Drive,---as far as what has been revealed so far, there has never been a 10'' Charles parker.---That's not to say that they didn't make a special order for some one.---This I've got to see.---If there was one, it would probably be a big chipper, and would be pushing 350 to 400 lbs., and Demo would have it on his monster vise table.

Hemi: i knew you had some nice vises, but didn't know you had such a big family. nice stand and thanks for sharing. care to post a list of the ones you have currently?

cheers

Bagged: i think JRobb is leasing a storage unit for his vises and grinders and i think you might be needing one too. get some commercial racking and fill it up or a little 500 pound Lyon cabinet like i found a few years ago that works great.

I have to clean up. Got a few vises/grinders going out this week so that should help me have some time to cleanup. My place is a disaster.

Drive....I'll get a roster comprised and post it.....I finally got all the quirks on the Prentiss 19 double swivler taken care of....I just have to paint it and reassemble.....Then I have a little Craftsman 5160 apart that needs finished and put together....After those two I think I'll spend some time on the Charles Parkers....

BAGGED.....DRIVE the storage thingy has been on my mind for awhile.....3-1/2 years ago I had obscene amounts of work area, buildings, equipment.....Then my health went south and now everything I do is in a tiny one car garage.....I'm not complaining, but now I have to really think about optimizing space, where before I had space to burn.....

I got inspired today thanks to Mr P. I've had this Dunlap 5244 for a few weeks. P showed off his LITTCO so I decided to have a go at my 'lap. (No off color puns please). It has a crackle/crazed finish that I wanted to preserve. It was a perfect opportunity to try Fretters' shoe polish finish (see page 1753 post #35053). I called this a spiff-up and not a resto because all I did was take it apart, clean it, lube it, and reassemble. I did have to do a little file work on a bunged up thread on the main screw and of course I had to polish it. What do you think?

Looking good Chris. That's a pretty neat trick with shoe polish. I never thought of that and it makes sense to preserve the underlying wrinkle finish paint.

So they broke it, brazed, it broke it again, lost the piece, then buried it in mud to rust for a few decades before dusting it off for sale... :wtf:

Mr P: It was a very satisfactory one day spiff-up. BTW the last time I did one in a day was on a RAE pipe vise. I now have two and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with them. Between the two, I only have $7 invested so perhaps they'll be paper weights.

Fretters: As soon as I saw your polished vise I knew I'd have to give it a try. The tackiness went away after a short drying time and a light buffing. How is yours holding up to the damp? BTW Nice turn of the phrase in your response to bagged.

rmalkow2: The texture is slightly rougher than a Kennedy box. BTW I was lightly joking when a said that all of you could call me CRS. Please feel free to do so, but my name is not Chris. Sorry for any confusion.

timbit: Too bad about missing those vises. I was just wondering today about how that RAE resto was progressing.

OOPs. After I hit submit I wondered if I had actually seen that as your name or just imagined it. Sorry about that. I guessed wrong.

But the vise still looks good!!!

My Reed 404 and Heuer 5 inch vises cleaned up and a coated with BLO.

My first European vise purchase.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1442379075.498893.jpg
The Reed is much better with the handles and swivel lock off the parts vise I picked up. The parts Reed also had a like new main nut so it was worth buying it. Only bad part on this vise is the slide is pitted where it sat out in the weather. The swivel jaw even slides as smooth as silk. All I did was wire wheel the moving parts.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1442379124.657883.jpg
This Reed has a drag link slotted screw to hold the swivel one.
My parts Reed is from 1909-1912 and has an 1-11/16" or 43mm bolt.
Hopefully letting it soak in penetrant overnight with help get it loosened up. Or I'll have to go buy a socket.

Rock Island 594 with no defects visible in the pic: $75 an OK price?
Really would prefer a swivel base, but I'm not finding much out here.

T

I guess it depends what defects they are. I paid 80 or 90 for mine in excellent shape.

timbit: Too bad about missing those vises. I was just wondering today about how that RAE resto was progressing.

Unfortunately it's going about the same as last time. Now that fall has started, our varsity sports at work have started and it severely limits my garage time.

Also due in part to my indecision on colour. However, the RAE I just missed had a light blue colour to it, and it seemed identical to the light blue parts that were on mine. The owner was saying it appeared to him that it was the original colour so that made up my mind on which colour to paint mine. Will just have to find time now.

That RAE pipe vise I have was painted light blue too.

Hemi: thanks for taking the time to do that and my count is 26 total. yes?

the no name vise looks like it might have a C on the dynamic that you might uncover. sorta looks like an old Parker so if you can spiff up the edge of the jaws maybe one of Parker guys can help or if it was made by Parker or another company that the C might lead to more information. it's old that is for certain.

cheers and just an FYI you're going to need a bigger shelf or more of them soon.

hope you are recovering from your health issues and from your posts you've made on GJ your sense of humor and wisdom seems to be in good shape.

Joe, Good luck on the treasure hunt today. I hope you found some help to go with you.
Get, not going til Friday as the seller had a previous commitment and I had my own fun today.

At this point it is only me going. If there is anyone in the Worcester area that would like to give a GJer a hand I'd appreciate it. I plan to be there around 1:30.

I've never brought more cash with me to a pic than I am to this one, and it is still not nearly enough. Also my offer still stands, if anyone here wants one of these I will strap it to a pallet and you have to pay for shipping. Let me know soon please.

And Get, thanks for the wishes, I'll need them...:eyecrazy::bounce:

Spent the Day today at Kaman Aerospace. My family had a pricvate tour and got upclose and personal with the Kamax helicopter.

My dad worked at Kaman up til his death in 1968. We donated some papers to Kaman that they will use since the are rolling out production of the Kamax again. My dad wrote a paper on flying the Kamax that they still use today (because of the intermeshing rotor blades it was a different bird to fly...)

Anyway, during the tour I had to laugh, here it is 2015 and I saw vises as old as 1890 still in use, and a ton of Greenerd arbor presses. I was not allowed to photograph there though. But I did get shots of Kaman making rotor blades OUT OF WOOD!!!

If that broken Ebay Parker 954 was realistically priced I would buy it for the main screw and collar for my 974.

veeps between us we have to have a 4" parker parts vise right?

I only have a screw and collar off my Parker 22x but they are very rough. The screw needs some work. The collar is chewed up.not sure if they will fit and how much work you want to do to make them clean.

EX: I'm not positive on the specs on that little open screw vise, but 25 pounds seems a bit high, but not as high as the asking price. probably about half that is about right and $10-20 for a YS price.

Joe: as much as i like those stands $550 to have one shipped is more than i would spend on them. i'm not sure i'd pay $350, but they must be nicer in person if you think they are a good deal. good luck and hope you don't get mugged on the way to pick them up.

SPN: I'd guess pre 1950's and not older than 1930's. nice little clamp on and if you add the time and gas it might be worth it to wait for a bigger older US made one close to you unless you really like it.

Yea i'm looking for something big, but hard to find anything around here under $200. I really liked the Miller's Falls anvil vise I posted here from craigslist about a month ago, but too pricey for it's condition.
