Great work as always,

What the staining setup like for your cedar siding?

If you already explained this sorry,

This is what I did granted I only had 6 8' boards to due.

Lay out on saw horse give them first coat, wait 2 hours add 2 coat, then next day give them a third coat? That's what I did for my cedar boards that I used for my garage.
Of course that was what previous owner had told me they had done for the house and I wanted these to match up.

Sunshine most of the week so far.

I now have the siding, just ordered my 1'xs for my trim, and got the nails. :scared: $50 for a 10lb. box of #6 ring shank for the siding. All in all, I just dropped $5000 just to cover the outside of the garage. Still $2000 cheaper than the other lumber company I was also dealing with for the same siding, same thickness. Go figure :dunno:

So after mowing gets done today, the sawhorses get set up, and the rollers and pans come out to start staining. BTW.....Last year, I paid something like $125 for 5 gallons of Olympic stain. This year.....$166 for 5 gallons.

Now on the other hand, and sort of off thread, I called my propane company to ask if I could get a couple of newer tanks as the one I have looks ******. I have to piggy back my tanks for the heaters as I am too close to the property line for a 250 gallon tank, so I am piggy backing two 120's. ANYWAYS......I asked them what propane cost is at the moment. $.99/gallon. I have never seen it that cheap since we have lived here :rocker: So I need to hurry up and get the tanks, so I can get in before the price goes up any.

jim

I'm glad to hear that you think the lawn is nice. Momma has a different view on that  This lawn has been torn up almost every year for one thing or another. The last 5 years or so has been a mess because we filled in a 3/4 acre pond we had in the backyard. The pond was a real pain to maintain, so we filled in one end, a few years later filled in the other end, and two years ago, filled in the middle. Plus any other lawn demo that I have done here and there for one reason or another. Hopefully I can get the lawn in shape here before long and that will be the last of any muddy areas. If not, it may just be my *** in trouble by the boss :lol_hitti

As far as the curvy walks, I think it just adds a little bit of character. At first we weren't going to put in the amount of walks we have, then we decided to use the walks as a border for the flowerbeds. The previous owner had everything outlined with stones and the beds curved, so we decided to follow the curved theme with the walks. So far, everyone has liked them all for the fact that the walks go completely around the house. and some of the reason for doing that many walks was my parents. They were getting older and had a hard time walking in the uneven ground where the grass was. (they were in their upper 80's) I told the wife that we may make it to be that old someday, or if we ever sell, someone who would buy the place may have an elderly person in the family, or possibly someone handicapped, so it makes getting around the property a little easier. You never know. So that is some of the reasoning behind the amount of sidewalks. The little ones like it when they are here also to play on.

The downside of the walks...they take a few hours to clean. After a year or so of falling leaves, mold from being in the shade, birdshit....they tend to get stained, so I have to powerwash them all. I need to get one of the brushes that goes on a powerwasher and scrub them, but I don't have one yet. I may just pick one up this week though so I can get that job of cleaning them out of the way.

But thanks to all for the compliments. The wife and I have put quite a bit of work into this place, and it makes me feel proud when we get a compliment on the landscaping (her doings. I just get to do most of the labor)

Looking good !! Progress is "rolling coal" on the addition . .
. . . . just like the Hoopty can do !! :D

Curious about couple things . . .
a) Where will your electric and natural gas trenches (also any water ??) connect to the shop ??
You getting those right after siding so you fix the lawn ??

b) Don't see any vents in roof peak (ie turtle or whirly bird) . . do you have gables, soffit vents, ridge vents, or combo ??

EDIT: Think I see 3 turtle vents in post # 499 . . anything else ??

I am running propane out here in the country. The line only has to be buried about 6" underground and is buried along the foundation. It is 3/8" soft copper. That is what's on the house and currently on my garage. I am going to piggy back a second propane tank to run a secondary furnace in my addition. We cannot have a 250 gallon tank any closer than 10' away from a structure, but you can piggy back two 120's against the building. Figure that one out.

In the new addition I will have soffit vents and now have ridge vents. In the old part, I have soffit vents and four roof vents in back.

No pics today, but just an update......staining siding before it goes up, front and back. 56 pcs each of 8', 10', 12', 14', and 16'. So far I have all of the 1x4's for the trim, and 1x8's for the under porch boxed in area, and we just finished the 8' and 10' pieces. Starting on the 12 footers after lunch.

Good Lord, it doesn't look like much siding until you start staining, then it seems like it will never end. The reason for staining the back is to prevent the siding from cupping too bad. I never did it on the wifes building, but it makes sense, or at least I was told by the lumber company to do it. I'd like to get the 12's done this afternoon and at least a protion of the 14 footers started.

Fascia, "F" channel, and the cedar trim should start tomorrow (hopefully) Craig pulled Dan off of my job to work on a concrete pour for today. Not too happy about that, but I'll let this one slide. I want to have this wrapped up in a couple of weeks by September 1st if possible, so I can then concentrate on the inside, which I am going to hire an electrician to do. the electrician is semi-retired, and appreciates help, so I can go along and drill holes, mount boxes and such, and help pull wire. Should save me a few dollars.

I did get an estimate from an insulation company, and for doing everything including baffles is $1700. That is for R19 in the walls, and I believe he said R34 in the ceilings. I hardly can buy it and do it myself for much less.

Also garage doors might go in this week, but I'm thinking more like next week before they go in. Dirt just arrived for filling in around places and the sidewalks and flowerbed for momma. So thing are coming along. I'll try to get a couple of pics here later on today although it might be a pic of a pile of dirt, and a stack of cedar siding, but I know people like pics.

The back staining will help, a lot. We used 3/4 x 8 beveled lap cedar on our house when we built 18 years ago. We used Sherwin Williams, Woodscapes solid color latex stain. two coats all sides. We got about 10 years out of the finish till we had to stain again. The south, west and east are ready again. North side shows almost no wear.

the garage and sidewalks are looking great and happy the weather is maybe getting better.

if you need any help with the inversion table you can post on BCZ's thread and if i see it i'll be happy to help or you can PM or email me. i think you'll love it once you get it dialed in and used to hanging upside down.

cheers

Good to see you are doing good after your dental surgery.

Not bad, but just irritating. When they cut a patch out of the roof of your mouth, your tongue can't leave it alone:lol:

Drives......no real pics, but I have a large plastic sheet on the floor and a table with a roller, pan, and brush beside sets of sawhorses. We put the wood on the horses, stain them, then sit them outside in the sun to dry putting pieces of wood in between the layers of stained boards. Using a latex stain, it doesn't take long to dry at all. And the fact that I am going to stain the complete garage once all of the siding is on, just to make it look uniform and to give it a second coat.

Drives you should put them all around your yard and walk around as you stain each one set up in each corner stain one board walk to other corner stain another. Cross back to first stain. Etc etc.

You'll get a lot of exercise for your weight loss thread:thumbup:

+1 !

Even better, on **** joints, cut them on a 45° bevel and put colored caulk on the end before sliding them together.

with a piece of tar paper behind the joint going over the previous course.....belt and suspenders

Shoot, I'm too late with this tip, but will share it for others. I saw some Amish building a barn locally and they had a LOT of boards to stain. They rigged up two rollers such that a board would pass tightly between them on the flat. The rollers were somehow fed stain from the bucket below so that both sides of board were stained simultaneously by passing the board between the rollers. They had a second identical setup set for getting the edges of the boards. They were staining all four sides of each 16 footer in about 15 seconds. They did two passes for excellent coverage. 10 years later the barn still looks awesome.

Love the thread kevin!

How's the staining going ?

Slow. And I had to mow all day yesterday so w didn't get anything done. Today we are going to try and knock out some more boards. We have 14 footers and 16 footers left to stain. All in all, something like 112 boards left to stain. :( There is no fast way to do it. Ashton an I have roller pans, rollers and brushes. The backside of the boards go fast as they are smooth, but the front side that is rough soaks in more, and takes more time to get it to cover.

Are you attempting to do both sides at once while staining?

Are you going to do 2 coats ?

I'm doing both sides. We do the backside first, then flip the boards to do the front side. After staining, we are stacking them on sawhorses out in the sun to dry until we can bring them in and stack them on the "done" pile.

Wizard.......once all of the siding is on the garage, I will stain everything again using a brush. Currently we are using a roller to get the most of things. I'll use a brush for the second coat, and take my tie on things to insure good coverage. So far, I have used 12 gallons of stain and I still have a stack of 16 footers to go. I should have enough stain to do about 5 bundles of 16 footers which will be enough to get started with on hanging the siding.

The weather is calling for rain for the next four days, so if I have things stained, it will give me a good chance on getting some other work done that is needing done

What we have done so far, and what is left to go as far as staining.

And I found a spot for my Walk/Don't Walk post that has been laying around for a number of years. And yes, it still needs painting. I just stuck it up there to see what it looked like.

Kevin: Awesome idea to put a crosswalk steel post as one of the supports.

good luck on all the repetitive staining work, but i know you will love the results.

Rick....if you have a pic or two, please post it up on here, as I know there are others that would also be interested to seeing the difference, or non difference in looks.:beer:

Hey Kevin - I tracked down this pic of my old house with cedar siding. Sorry about the delay - I finally found it on an old computer.

Here's the old house with cedar siding and trim, with solid color stain (both siding and trim): [and no garage...]

Narragansett_zpsbrjxctlq.jpg

Here's the new house with Hardie plank siding and PVC trim, with latex paint:

IMG_20150104_113427_zpsa79801a0.jpg

The shade of green is different, but the siding looks identical beyond a distance of 6 feet. The Hardie plank has a rough grain texture that makes it look like cedar. The only differences you can see up close are the knots and splits in the cedar boards (15 years old in the first pic). With the cedar, we had to completely re-stain the entire house every 5 years.

With the Hardie plank, there's almost no maintenance. It's been 10 years already, and I'm guessing we won't re-paint for at least another 10 years. The planks are a little more expensive than cedar, but the savings in paint and labor is huge.

Your progress looks great so far -- I can't wait to see how good all that newly stained cedar looks on your addition. I'm hoping you have good weather all month.

I just looked up Urbana on the map -- I used to drive near your town all the time on my way to Dayton when I lived north of Toledo. But I'm guessing you're a Buckeyes fan... and I lived just over the state line in Maize and Blue country. Anyway, congrats on your team's success last season!

I'm sorry to hear that :lol_hitti

Anyways.....we started to put on some siding today after we got the morning stuff out of the road. (setting up the saws and such). So here is a wall and another you can't see around the corner. Plus we have a partial wall done on the bumpout which is not shown.

Re: Kevin54's....."The Addition"

Thanks Kevin - I think those are Christmas lights, so that photo must have been taken around January. My wife always wrapped them around the top railing and then down the two upright posts in the middle.

Believe it or not, those railings are galvanized pipe, about 1.5" diameter. I think the original owner did a pretty good job assembling them and giving the whole place a real "beachy" feel. The houses across the street were waterfront and we had a "winter view" of the Chesapeake Bay. It was a really small house, but we sure enjoyed living there for 10 years after we were newly married.
