Used Schedule 20 (thin wall) 4-inch PVC pipe for our dust collector a few years ago and need to add on to the runs. Went looking for more pipe and fittings today and came up empty handed on the pipe. Is the white PVC schedule 20 still available or is just the stocking strategy of HD and L's big box stores to carry the fittings and not the pipe? One of the six stores did have a limited quantity of some 4" PVC pipe in green that would work, but really want to stick with white to match.

Will check a plumbing supply store during the week.

If you want to come get it I have about 20 sticks I bought at auction 20+ years ago. I really have no use for them but they were on a pallet with some other stuff I wanted, I used 10 or so for down spouts on the old shop.

Dallas to Duluth is a pretty long drive.
Even for free pipe.

Color may be your problem.
It may be a code related thing since Schd 40 is white and someone may try to pass off cheaper 20 for 40

Be careful running PVC as duct, it can build a large static charge :shocking:
It can't be grounded even with wire wrapped around it. I had a guy on a crew reach over to pick up a piece of PVC that was used as duct work and had been laying on the ground for a few days. He got within a foot of it and it arced to his hand knocking him off his feet.

The thin pipe is in a different area of the store at my Lowes, anyway. I used it for all my ducting as well. If worried about static, spray with Armor all or fabric static free spray.

Or just wait a few weeks and the dust that sticks to the pipe will drain off the static.

This. Static is a major issue with PVC pipe. I used to sell it and when handling bulk quantities, the pipes would rub together and if you touched the pipes while you were near or touching the steel racks they were on, you got lit up hard by the discharge.
I've heard of people running a bare copper wire down the inside of PVC dust collection pipes to help dissipate the charge. Wire must be on the inside of the pipe, not the outside.
A large spark in an environment of airborne dust could result in a large explosion or fire.

Yes, if the concentration of dust in the pipe was within the flammable limits. But keep in mind, the dust will coat the inside and outside of the pipe after some use, and any newly generated charge will drain away.

Thanks all, did find what I needed at a local independent hardware store. The score: HD 0/4, L's 0/2, local plumbing & electric supply 0/1, Indy hardware 1/1

Thumper68, thanks for the offer, and your price is excellent! You are just a hair past my acceptable drive distance.

Yes, well aware of the static build up and all the warnings about possible explosions, fires, death and destruction do to the static discharge. However, will continue to live on the edge.

I go one step more wild than that. I leave the pit in the olive when my wife makes me a Martini.
