery
which cant be replaced.
This is a Swiss made one and has served me well
changes from 3-10 and is 2x4
Would be happy with one around the same, dont really need an adjustable
but it would be great to get one that starts a little lighter.
I want a good one so that I dont get flashed but dont want to break the bank either. I paid $150 for this one with helmet and it was pretty much cutting edge technology then. I see them from $15 -100 on amazon so its all over the place with pricing

just found the literature and it says battery life is 10 yrs so Ive been real lucky.
Last 5 yrs or so Ive kept it at a window that gets sunlight most of the day.

I don't know about yours, but I have read where some people have been able to open the sealed units and replace the battery. They either used a soldering iron or exacto knife to cut the edge of the plastic. You may want to google this.

I get mine off ebay for $20 bucks. They ship in from Hong Kong and work well

I got one from Hobart, it's pretty nice and was right at $100 as I recall. Autodark, adjustable, available cheater lenses at Northern Tool, replaceable batteries.

several years ago my AD lens stopped working
i found the original paperwork that came with the hood, (predicted) 10 year lifespan & warranty.
the hood was 11 years old

i shopped around at LWS stores for a replacement AD fixed shade.

i bit the bullet and bought a new miller prohobby AD variable for not much more than what a replacement lens cost....

I bought one from Harbor Freight in 2010, and welded miles of pipe fencing with it. The portable welder that was bought nearly the same time has 1300 hours on it. The helmet very likely used for 500-600 of those, and I used it a bunch indoors with a MIG.

It still works perfectly, on the original battery. It's only ever tried to flash me a few times, when welding through obstacles or when pointed at the sun. After 5 or 6 outside lenses, the inside is getting spattered up and a little hard to see through. Time for a new one, I definitely got my moneys worth the first time.

The HF one isn't too bad for fifty bucks for the DIYer.

The main issue I have with the cheaper autodarks is I can't see the puddle worth a **** through them. I have a really nice Jackson AD that I can see through but my main go to is a Fibremetal old school hood.

My Jackson has been acting up lately. I can't complain after 17 years. Used to weld for a living, then most everyday doing bodywork. Now that I'm wrenching maybe once a week I use the mig. Should I buy a replacement Jackson or just a cheapy?

my fibre metal insert got wet, so went to LWS to get a replacement.

only brand he stocks now ( 2x4 insert wise) is the Save Phace brand. Said Miller and ArcOne were coming back for warranty too often.

I was skeptical, but got one. Turned out to be very good for the $65 price.

used it alot and no problems so far. Pretty clear also.

marked 1/1/1/1

Autodarkening cartridges undergo evaluation in four important categories, all referring to optical clarity. Each category is graded on a scale of 1 to 3, with a score of 1 being the best (perfect) and a score of 3 being the worst. Increasingly, helmet manufacturers are developing products that pass all tests with the highest scores, yielding a 1/1/1/1 rating, the best available.
