Had to do work on my attic fan so I being the safe guy I am,,turned ALL the breakers in the box off. Replaced a fan capacitor , which fixed the fan problem...anyways,, turned all of them back on, but one kept switching off..finally it stayed on, later went off again. Now this has never happened. It's not overloaded, only a small window AC unit, lamp, and bathroom lights are on this breaker. So my question is, can this particular breaker switch be bad or weak? It only started this since I had turned it off to do AC work...thanks for the input in advance.

Yes breakers do go bad from time to time. Heat fatigues the metal parts used in the tripping mechanism. Depending on climate and panel location, corrosion can also come into play.

If it were mine I would kill power to the panel and check for loose connections at the breaker and device just to eliminate that as a possible problem. Maybe also pull the breaker and check the contacts on the back for arcing.

If there are no loose connections/arcing present replace the breaker.

Unplug the window ac before turning it back on.

Don't leave me wondering what is wrong with the BR. Are they known for trouble?

No, they are simply a lower quality line. Actually the quality is not lower, its about par with most other brands. The original C-H is HIGHER quality (the breakers with the pink handles). The BR line is the old Bryant breaker panel line, reincarnated under the CH/Eaton name. They are quite safe to use.

I think Norcal doesnt like BRs because theyre for aluminum bussed panels.

Eaton CH have copper buss bars...

I have had a intense dislike towards the BR line for the last 35 years back when they were Bryant, Div. of Westinghouse, only thing hated more back then was GTE/Sylvania. The reason for the dislike is something I would rather not go into.

What gets my goat is every supply house in town w/ the exception of one handles the BR ****, the sole holdout is SQ D, nobody carries Siemens, or GE, here anymore but not terribly fond of GE either.:D
