i like the craftsmen pro better than any personally...that said, my buddy has one of the 4 foot long behemoth pry bars that snappy makes, damn thing will give ya enough leverage to lift a 1200 pound engine up to slide it into mounts...

Mayhew or snap on. But Mayhew is best IMHO strickly based on price. SO might make a better pry bar but it is not worth double the price.

I have a 18" snap on hard handle pry bar and a 12" craftsman (wilde). I just got the craftsman one a few weeks ago and have not used it much but I like it so far, handle is pretty comfortable. I have had the snap on for a year or so and what I really like about it (besides the price I got it for) is that it has a striking portion so it can be used with a hammer. I had to rip out a bunch of boards in the rafters of my garage and I could not have gotten it done without the ability to strike it, made it a breeze. I think it is a must to have the steel **** plate so you can use it with a hammer. I saw some mayhew dominators at my hd and they looked pretty nice, you should be able to get them on amazon since you are in the uk. The pricing seems pretty reasonable and they have the **** plates.

I second mayhews. Though I have never used them. I've heard excellent things about them. I believe matco has a re badged version of them. They're pretty cheap on Amazon

The Facom D.3J3 pry bar set 3pc can be bought for £75 from a few sellers on ebay.

There are still a few sets of the Britool branded versions of these sets available
on ebay also for only £50 inc delivery.

I have the Britool set and I have been very happy with it. Very strong and they
have handled everything I have thrown at them. I don't have the Snap-on to
compare it to though.

I have had good luck with my CMAN/Wilde prybars, I've even beat on them with a sledge, but I have not used SnapOn bars.

My number 1 user bar is a 36 inch Klein Ironworkin sleever bar. OYC makes one similar but the guy got the end just right, its super unique. Its about in the same class as a vise grip.

These are by far the best bang for the buck IMO. Got them at Ollie's and have been using them for a while now. So far, I'm really happy, and they are dirt cheap there.

^^ THIS ^^

My Richards prybars (sourced cheap at Ollie's) have been great.

The Cman Pro bars are good. Been using them professionally going on 7 or so years. I also own the 8'' and the 48'' snappy bars. That pritty much covers any situation I've ever run into.

Snap On is REALLY expensive in the UK. But so is everything else. There are no great deals on Knipex or Hazet. Some German stuff is cheaper in the US then it is in the UK.

For a UK tech, Snap On is probably the best choice cash permitting. Buy on ebay or only on special on the truck when special deals easily achieve US retail prices. Large sets (wrenches) might be worth buying on US Ebay even with the exorbitant shipping.

The other option is low end imported stuff like Teng. My advice is to spend money for tools that need to be either top notch, or need to be frequently warrantied. Pry bars may fit the latter category.

I think the OP is a young lube tech type mechanic. He's borrowing tools at the moment. And his pay won't take him as far on the Snap On truck as his US counterpart. And I don't believe Snap On UK has an SEP.

My advice is, if you can take advantage of your colleagues good will and continue to borrow, you will do well to save money and buy used Snap On tools on ebay. Just try to pay no more than 50% of UK retail since you may be able to get that price on the truck.

Cheap can sometimes be the best bang for the buck, but depending where you purchase of course. Avoid Harbor Freight's Pry Bar "Sets" as much as you can as they tend to give way after a certain threshold. I couldn't resist picking up a 15" flat pry bar for $3 the other day. The alignment pry bar and T-Type Wrecking Bar are decent and cheap in terms of price.

You can get Craftsman Professional sets in the UK from Hudson Tools:

3-piece set for £42.99 or 5-piece set for £62.99.

It's been said on here that these are Mayhew prybars but with a USA sourced handle instead.

Member CanUK has posted a set - I believe in the "tools of the old world" thread - of either Britool or Facom and said these were made in the USA and looked exactly like the Wilde/Craftsman non-pro offerings.
