Picked up this Milwaukee 8" 3/4 hp yesterday ($50). Not really vintage catagory yet but a "classic quality" grinder. Almost identical to my Dayton. It's missing the tool rests so I'm on the lookout.

Try contacting Wissota. They still sell service parts for their old grinders.

Here is my latest garage sale find. I posted it there first, thought I'd move it here with some more info. It is a real nice smooth running grinder. I was asked to show a close up of the data plate and have included it. Anyone know if this grinder would have had cast end cover plates? They are both missing and I would like to find some. Any other info would be great!

This grinder probably didn't have outer guards originally or they were an optional accessory.

McB:i do like your Doerr grinder and i had a chipper made by them and it was a beast. can i ask you for more pictures of your awesome stand that looks like you can pull it out of your bench and put the grinder on the shelf and exchange with another grinder or tool?

WWII: thanks again for more great information

ALL: i picked up this old grinder which i think is a Craftsman, but I didn't get a chance to take good pictures before my bride kidnapped me. i'll get more pics later with the specs. i plugged it in and it runs great.

Post-WWII Craftsman 7"x1"x½" grinder with lamps built into the guards.

I'm going to post 2 old grinders on the same post because they are so small compared to the monsters I've seen posted here in the past.

1) Black & Decker 1/4 HP old on a homemade stand and runs like my 1/3 or 1/2 HP block grinders. any idea on the age? maybe 40's or 50's or??

2) Craftsman 1/3 HP missing eye shields, rests and water tray, but runs great. also sitting on a one piece cast iron stand and wondering what this stand had on it originally because it had a handle that is broken off on it? Craftsman grinder maybe a 1940's version??

The B&D Standard and Junior 6" grinders were from the 1940s & 50s.

The Craftsman is a Post-WWII 7"x1"x½" grinder.
The first generation model had ½"-24 threaded arbor ends.
The second generation model had ½"-20 threaded arbor ends.

I picked this up at an auction a couple of days ago. Not really sure I want to use it, but I guess it could be a nice setup with a variable speed motor.

Possibly an early Wissota, but not sure.
If this is a bronze bearing grinder, I'd get rid of the grease fittings and install spring loaded oiler caps. Sintered bronze bearings are not designed for grease lubrication.

ToolGuy,

You are solving all of the mysteries on this thread. Thanks for pitching in with great answers. Did you work in the industry? Or, are you an enthusiast? Or both?

I just picked up this Hallowell rolling cabinet and then mounted my 2 - 10" Delta Rockwell (made by Baldor) grinders. Ive restored one but not the other. Really works well.

Picked up two grinders today. Found both on local craigslist.

First is a 1940s craftsman 1/2HP. Model is S4150. It was $20.

As seen on CL
f384e95039c140ab860314940350bfbf.jpg

Mostly original. Missing one guard cover (and studs/nuts to attach) and left shield isn't original.

Vintage craftsman catalogs show it in late 30s / early 40s as PN 99 PTM 2609. Mine show PN S4150. Was $32.95 back then or over $500 in 2015 dollars.

During disassembly two bolts snapped while removing and had to be drilled out. This turned into an adventure as the drill bit snapped too and I had to work it out. Finally I got small drill through and worked up to bigger sizes and another bit snapped just as the hole neared completion. Before I knew it, it was 6 hours later and time for a late dinner.

Bearings are shot. Original is New Departure 1204 which is same as 6204. I happen to have a set of Nachi with rubber seals (6204 2NSE) which I ordered for another project but I'll use them in this as the other project is a while from completion.

Original paint is light blue for base and center band and black for end caps and guards.

Large 10 MFD starting capacitor is made by Aerovox. Amazingly still in business. I clipped soldered wires to remove and will resolder once reassembled.

If anyone has side guard cover or original bolts please let me know.

Any thoughts on paint? I'm inclined to leave it as-is and just replace cord and beatings and clean it up. But since it is fully apart it may make sense to blast and paint. Otherwise I'll wire brush loose rust off and call it done.

Looking at parts on either side I suspect someone was in here and assembled wrong. Here is what was on each side

709606eb64310ebe6a73fc92ee617eb9.jpg

Main difference is left side has spring washer then large washer and right side had two smaller washers and then large washer but no spring. Should I get another spring (source?) and move on smaller washer to other side to match sides?

Here is what vintage hardware looks like. Never saw a slotted acorn nut before.

e78d139ebc5f4100296af46889e77a62.jpg

Then today I picked up a Stanley 1/3 HP model 667 on Craftsman stand. This one included lighted shields too. Cord is dry rotted and needs to be replaced. Bearings are good and it is in nice shape. Seller was asking $110 but it was listed for 3w and he accepted my $80 offer. And hour later I loaded it up.

32ddd31e8409b1affcd357ec40f07d8b.jpg

I plan to sell the stand and should break even or better in the grinder. Plus I'll replace the cord and try to get missing slide from sharpener attachment or remove it.

The closest match I've found for the 30's/40's Craftsman Blue is Valspar #85205 Classic Royal Blue. Available in the spray can isle at Lowes.

Those are both pretty awesome grinders, pics of the end cap that you need and I'll take a look in my stash. I have a few end caps I picked up from sales with no grinder in sight...

Decided to use electrolysis on the base. It is bubbling away now and I'll check on it tonight to see progress.

I won this Black & Decker 8" pedestal grinder at an auction. Nothing's missing from it except the glass for the shields. Turned out to have a 3 phase motor. I was able to get it running on my 220 volt / single phase shop power by connecting a run capacitor across one of the windings. I can't fine any information about it, except that it was made in the USA. So I'd guess that it was made in the 70s. One other thing, it's so smooth that it takes 5 minutes & 23 seconds for the wheels to come to a complete stop.

Picked this up yesterday. Very happy with it, runs good. Local shop is being liquidated, I was glad to see it was still available when I got there, guy running the sale wouldn't hold it for me.

Perhaps this should go in the Found a deal on Craig's List thread.

The seller held it for me, and I picked it up this morning. A bonus, there was a 132# Yellow rescued-Lab that loved to play fetch.

If this isn't exactly old enough to be vintage, I plan to use the base for an old Milwaukee 1-HP grinder.

Well this freaked me out!

Here I am quietly reading the forums and Scimonetti's post jumps out at me:

What do you think of the eye shields on this 3/4hp Sioux? They seem highly unlikely to be original but I haven't found any pics of this model. And what do you guys think of ones this large without frames?
_20%201_zpszpsggrgk.jpg
As for the grinder itself, hopefully I can report good news in the next couple days.

Hey!! That's my grinder!! How did you get a picture of my grinder? :headscrat

LOL

Here it is in the back of my Journey:

Sioux-8-Front-Left.jpg

Sioux-8-Back.jpg

Sioux-8-Badge-3.jpg

Picked it up February 2, 2015. Nice fella, it was his dad's. It is a great machine, but needs work mind you, bearings for sure, rewiring, etc.. 3/4 HP, 8" stones. A truly wonderful example of quality work. Nothing stops this grinder.

As noted earlier, there is one example at owwm that bears a striking resemblance. I think the example at owwm is my grinder's big brother. (From a family line of grinders perspective.)

For your review, Here are a couple of grinders that I saw at an auction preview yesterday:

First grinder is a B&D 1hp. 3ph. 220/440v

Second grinder is a Setco 2hp. 3ph. 460v. This thing is so bad-a$$ that I kept quiet around it. I was afraid to wake it up.:scared:

just picked up this WEN grinder and restored it. This is an ALL ALUMINUM grinder. Everything is aluminum, everything. 6" cutting wheel on one side, 6" grinding wheel on the other. Put bearings in it (timkens). Noisy though because it is aluminum.

I cannot find anything about this model online. Any help? Anyway I think it is cool.

nice job Joe! That think is pretty cool with the cut off wheel and tool rest on the left hand side.
