I've been using it to neutralize rust pits on farm implements and I am going to use it on some pitted body panels on one of my Dodge trucks as part of the painting prep. Its good stuff.

my only issue with it is this black graphite type slime that i cant get off. specifically on sockets that are rusted inside. it will clean every speck of rust off, but i cant get all the black goo out. carb cleaner, high pressure water, air, etc.... any tips?

Use a plumber's wire pipe brush to clean out the sockets, and then oil the insides.

i oil them afterwards. usually will take the corner of a rag and stuff it in there and turn the socket several times. oiling usually makes the black goo spread even worse. i have a mac ratchet that was rusted. ive sprayed it with brake cleaner multiple times. still get black on my hands and the ratchet is completely dry.

Simple--just rinse them under hot water immediately upon removal from the solution. Rub with your fingers or a soft brush. Don't let it dry on.

Has anyone tried Evaporust as the cleaning fluid in an ultrasonic cleaner? I'm betting the results would be amazing.

Evapo-Rust is awesome. I spoke to one their technical types a couple of years ago and he said it works best at about 90 degrees. I also wondered if keeping the solution moving would speed it up so I ran a tube from an aquarium aerator into the bottom of the tub and it did speed things up.

Soak for 10 minutes in Zep floor stripper and then brush with tooth brush or acid brush.

Evapo-Rust is great. Deeper the rust the more time it takes to soak in. Have used it on large areas of body panels by brushing it on then laying down a sheet of plastic to keep it from drying out.

I like the plastic idea for body panels, especially if you don't want to use a DA sander/grinder. More time but less effort, I'm guessing?

Their are videos out there how to make a shower so to speak with a pump to make evaporust flow constantly on large items.

Maybe it's just me but those results don't look all that impressive?

Evapo-Rust doesn't seem to work any better but cost twice as much? What am I missing?

Twice as much? I can get a gallon of vinegar for like $2.49. Anyways, vinegar is an acid that eats the rust away. Sure you can toss a damn hammer in it and not worry, but what about something different? Chrome tools, or delicate items like rules?

These are the questions I ask myself. I'm a vinegar user myself. Ollie's ain't got no Evaporust around here.

Where can I get a can of that stuff.

The hot ticket for Evaporust is Ollie's Outlet. About $10 per gallon.

Harbor Freight has it for $25 per gallon, minus your 20% or 25% coupon. (Beekeeper says $32 at HF)

Amazon has it for $24/gal or $87/5 gallon bucket.

You may have a valid point but I can't help but think that if an item is already rusted to the point of needing a chemical stripper, then the surface is already flawed and if the item was chromed, that means the chrome is already compromised. That being the case, its pretty doubtful that Vinegar would make it any worse.
