Saw a rather cute little vise at a clients yard at work yesterday. Back today, so I'll grab a picture at lunch. Sadly it's very rusty and pretty far gone. A little 3" machinists vise, English style. It says made in canada on one side, and has a triangular marking I didn't recognize on the other. Still thought it was kinda cool

Picked up the HEUER DRP vise. It's cool how the dynamic jaw is behind the static jaw and it moves back when you open it.

59: even though that is one of the newer Massey vises it's still probably close to 100 years old. they are a quality old vise and worth probably a lot more than they would sell for. how much is the guy asking for it and how wide are the jaws?

Just pîcked up my second vise. a RAE Hamilton Canada No 4. 4" jaws. Dirty as heck but seems in pretty good sape, couldn't let it pass on Kijiji for 20$. From the looks of it (under the grease and grime) it was partially spray bombed black, base still shows what I believe is the original blue colour. It's a lighter blue than my Record No 4 and I like it, will probably try to match it.

It's no heavyweight but I'll likely use it to beat on more than my Record, I'm just too sentimentally attached to that one, it being my Grandfathers.

So... started tearing this thing apart to clean it. Plan was too remove the jaws, take it apart, clean it and soak it in vinegar to remove the rust, then repaint it and use and abuse it.

Took the jaw off the dynamic jaw easily, it was missing a screw and the other was very loose. Static jaw is another story, both are seeming rusted on tightly. Tried using a hand impact and that only amounted to breaking one of the screws.

Should I just soak the whole thing in vinegar now, might help loosen up the screws?

First I've seen maybe 6-7 of these. They are always in great shape. I passed on one last week at the Elephant Trunk show in Milford CT that was in similar condition that was $65. I have one in my shop in 'as new' condition that I paid $50 for and it has the swivel base (I'm planning to paint it like a Bugatti vise). If you like it buy it. But for an every day shop vise that is little like that I like a swiveler. My 6" Athol is fixed but it is 195 lbs so it is my heavy duty vise.

I have some good rules you must remember if you come to this board:

1.) Vise prices are regional. What I pay for most of my vises most would consider stealing. There are a LOT more vises up here. Bagged89S10 will back me up when I say I could buy a 4" Reed, Athol, Parker, Prentiss every day of the week and all for under $75.00 up here. Like wise they are impossible to sell up here, hence eBay.
2.) Asking guys on here if you should buy a vise is like asking the drunk sitting on the stool next you if you should have another drink. Seriously, they are ALL incorrigible. They will always tell you to buy it!

OK time for my soapbox, I wish everyone would put where they are from under their avatars. Even just regionally. It makes a BIG difference if that York is in Texas or Massachusetts as to whether it is a great value or not. I always look before I respond to someone to see where they are located. And if by chance they are near me, well I will try to steal their vise !!!

I agree with Joe on the prices up here in New England being pretty low. Today I just missed an athol 624-1/2 which I called on but was already sold. It was listed for only $45.

I just bought a small vice , it's quite old and I really like the curves on it. I have no idea of make or age , so if someone can help , that will be great.

The jaws are 85mm across and it has the number 4 on the side.

Of course I closed the door. Actually, I was just in a hurry to take the pictures so I didn't reassemble them. Are you familiar with or interested in post vises? I bought them from two different sellers for $20 each. I'm going to mount one to the end of my bench and the other might become Craig's List fodder.

I used to use one in the workshop at my nans farm many years ago and have vowed one day to get my own. They always seem to be the other end of the country from me and in the UK they'll fetch far more than $20. One day I will own one, I can be quite determined like that!

I went to buy a grinder but it was too rough for me to buy. But I asked and I got 2 vises

palmgren AV-24-1 tilt vise with swivel base. 4" jaws


Has some drill holes but not the end of the world.

And a Wilton woodworkers vise

There seems to be a lot of no-name vises of that style. I suspect they are mainly for jewelers or similar artisans. Here's one I picked up last year, which nobody had any ideas of its origin.

First Versa Vise that I've seen in the wild. Since learning about them here of course. Had to check it out at $40. Came with a massive old workbench that I'll likely set ablaze.

Seems overall good condition, minus the white paint overspray. Missing the accessories unfortunately.

If you have the accessory mount and no vise, I'm interested in it.

The leg vices are quite common across here too. People just want silly money for them generally, else they're too far away to be feasible for collection. Vices are generally somewhat undervalued over here compared to what you chaps over there pay for them, (we have more vices in general over here than you can shake a stick at, I suppose), so vice values generally aren't too high. Leg vices seem to be made of gold dust judging from some peoples pricing though.

Like CW, I've been after one for yonks, and have only very recently dropped on one.
