Fretters: i think VA was talking about a different type of Glory than you are thinking. or at least i hope so, but that was a pretty descriptive joke he had a few weeks ago.

MBS: i'm liking the wood vise you made a lot. since you put metal plate on the sides do you set it in your big bench vise to do your wood work? did you make it out of your own design or from a kit?

CRS: i'm afraid before you can be officially welcomed to the group you'll have to post up a few pictures of your dozen vises which BTW is a good start. it's about how many i had when i joined this group and just letting you know that you might want to build a few stout shelves for the other vises that will follow you home now.

Hey thanks! The rear jaw is dynamic, the metal plates are "hooked" at the bottom, and that keeps the jaw from moving to and fro. You can't see it in the pic, but the base has a slot in it so the vise can be bolted down, but still slide forward if needed. It is not from a kit, but I did get the plans from a place in England. pm me if you want the website.

D- thanks, its a great lathe, even after so much time in service(1942), its still strong. Cant say that about too much, except oh yeah, vises.

Handle only... no signs of abuse. Nut is in great shape, even has the backlash adjustment screw, jaws too like new. Just some knuckle head drills the stops on each end of the handle rather than pinging them so maybe it was replaced rather than a factory screw up

Thanks for the semi-welcome, Drivesitfar. That shelf will have to be a little stouter after today. I was giving my newly permitted teen-aged son some drive time in the country and, at an otherwise unremarkable crossroad, we saw a wooden trailer loaded with stuff and a sign that read JUNK FOR SALE. Vise #13 is in the trunk now. It's a blacksmith vise. I don't know anything about it except that I have no conceivable use for it. I think that guy was the Devil. Pictures of vises will be posted in a day or two. I have to work out some technical issues first.

I found a 6" Chinese vise with a swivel base that is my new welding vise. I'd hate to use a Wilton Bullet, American Scale, or any other vintage vises for welding. Below is my new vise being set up to repair a smaller Chinese vise:

Let me guess, you don't use any of them. Lol I would say you collect them as well.

The saws are what got me into this in the first place. I decided one day that I wanted to learn how to sharpen saws and I thought I would get a beater or two at garage sales to learn on. To make a long and complicated story shorter, by the end of the first day I had a good start on a collection which included three saws that belonged to my other grandfather I had had hanging in the back of the garage for 20 years. They all turned out to be collectible Disstons. BTW I did learn to sharpen, but I don't like it.

Evening fellas picked up this little beauty today a Victor Jersey NO.772. 1 3/4" jaws pat date Jan 28,08. Ebay has a advertisement where it is listed for $1.25 in 1917. I have found some cool vises over the last couple years, but this one is definitely up there in my top 3. Wish it had the original mounting plates.

Attached are pictures of today's catch. This is a work station with a Parker 63 1/2 that still has the cut off tool, and an anvil made from a railroad rail. I really like the vise because of its art deco style and the anvil because it's small and has been cut for use.

It only weighs around 40#. I would never ask it to put on the clamping power that my Parker 205 can. However, If I use it as a clamping tool for my smaller welding repairs, It will more than pay for itself.

The Parker is a rare one with the cut off tool still attached. I passed on a Wilton Shop King last week because it was missing the cut off tool, and I would have to make one. I will enjoy restoring this one because of its style.

ALL: still haven't looked on CL for a vise (vice) so you guys are helping a lot. i also haven't eaten from a fast food type restaurant for maybe 2 weeks or bought any McD's sweet tea for $1. i'm almost thinking of painting a vise maybe ARREST ME RED because i have a bench clean again too.

i want to put in for a MINION now please.

Bagged: cutter or hardy and they are usually missing and probably in the same pile as the MIA pipe jaws in some barn near you and Joe.

MBS: i'll keep you in mind if i get time to build my own wood vise. again you did a great job with yours and i like all the little details you put on it to like the leather pads, badge, metal trim and so forth.

It is a before and after. That was a quick cleaning with a large brush. When I have time I will get in there with a smaller one. I couldn't see the name on it when I bought it for $5.

There is a Parker 63-1/2 missing the hardy around here for $10 I think. Too bad it's missing the hardy or I'd have bought it already.

Bagged: the hardy's can be made and are more for decoration. i think Balane makes some of his missing hardy/cutters out of a bolt, but you'll have to search this thread or ask him.

02: nice quick clean up
