After 3 rounds of dancing around, I finally KO'd my RAE vise and got the damn screws out of the static jaw face.

Picture is misleading, because the impact, hammer and liberal amounts of PB Blaster had absolutely no effect on them, you'd swear they were welded on.

I think I may need to buy new screws though...

Took the drill press to get through to these guys, sometimes you have to get the big guns out to show your tools who the real boss is.

CW: i'd almost bet you like that Parkinson vise stand as much or more than any vise you own. cool find and post more pictures once you set it up and have some of your vises sitting on it PLEASE.

Sandman: so what's your address and how can i stop by to check out some of that old iron you have just sitting around? seriously nice anvils and i can't say I've seen any double ended ones in person and I've seen and owned quite a few.

in the picture of i'm guessing a Prentiss 58 that looks pristine BTW there is a Holland's 18 in the background. is the Holland's missing it's main screw or was it just not in the vise for that picture. nice pair and if you have time for a family or group shots of your big vise and anvil crew to post please do.

TOP: so how is the 78 members of your family liking the idea of the group picture? i'm not sure i can get all mine in one place either, but i'll try and see if i have a count. some have been leaving home lately and finding other member's benches where they were promised more attention sort of like some of yours did.

It is the other way around for me, the vise wins 8 out of 10 rounds. I have to take out a broken off screw on the Morgan I started on. Just when you think you have seen all, this one had one screw hole packed with JB weld all the way out to the jaw face. I drilled it out and the threads were fine after I cleaned them out with a tap.

DIF: It's reassembled but going to need a good clean, not sure what the raised bolts are for on some of the shelves? Perhaps to hold a vise upside down to show off it's workings?

EDIT: looks like the plate on the top is for a Ball Base Vise :)

And for his next trick, CW needs to find all the vises that go on that stand!

VERY cool find!

Someone needs to repost the Vise tree pics! It has potential competition!

I'm thinking that a vise was mounted to the shelf and maybe a bar was bolted between the posts that ran between the jaws to keep the vises from wandering around the shop at night (or getting stolen). The posts from the other shelves would then be categorized as missing. :dunno:

I have to thank Fretters for spotting the stand for me :) It has to have been the worlds worst ebay advert :)

The description just said Parkinson display stand, about 6ft tall and heavy. This was the only picture.

Parkinson stand ebay.jpg

I reckon it would be legitimate to put Parkinson and Samsonia vises on the stand.

It looks to hold about 13 vises. I've a 37,38,6,7, two ball vises, an old 2 part No 7, possibly an old 2 part No 8 (depending on golem like tendencies of a friend ;) ). So I'm 5 or 6 short at the minute .... and I have to work out what the long bolts are for .....

The stand is just about moveable empty..... there will be no chance when full loaded.

Anyone any idea what era a cast iron display stand would be?

Interesting idea, although those bars would only be bolted on the same as the vises being bolted to the stand. Perhaps you are on the right lines though, it could be for the popular vises that sell quickly so they didn't have to keep bolting them to the stand and the bars were to stop them falling on peoples toes? Who knows ..... never seen a picture of one in any literature.

EDIT:Just had another thought! They may be to allow you to mount a wood working vise, as they would need clearance under the vise. I have two of those :D

CW: thanks for the picture and looking forward to you setting it up with your Parkinson vices on it. you probably haven't noticed the stand in any of the catalogs because you didn't know you were going to own one.

i can't say I've seen any other vise company stands and wonder if anybody else has. anybody know of or own one?

Fretters: nice assist.

That's what I had to do with my American scale. And of course they have the 60degree countersink screws that I think only the viseparts website carries. They guy is really nice. Just call to order.

For those that don't make it over to the block grinder thread, I picked up a Morgan 150 the other day, very clean. No slide hammering at all, tight and clean jaws. Weighs in at 90 lbs. One of the cleanest around. I'm thinking it will be restored in arrest me red and be opposite on the bench of my Morgan Milwaukee 150 (in OSHA blue).

Drives I miscounted I forgot 2 post vise and 5 lil clamp-ons and 2 drill press vise but 4 will be leaving shortly. I'll be thinking on a creative way to get a photo of all 87 or what ever the number may be by then.

None of the other plates have holes for the raised bolts, and of the two that do, the holes are in different locations. Sounds vise(excuse me, vice) specific to me.

Cheers for the suckage guys :D

I didn't realise they went for quite so much money, I'd guessed they were rare due to the fact I'd not been able to find any others when googling.

Even more surprising then that the eBay auction I won was it's 4th time of listing and I was the only bidder....

That Record one from the 1930's is gorgeous, although it's only 27" high and those are Records 4 smallest vices on it.

I've been doing some more googling and I've found a few old catalogue pages with American vise manufacturers advertising their display stands, some quite nice wheel design ones. There's also a few patents for vise display stands.

However the two you mention are the only ones there are actual pictures of in the flesh that I can find. Thanks for pointing them out :)

Aye, and you'd have had it on the third if I hadn't dropped a bollock and had given you a shout earlier. :D Glad to see it all worked out well in the end CW, and that is one ****** **** stand. :) Even our Gert likes it. :D

On a tangent, noting your mention of Gollum, :D I asked yesterday as to whom had nicknamed the Ball Base "Precious" and why. I think they're just saying it to wind me up when they say I was stroking it as I carried it to the truck. :D

Prentiss 98 pictures and check out the video of how fast this big boy moves with new jaws

There were no jaws on it when I got it and the rest pretty much a mess. Kevin's help with some custom made jaws and a little local machine work they fit pretty well. I repurposed a pry bar to make a new handle and trimmed up an old offset wrench for the base lock.

Just ordered a new set of jaws from Kevin myself, for the Starrett-Athol 324-1/2 I posted a picture of earlier. I'm also thinking of getting the pipe jaws polished. I wire wheeled them but they're still kind of tired in appearance (though the teeth are still like-new!). The original straight jaws are torn up enough that they deserve retirement.

I recently made lead jaw covers for all my vises, and I have to say I'm a huge fan! Hold really tight, won't damage anything, and very difficult to damage the jaw covers themselves! I used 1/8" thick sheet lead, and it seems about perfect. I just cut it out with tin snips, and tapped them to shape with a wooden mallet.
I'd definitely recommend keeping an eye out for some sheet lead! I have used copper jaw covers quite a bit, and I much prefer the lead!

Nice work Get, been waiting for your finished pic's. I posted a picture and link to a Prentiss #58 and it just sold to a GJ member who now has three of them.

Hello,

A few weeks ago I posted in this thread looking for info on a charles parker no. H. I picked it up today for $60 CAD.

It seems to be in pretty good shape although I think the handle is not original because it looks a little crude and appears to be significantly smaller than the hole it goes into. The hole seems to be fairly oval shaped so it might just be wear.

Some quick help here please!!

I was picking a junkyard today and saw a modern Craftsman vise molded pipe jaws, grey with a rounded slide (not completely round) swivel base bolted to a bumper. Thing is it had 8" jaws. Now I cannot find a thing about this one on line. Trying to figure if it is worth the 1 hour round trip to go back and get it. Normally I'd pass but I can't find this one online anywhere which has me scratching my head!!!

Picked up these vises today. 1920s machinist vise, 4 clamp on vises and a small bench top vise. Then I picked up the Wilton 7450. Everything here for $125.

Joe, is that a Dake in the box?

Um....yes it is. An itty bitty one. I didn't bring it up here 'cause some of the guys here are old and crotchety and dont want me going off the reservation. Just like I didn't bring up the 4 ton dunlap truck jack I got as well.

I'm old and crotchety too, but a Dake is a Dake. Ask my brother about the one I found for him. You're right not to bring up jacks though.
