All,
I rode to an auction preview today. Beautiful day for a motorcycle ride! I'd thought that I would share a few interesting pictures of poor mistreated vises.

-->WARNING!<-- These pictures may be upsetting to GJers. Viewer discretion advised!

Well Mark I had to look.---MY EYES--MY EYES.:scared::eyecrazy::shocking:

Had to go back up to Thumpers 61S to get shocked back into coherency.

BTW,---you got to respect Simplex for making the jaw support so thick.---If more Cos. had of done that there would have been less chunks missing on many of them.---Always liked the Simplex.---Demo's got an 81S, and I've got vise envy.---The 81 is on my very short list.

Then I have an old Record 4 1/2" vice , jaws open to 8". This is just used outside for grinding and welding on. It's pretty rough but works very well.

WOW this thread moves SO fast :)

So after stuffing around with the vice on a box , I finally made a stand .
I just used some old mercedes driveshafts and a Landcruiser rim. I added an old Mercedes diesel flywheel to the underside of the rim to give some more mass for stability. It's pretty rough , but it lives outside.

I found a tiny vice I made in metal work class at high school , in 1968.

It is terrible , LOL . The slides bind and it doesn't open very far but it has some small sentimental interest due to it's provenance . :D

I clearly remember the process we went thru in the shop to create the vice.

2 1/2" jaws .

( I never use it )

BTW that is a Record 34, they are a high end vice made from either cast steel or sg iron depending on age and almost unbreakable.

Thanks CW , I was aware that Record has a good name , it's really nice to have it confirmed that it has survived the last 40+ yrs of abuse , due to quality , not good luck :)

I did shim the retaining nut so there is no backlash, the moving jaw flows beautifully .

Dusty: Mercedes? Landcruiser? For a vise stand? What's the matter, weren't there any Rolls Royce or Bentley parts available? Just kidding. It's nice looking and well-made. Congrats on a job well done. You're correct that this thread moves quickly. We just get to appreciating at a good vice...Hey, look at that one over there!! Where was I ? Oh yeah, I wish I had had a shop class like yours. That vise of yours is one to treasure.

Pete: I wish I could tell you something about that Cheney vise. I live near Detroit and the name is familiar. I do genealogical research which sometimes involves going to the main Detroit Library. The next time I go I'll check on that. That's generally a cold weather activity for me so it could be awhile.

EDIT: I just remembered that my great-grandfather was a foundry worker in Detroit at about the same time as the date of that patent. Maybe that's where I heard the name.

Mr P: Yes, my Dunlap 5244 looks very similar to your Littco which is why I bring it up when you post about yours. The thing is, every other 5244 I've seen looks different. They are more rounded and chunky and they have covered screws.

Mark: Thanks for the warning but I had to look too. Oh, the humanity!

TO ALL: Heed the warning! Don't look!!!

Pete: I just did some quick checking and I found these ads for Cheney Anvil & Vise.

TO EVERYONE: Prentiss and Perfect vises are on the same page as the Cheney.

Good Morning. I have an offer for the group. I am going to pick up some of these stands on Friday for myself. There are a few remaining. They are costing me $395 and she is firm on the price. If anyone here wants one you need to email me, not PM me, email, and give me your phone number where I can reach you. I will pick one up for you, put it on a pallet and strap it down for $450.00. You will need to arrange shipping. I will take it to Fastenal or any other local carrier and drop it off. You will pay for shipping. Assume they weigh 175 lbs. I'll get an exact weight on Friday.

Please let me know as we have to arrange to get me $$$ as I cannot front that much money. I'm dropping 2K there myself. It is first come first served. I think I can get 4 in addition to my supply.

Oh, and sorry boys, continental US only, otherwise shipping is a nightmare.

Thank you.

Here are some pictures of vertical mill vises (mounts sideways), at yesterday's auction preview, that I thought were interesting:

Last vise picture from yesterday's auction preview, a Universal vise that pivots on X & Y axises plus swivels. I want that one for my milling machine!

I got inspired today thanks to Mr P. I've had this Dunlap 5244 for a few weeks. P showed off his LITTCO so I decided to have a go at my 'lap. (No off color puns please). It has a crackle/crazed finish that I wanted to preserve. It was a perfect opportunity to try Fretters' shoe polish finish (see page 1753 post #35053). I called this a spiff-up and not a resto because all I did was take it apart, clean it, lube it, and reassemble. I did have to do a little file work on a bunged up thread on the main screw and of course I had to polish it. What do you think?

Looks great CRS

Saw this during lunch for $25, but didn't buy it because I'm not sure I'm ready to start piling up pipe vises. It's an Erie Tool Works 2-H..

I appreciate the offer. He is a guy in a sensitive position in CA so he doesn't participate on boards etc...I got him addicted a couple years ago and now he is full fledged in the deep end. He sees a lot of factories etc... so he sees everything, like these vises he's getting. For three 8" Parkers and 3 Wilton C2s he was told to pay $20! He can't do that so he's donating $500 to the guys favorite charity...he is deep in the closet so he's on his own.

I'm trying like hell to get him to send me an 8" Parker.:eyecrazy:

I've been stumbling over my stash of vises while in queue for a tune up....So today I built a sturdy set of shelves to get them off the floor and better organized.....It is 36" wide x 21" deep x 32" high......I used 2 x 4 & 2 x 8 lumber, wood screws and Gorilla Glue®.......

Hemi, you can get more vises in there if you alternate sides as you put them in (so the skinny part goes between the skinny parts...)

Nice looking HD shelf!

Nice shelf. Beats mine made of a bandsaw stand. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1442361228.256144.jpg
No room so I have a pile of freshly de-rusted and BLO'ed vises/vise parts. Lol

Missed out on a Record No 0 and a RAE 6" woodworking vise by 10 minutes on Kijiji today at 15$ each :(

Actually am looking for a 3" or so bench vise, the 2.5" No 0 would have fit the bill, and both were in great unrestored condition. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Hemi: i knew you had some nice vises, but didn't know you had such a big family. nice stand and thanks for sharing. care to post a list of the ones you have currently?

cheers

Bagged: i think JRobb is leasing a storage unit for his vises and grinders and i think you might be needing one too. get some commercial racking and fill it up or a little 500 pound Lyon cabinet like i found a few years ago that works great.
